Canon 18-200mm F3.5-5.6 IS

wow... I own a 50D with kit lens 18-200mm F3.5-5.6 IS for about month now but haven't take any pics as good as yours... any chance you go outing and takes some of us newbies with you... :D

You can join in shooting sessions organised by 450D club which will be posted in kopitiam. Not all who join are using 450D so don't worry about what camera you are using ;). It is for us to meetup, share information and have fun shooting :D.

Thanks.. surely will check the thread... :D

I took these pics at East coast using my 50D and 18-200mm F3.5-5.6 IS kit lens.

Seems like your aperture is pretty small at f8 or f10? You may want to try a bigger f stop at probably f6.3, then set manual focusing point and subject to one of the flowers ;). Overall, the composition and the colors are nice.

Actually I am using F5.6 (the largest aperture with the focal length of 187mm), wanting to create a bokeh "macro" effect with this lens... :)

PS: For most of my photos I have left the EXIF intact inside... ;)

*scratch head* isn't the best bokeh produced with the smallest aperature number (aperature wide-open)? the largest aperature for this lens is 3.5..

It's not f/3.5 throughout the zoom range. As you zoom the value stops down gradually, and at the long end, the maximum aperture size is f/5.6 with this lens.

yea.. that i know.. but i was talking about "best bokeh".. not about largest aperature at the long end.. :)

In order to get the closest close up, one must use the longest possible end and go as near as possible, right?

If I may bring you back to basics, DoF is affected by imaging medium, focus/subject distance, focal length and aperture setting, not just aperture setting alone. Shooting at 18mm f/3.5 will still give you a deeper DoF than shooting at 200mm f/5.6, subject distance and imaging medium being constant.

okie.. got it..

After a few test with this lens, so far... I prefer the bokeh with the zoom-in (F5.6) instead of zoom-out (F3.5)... :)

Have went down to the Singapore Science Centre to take some photos, unfortunately I missed the "balloon popping" shot the first time. :( End up I decided went back again the next day just to take this shot... :xmas:

On contrast of my earlier macro shot to create a "Bokeh" effect, I have choose to use a smaller aperture to get a deeper DoF to get "most items" in focus. ;)

Well capture. Btw, did you diffuse your flash? I can see some harsh flash lightings at the tables and the red machine (not sure what it's called :P).

The red machine is the "Tesla Coil Generator" which produce the spark on the "top right". I was pointing my 580EX2 at a 45° angle with a Stofen Omni Bounce diffuser (the roof is too high for me to bounce my flash).

I suspect the equipment are wrapped by a reflective material. hence the "harsh flash" reflection... Didn't want to do much PP/DI on this photo as this is more like a "technical shot" for the the Canon 18-200mm lens... :)

Trying out the new 500D with my lens for some portrait shots, both were taken in aperture priority mode (EXIF details can be found in the photos). My aim was to test the "Bokeh" effect on this camera & lens combination.

Doing a test shot with the lens wide open (F3.5) in the min focal length (18mm), the shot was taken near noon (11:51am) with an external flash to "brighten" the subjects. Beside "pumping" up the green channel for the "grass effect", not much PP was done. The EXIF details can be found in the photo.

Sylvia's Pose

The shot was taken in the afternoon (12:30pm) with an external flash to "brighten" the subject. The purpose is to do a test shot with a bright & high contrast background behind the subject, it was taken with the min focal length (18mm) with a F-stop of F11. No PP was done on the lighting for this shot. The EXIF details can be found in the photo.

Used the Canon 55-250mm F4-5.6 IS

Curious... this thread is meant for Canon 18-200mm. May I know why you post a photo using the Canon 55-250mm without any other description or comment? :dunno:

hi anson,

i looked through your entire thread of pictures - all of them sure look pretty good! i've also used the 18-200mm IS before ( loaned ) but found it particularly hard to get satisfying results without an external flash.

were u using ETTL on your 580EXII or manual settings?

here are 2 sample pics i took with the 1kD and 18-200mm lens sometime back @ somerset..

didn't appear tack sharp even @ f8, 1/320. (after resizing, this size looks sharp though) focus was on his side profile (face).

the 2nd pic is f5.6 @ 1/250, right skates didn't appear quite sharp even though he stopped for this shot. maybe this one can be considered as subject movement?

one disadvantage of this lens is that it becomes tiring to carry after like perhaps 2-3hours of shooting. maybe i'm used to light plastic (the 50mm) already.. haha.

Most of my shots are shot in Manual mode with Flash compensation, I seldom shoot at F8, mainly I shoot in F5.6.

For the weight, try getting a BG for the camera... it helps alot... :)
