Canon 18-200mm F3.5-5.6 IS

nice and sharp at web resolution..

Thanks.. Although this lens is not as "tact sharp" as a prime or lens, it does holds in own even at 100% crop as well. :)

TACK-sharp

from the saying "as sharp as a tack" (thumbtack etc)...

:)

Decided to make a trip to the Bedok Reservoir to get some casual shoots, but eventually decided to try some HDR shoots instead (but I forgot to bring a tripod... :()

All shots below were taken using Canon 18-200mm F3.5-5.6 IS with a Tamron 72mm CPL :

Any 100% crop of the above pictures to prove..?

Hmm.. this has been the 3rd time you requested for a 100% crop of my photos... :bsmilie:

Unfortunately your request is too late, as in my typical workflow for FOC shots) I don't keep my RAW or original JPG. because I don't have a reason of keeping them. Like I mention previously the IQ of this lens is not "tack-sharp" (thanks to charlesleong for correcting me.. :)) if you are comparing to a prime or L lenses. As a Canon dslr (xxxD or xxD series) you would also know that Canon have a rather "strong" AA filter which would affect picture's sharpness.

Having comparing the shots taken by typical 450D dual kits lens (Canon 18-55mm IS & 55-250mm IS) beside missing the additional 50mm focal length, this lens (18-200mm IS)'s IQ & AF speed are quite similar to those found in the dual kit lens. However you get a better built (compared to the 18-55mm IS), shorter min focus distance (compared to the 55-250mm IS) and a non-rotating front element (compared to the dual kit lens).

To have a hand-on feel of this lens, why not drop down to Canon's showroom at VivoCity and take some picture for comparison for yourself? Hope it helps... :)

You're right about the Low Pass filter for canon DSLR.. however, often, we saw comments like "tack sharp", "very sharp".. so I'm just wondering what is meant by "tack-sharp" and "very sharp".

With the low pass filter, can "L" lens still produce a "tack sharp" picture as well?

I've used 85 F1.2L, 17-55 F2.8 stopped down, and still the picture is nothing close to "tack sharp". well.. maybe PLBV or different expectations.. and there isn't opportunity to hold it for prolonged period to really test it out or mount it on tripod..

Actually how sharp is "tack sharp".... Even if we can find a full sized picture on the web, it might have already gone thru PP..

It'll be great if there's a site with comparison of the 100% crop of the different lens from the same camera with same setting (sharpness, saturation etc.. ) or with raw files for download..

Happen to drop by VivoCity that day and saw that there was a "Get Singapore" event promoting the various Singapore brands.

It was not my initial intention to take the Sunset, but seem that the timing seem right while I was waiting for the dam to "open"...

Hi Anson. Beautiful pixs. Just a question. How does sharpness at 18mm wide open on your 18-200 compare with 18-55 IS kit lens? Thank you.

Nice shots as usual from you :).

On the sidenote, for the last shot, I find the PP in red saturation abit over-exaggerated as you can see all the pple in red starts popping up distracting the attention for the whole scenery. Other than that, it's a great view even from my monitor!

Thanks, I seldom shoot at 18mm with my aperture wide-open. So can't really comment on it.

Thanks Bro, didn't notice it... Actually I did not use PS to do touch-up just use it to resize, add watermark & border... :)

My bad as the red really did catch my attention in the last shot which seems like red saturation done :bsmilie:.

Nonetheless, your shots have all been great. In fact, your thread is a great learning material for me as I really sux at shoot landscape and your landscapes are good.

More more !

Check this thread out, about tack sharp, just for laughs though. Don't take it seriously. :P

I have the Sigma 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 lens - photos abit soft at the 140-200mm range. Also I find the focusing a little slow for action shots, and image not so bright.

How does this compare to the Canon 18-200mm F3.5-5.6 IS?

Rgds

When an 18-200mm zoom lens is trying to focus at the near maximum focus, the images will not be very sharp when compared to lens with lesser zoom levels. It is IQ compensation for zoom levels and vice versa, which is why some would prefer Prime or L lens.

Next, by saying slow focusing, there are many factors which can contribute to slow focusing. Care to elaborate under what kind of circumstances does your lens focusing starts to react "slow" and how slow is your slow, please define?

ISO is set at 800 and 1600.

For example, my dog runs around and I follow with my camera. By the time I snap, the image comes out blur.

Sorry, do not know how to describe.

For predictable movements of the subjects, use AI Servo like what Anson did for his shots, where the focus will lock on the moving subject and use high shutter to capture the moment.
