Nice shot!

If without the pink round float at the back, it'll really be a better shot IMO.

NovJoe.

the wakeboarding shot probably did not show off the limitations of the lens - f/5.6 at the long end is not critical when you're dealing with lots of light.

probably what more people want to see is how the IS helps to 'counter' the small aperture in low-light situations.

Thanks Bro... I know the pink float at the back does make it abit distracting, but I tried not to do much DI on this thread as it is mainly used to show the shots taken by the Canon lens. :)

Every equipment have its limitation/disadvantage, this Canon lens is no exception. This lens does not have a large aperture & better IQ like the 70-200mm F2.8L IS. But it also does not share some of it's "disadvantages" like the higher price & weight too..

If you notice my posts in this discussion thread, most of my indoor shots were taken with Flash (580EX2) which I normally diffuse/bounce. This is because personally I believe a photographer need to know the limitation of the their equipment & workaround those obstacles (Some may disagree, if yes feel free to share your option).

Nevertheless I like thanks you for your idea of putting this lens's IS system to a test. Would be trying to take some handheld shots in long focal length with slow shutter speed. ;)

As charlesleong have suggested in the previous post to see how well the lens' IS perform with its small aperture in slow shutter speed & long focal length. Hence I had decided to use a classic waterfall & oil lamp shots for this lens' test. ;)

Both shots below were taken handheld using Canon 18-200mm F3.5-5.6 IS (EXIF is shown below the photos):

Nice shots.

I like the oil lamp shot.

Just a thought for the waterfall, maybe you want to make the shutter slower so that the water will be smoky from top to bottom.

NovJoe.

Thanks Bro... would try suggestion on the waterfall shots next time I get a chance... But I think have to bring along my tripod... :)

Your cheerleading shots have shutter speeds that are too slow. At web resolution, there is still noticeable motion blurring.

Haha.... non-flash photography not my specialty. Due to the speed of the "flyer" my AF is on the people below... but I guess should have used a 1/400 shutter speed instead.... :bsmilie:

You can't always rely on flash to stop motion. Flash doesn't actually stop motion either; your shutter speed does. In any case, freezing motion does not depend on where your AF lies. The flyer is on the same plane of focus as the rest of the people on the ground here.

When I shoot soccer, I always try for a shutter speed of 1/500s at best. Of course, there are situations where it drops below that, but I just have to make sure that it's still fast enough to stop motion.

I am a new SDLR user and having bought 18-55 + 55-250IS, i am regretting it big time as it is too cumbersome to change the lens and heavy to carry both around. I am thinking of either getting the Cannon 18-200mm or the Tamron AF18-270mm F/3.5-6.3. Any advise which will be a better buy?

too cumbersome? switch back to PnS... the main purpose of DSLR is the interchangeable lenses... but if you have to, get the canon.

Thanks for the advise... would try your advise when the next opportunity (no flash allow :() arise, Maybe I have to pump up my ISO to 800 ~1600 next time... :bsmilie:

I would advise to go for the Canon as it have a bigger aperture at the max focal length. :)

camera flash or external flash?

I am using the Canon 580EX2, mostly diffused or bounced.... :)

Another set of photos taken during the National Cheerleading C'ship 2009. The shots are taken without flash, a challenge to me in event shooting since I normally use flash to "control" movement instead of high ISO & shutter speed.

Only Minor PP, eg: Curve adjustment & adding of watermark/borders (coz have yet to find a camera that add it in automatically... :bsmilie:)
