CANON 15 - 85mm and 18 - 135mm

Anyway, fyi, MS is selling the 17-55 at $1540 and 15-85 at $1130. The 50 f/1.8 will cost about $130. :)

My ideal setup would be,
- 15-85 f3.5-5.6 IS USM
- 70-200 f4 IS USM
- 50 f1.4

Would probably wait for the 15-85 prices to cool off a little before getting one.

I would like to suggest the 17-55 instead of the 15-85 for your lineup. The reason is... you get better bokeh at f/2.8. This is particularly important at short zoom ranges and 1.6x crop. The gap between 55 and 70 is very small. You probably won't miss any important shots because it falls between 55 and 70.

If money is a problem, I would suggest that you downgrade the tele from the 70-200 f/4L IS to the 70-300mm. That's a lot cheaper, especially at B&S. It really depends on what you shoot, but for most people, the tele only comes out on occasions while the shorter zoom is the main fixture on the camera... and hence the quality counts more.

I understand that the 17-55 is a really good lens but my main contention with the 18-55 is the lack of zoom range and with the 17-55, I will just be facing the same issues again. Besides, I also understand that the 17-55 is also rather heavy and huge. My preference is for a more versatile walkabout lens and the 15-85 seems to meet it in terms of available zoom range, size & weight and potentially IQ. Also, with the 15-85, I don't think I will want to get a UWA anymore.

The 70-300 IS USM was on my shortlist but I figured I would just save a little longer for the 70-200 IS USM. I might just get the 70-300 to save money. Anyway, I will not be buying any camera stuffs till next year as I just bought the 50 f1.4 and 430EX2 over the weekend.

Ah I want this setup too! :bsmilie: I already have the 15-85 so have to save more to get the other 2 lenses hehe..

That's fast! So, how's the 15-85 so far?

I got the 50 f1.4 and it is great! Am currently using the 18-135 and will probably wait for the 15-85 prices to come down a little before getting it. Might make a trip to HK in Jan 10 and might pick up one there.

Same as you. I decided to buy 17-55mm f2.8 and suddenly heard a lot of good comments about 15-85mm f3.5/5.6. Personally, I don't have any concern about the range (I know 15-85mm is better range), price (17-55mm is more expensive) and aperture. My only concern is the photos quality. Some users in other forum recommend to buy 17-55mm f2.8 based on the following reasons:

1. In 55MM, The aperture in 17-55mm is 3 stops bigger than 15-85mm. As a result, the bokeh is better;

2. Normally, the lower the range, the better the photos quality. 85/15 = 5.67 times and 55/17 = 3.24 times.

Most likely I will buy the 17-55mm f2.8. :D
liked you said normally
i believe in that theory too
because i found it true for lenses such as the 18~200.. nice zoom rang.. but sucky IQ

but that is the GENERAL idea
it is however not so true for the 15~85
go to the website i provided at the digital picture and take a look at the lab shots

compare it with the 18~200
and then the 17~55
you'll be amaze why there's a buzz over the 15~85

hence please do not generalize
if that statement in red is entirely true. 100%
then go for a prime.. a zoom lens obviously can't beat iq as compared to a prime

btw just to prove my point

sorry for butting in
but what you said irritated me just this tiny weeny bit
and no, i don't own a 15~85 or the 17~55

I hope the QC issue is not too widespread (esp in Singapore!) as I might be buying tonight if all goes well.

Still, I also feel that this lens is over-priced as compared to the famous 17-55mm f/2.8. Any thoughts to share?

hey!!
well do check out for vignetting at the corners at the wider end just inc ase you got a bad copy!!

hahah and update us whether there's a QC issue!

FYI, was at MS this evening. Only one 15-85 with 7D kit II left and is currently reserved. Have to wait for the next order.

Hi, I bought the lens already, there's slight vignetting but don't think it's as bad as indicated in the website, will test more. ;)

Sama sama for me as well though it would look more obvious than what your pics shown when taken against a white or lighter shade background. Not sure is there anything we can do about it.

Maybe in-camera peripheral illumination correction will work?

I was there 1830 :) Looking forward to your review and pics.

BTW how much for the 7D + 15-85. I didn't ask MS yesterday.

Err, I didn't inquire too but I do know they sold the body for $2490. So if you add this amount with what they sold me on the lens, the total will be $3620. Considered cheap?

Yea...a white background will cause even the slightest vignetting caused by the lens to show up in ur pics...

Dun think it should be a cause of concern though...every lens has some vignetting no matter what...but it probably wont show up in ur everyday shots ;)

In camera peripheral illumination correction might help as well as mentioned by someone earlier.

I bought the 2nd last EOS 7D KIT II from MS @ $3488 (w/GST & via VISA).

Some samples.... be kind I'm a NOOB remember!
