CANON 15 - 85mm and 18 - 135mm

Just tried the 15-85mm with 7D at Vivo City Canon Link. Was told by the friendly counter girl that the lens just arrived yesterday. My first impression of the lens is very good with good build quality, tight zoom right and fast+silent AF with USM

I tested 15mm @ f/5.0 (1 stop from wide open f/3.5) and the vignetting is still quite visible with Peripheral illumination correction turned ON in 7D, especially against even colour background.

Peripheral illumination correction is available in 500D (as I used to own 500D), but it might not have the latest lenses (like 15-85 and 18-135) in its database. However, future firmware update should include these lenses.

Those interested in this lens should make a trip to Canon link to try out this lens :)

Oops.. sorry yup it turns out that 500D also have the feature already. I read an article earlier and it didn't mention 500D but it did so on the Canon SG website. But in terms of the database of lenses, that is another story :)

15-85 is a good lens indeed

Actually no firmware update is needed to include 15-85 and other new lenses into the camera peripheral illumination correction.

It can be done using EOS Utility 2.7 to update 500D

thank you so much for clarifying :):):)

wow the vignetting is quite bad.. even visible under f5.0
perhaps you can try using 17mm on it..... and see what happens

anyway THANK YOU really
i hope the serious vignetting is an QC issue as stated by photozone :)

Vignetting is easily corrected in DPP if you shoot in RAW. Overall the range of 15-85 is very convenient as a walk around lens, combining with good build quality, IQ and weight, I think this lens will sell pretty well.

i think so too
although there has been complains over its ranged aperture

well i do not how to use photoshop... so i think i can't rely on PP
does canon provide basic PP software?? sorry for the noob question

The software disc that comes free in the box with every new EOS DSLR is one of Canon best-kept secrets  The programs I most frequently used are Digital Photo Professional (DPP) and ZoomBrowser EX. The latest version of DPP 3.7.2 can also be downloaded from here.

DPP gives me most of the functionalities I would need for basic PP, such as curve adjustment, contrast, saturation, highlight, shadow, cropping, sharpening, white balance, stamping, Peripheral illumination correction, chromatic aberration, distortion and noise reduction. For more complicated PP, you would still need the Photoshop, but DPP gets the job done for me 95% of the time. Best part is, it is FREE

It took a while before I was convinced of shooting in RAW, but once you realised the amount of "headroom" you have with RAW, you wouldn't stop shooting in RAW :D

so u guys suggest getting it now or waiting for the 2nd batch?

Hi, that's really up to you, try asking yourself these qns,

1. Do you need it urgently?
2. Can you wait for like end of the year? etc...

Just a note of caution, the silver lining around my lens sort of peel (just a small bit), I use a needle and superglue to paste it back so please check carefully before buying.

Happy using! :)

For those who have bought 15-85, anyone bought the hood? And how much? Tks.

Hi

Can anyone show a picture of serious vignetting? how serious is serious?

Any other issues to take note of when buying the new 15-85? I need it urgently so would prefer not to wait for the 2nd batch...

Hi, please refer to link,

What equipment are you using? Camera with DIGIC 4 processor have this feature called "in camera peripheral illumination correction" to minimize vignetting. Visit shops who have this lens to hands on and see for yourself whether the vignetting bothers you. ;)

Hi, the hood is not out yet, still waiting. No news on pricing too. Sigh.

Hi, I am using 450D.. hmm.. not sure if my camera has this feature..

15-85 seems like a really good walkabout lens....but the price is like the 17-40 right? variable aperture somemore...zzz. dunno if i should get this lens. the focal range is attractive though. just need one lens when going out.

anyone knows when will the lens be out for sale? Currently this lens only comes bundled with 7D .. :( how long do I have to wait...

Hi, why don't you try asking some of the shops selling the 7D Kit II on whether can they sell the lens and body separately? This is how I bought my 15-85 lens. :)
