CANON 15 - 85mm and 18 - 135mm

actually there are quite a no. of shops already selling it already.

if i had the money to get 15-85... i'd rather get 2nd hand 17-55 f/2.8... IQ-wise, 17-55 is generally thought to be the best among crop lenses...

I believe the TS requires a versatile zoom lens for travel or walkabouts. IQ-wise at the 100% crop or pixel level, yeah maybe the 17-55 outguns (not by much, based on reviews and sample photo comparisons on the net/forums). But it loses in terms of width and range, which is perhaps more important in the context of travel/walkabout lens.

Sure, you pay more for F2.8, nice to have, but the question is, do you really need it.

yeah for most walkabouts there's no need for f2.8. i'm thinking of getting the 15-85 for its useful focal range plus good build quality. unfortunately the downside is vignetting.

easily corrected by the software canon provides

something illumination if i remembered it correctly
or if you hate PP, you can always stop down :)

the variable aperture is already unhelpful indoors. if stopped down somemore...all the people in the photo will be blur.

Hi, that's really up to you, try asking yourself these qns,

1. Do you need it urgently?
2. Can you wait for like end of the year? etc...

Just a note of caution, the silver lining around my lens sort of peel (just a small bit), I use a needle and superglue to paste it back so please check carefully before buying.

Happy using! :)

my fren rented the 18-135mm and guess wad? the silver sticker peeled off too. i guess there's something wrong with the current batch of ef-s lenses in terms of that silver thingy. it's ugly anyway...

anybody feedback this to Canon? mine also came off slightly.

man, that's nasty. you're definitely not alone man. this may just be the very reason that puts me off from buying EF-S lenses from now on. gee...canon and their QC...horrible. anyway snapboi, you are using the 15-85 or 18-135?

oh man that is bad...i wonder if this happens to everybody? haha!

Haha since the silver ring is so ugly then just peel it off lor!! :bsmilie::bsmilie:

lol...ok. the silver ring coming off is sth that pretty much scares me. but oh well...it will be my travel lens for a good many many years. dun intend to go to FF cuz i like the crop factor of 1.6x. lol...

What! and let it run around "naked"? :bsmilie:

anyway how's the build of the 15-85? solid? smooth zoom ring? any zoom creep? should be getting it next month.

--> solid and heavy

smooth zoom ring?
--> smooth enough for me ;)

any zoom creep?
--> so far didn't see any, mine less than 2 weeks only

so have you get it?

nope. deciding between 15-85 and 17-40. rented a copy of both last weekend....and there's some zoom creep on the 15-85 between 24-50mm. u might wanna extend it to that range....put it vertical up or down and check. the 15-85 has such a good IQ though, and the IS rocks!

I got the 15-85 and i have never regretted! :D

hehe, then can put a red rubber band over it. can con ppl....

anyway the 17-85 served me well as a walk about lens for more than 3yrs. though i wish it had f2.8 for nite shots. 17-55 is a killer but price kills as well... so decided to get 17-40.

Hi guys

I'm kinda new here and to dslr photography so pls pardon my noob-ness.
I've the 500D for about a year plus now and I've been thinking about getting this lens recently. (After reading this thread I think I might go for it afterall.)

I just have one more question which I hope somebody can help answer:
There's this feature "peripheral illumination" in the 500D which can help to minimise the vignetting issue, right?
Does it have to be turn on manually in the camera? Or is it already incorporated into the system by default?

Well by default it should be turned on already but just to double check go to the menu settings and check it for yourself. It does help in reducing the vignetting.
