Only when the DSLR-like compact had large range of apperature.

I don't mind to go for rangefinder and throw away my DSLR though.
Just want something simple, and more compact, like my FM3A or the Leica (but too $$$ for me now)

hmm ...its difficult to downgrade...i bought my D40 in Dec 06 and my FZ7 (7days ago)...both 6mp...but no way to compare the IQ lah...DSLR much better....maybe only when shooting macro...FZ7 + Raynox DCR 250....FZ wins....hehe

Actually if Hasselblad came up with a digital version of the X-pan, that would be the ultimate travel camera.

haha, have not owned a DSLR be4, but i believe i can downgrade...hahaha onces was using my fuji S9500 camera to take everything. Now using my Nokia N93 to take everything, just that my zoom is is down from (10X VS 3X). Carl Zeiss Optics VS FujiFlim optics.

Leica M8?

I believe the XPan is an interchangeable lens 35mm rangefinder camera system with true panoramic capability.

And as such, there aren't any digital equivalents yet... ;)

Yeah, and if you really wanted to, you can mount nikkor F lens on it with an expensive adapter, which the guy uses a bayonet from an original lens xpan lens to construct it.... and the only f mount lenses tat allow you to take the panos without much vignetting are the PC lens, all others will have to be taken at regular 3:2 crop...

Used the xpan before, really loved it, minus the max aperture at f4.. thus was looking at lens adapters... but now think i'll just settle on a leica... hahaha

I have, sort of. I used to have Nikon and Leica SLRs but find that I don't use them enough as I travel quite regularly. On my travels, I started with a FM2 + 55 f3.5, then GR1s. Now it's a Pana FX01.

I just had some great shots from Shanghai last week taken at ISO200, night scenes. Minimal noise (grain?)at 10x7 print, beautiful colours with minimal PS. I am now trying to enlarge it to maybe 20x14 and see how it looks. Wish I could post it but don't know how.

I've been thinking of a dSLR but each time I imagine it clipped to my belt and look like a duck, I go straight back to a compact. The better IQ of a dSLR just cannot beat a compact for convenience.

Downgrade heh...?? It depends on the situation and the objects you'd like to shoot

I used Nikon manual film slr then went directly to compact digital and now back into the digital slr game using my manual lens (for now).

The reason why I switched to compact for digital was the exteme high cost of digital slr at that time (only Nikon D1 was available then).

I really detested compacts cos it was holding back my creativity. To adjust just the (very limited range) shutter speed or apature, I had to dive into the endless maze of menus; when I finally managed to change it, I needed a totally different setting. So its always set on fully auto mode. The other reason is the size of those cameras are so tiny in my rather large hands; I never have a firm grip on them. And don't forget night/low light shots; those tiny flash are almost useless with guide numbers smaller than my shoe size.

To add to that, the smallest aperture for most digital compacts is only up to f/8, so the range is really small also. No reason to use manual mode at all..

erm... if not mistaken... some canon's are f2.8.... mainly f3.5 for others.... ricoh grd''s f2.4 n canon G series are usually f2s.....

but anyways, for compacts there's alot of dof, so the small aperture's only for low light situations... but use them right, you still can get really good stuff, like some pro photographers shooting with the oylmpus c5050...

Back to compacts? :nono: Maybe when capturing MOVIES... I'd still prefer dSLR over compacts. If not for the quality of the photos, at least for the SOLID build most dSLR has (esp Nikon - I feel). Even if you're not using it to capture the moements in your life, it is still a very GOOD hand-held malice weapon... :bsmilie:

I guess it is just like Drive/ Ride? On any chosen day, RIDE. But when the weather turns wet, I'd think - "Why am I not driving"?? Sigh...

Erm.. I meant the smallest aperture.. the largest aperture can be from f/2.0 on some models to f/5.6 if you zoom, so it's like you don't have much range of aperture to use. Anything smaller than f/8 will be diffraction limited because of the tiny sensor used.

It depends...say if i were to go on holidays to destination within Asia, or to places which i have visited before, I would prefer compact over DSLR...but compacts are definitely not suitable for macros or actions....the nikon P5000 compact looks good for travel purpose...

Not wide enough.. :( Would be good if the zoom range were like the Coolpix 5000.

have both and bring either along depending on the situation. my compact has a 28-200mm equivalent zoom lens and is pretty useful for most everyday/travel shots.

used to have a prosumer that could go as fast as 1/10000s and could sync with flash at any speed.

for me I will say in different languages:

Hokkien will say : 'Buay sai'
Malay will say: Tak boleh
English : No way Jose.

:)
