Bought a D70 in 2004, converted it to a toy in 2005, never look back since then. Those who know me know that I got a DSLR, yet I don't have a DSLR.

a compact versus DSLR+tele lens (e.g. sigma 70-300mm) versus DSLR+macro lens.

how would you place compact in terms of suitability to shoot macro, among the three?

becos i dun think macro conflicts with security-minded urban situations, so i cast the advantage of smaller size and less conspicousity out of the comparison, and look at the remaining factors.

i thought the advantage of the security being less aggressive towards compact plays a benefit for those doing it in such situations.
1. general travel
2. photojournalism
3. indoor events, such as concerts, shopping centre events.

I carry SLR/DSLR everywhere. And I have tried it wth compact cameras. I detect no difference in people's attitudes when you whip out a camera, be it a compact or a SLR. They stare. From the personal view, weight is not really an issue.

you mean you convert from D70 to a lomo-type camera or you modify your D70 into something else?

i guess so.. but if you are a freak for IQ then its a nono.. p&s dont go well without flash in lowlighting conditions.. so it kind of a trade off

Yes. I've downgraded... I'm using a compact at the moment. Hope to upgrade DSLR again... later.

Life is short, why not give a try to use a compact? you might enjoy using it :bsmilie:

i stopped carrying my DSLRs ever since i started baby sitting my 2 grand kids.. .

In its place, i have my trusty 30 yr old rangefinder, and a Nikon point and shoot which gives me 30mb NEFs and a true 24mm.. hehehe.. (try and guess which one it is...)

At time, I rather carry a compact out especially with family and kids. Less weight and size to take care. WIth compact, it can be position anywhere to take. Also can capture video. Not for far away object. Anything close is just nice.

Absolutely.
went form a Nikon D40 to a Sony R1
Jag

I would not consider a downgrade. I have a D300 with 17 - 55 lens and 70 - 200 lens but I use them more for work. When I am on holidays nowadays I use my trusty Nokia N95! I brought my full gear a few times for my holidays and while the photos turned out nice, it was heavy like a hell. Takes the fun out of a holiday.

There is a use for every equipment.

I'm considering trading in my spare D80 for a Sigma DP-1. I don't consider that a downgrade.

For the versatility of taking movies (why not??) Actually, sourcing for A P50/ P51 now (so can fix on an SB800 when more LIGHT is required) :bsmilie: to be used in conjunction with my D80...
