Budget travel in Japan - tips and info thread

Early Feb may not be a very good time for skiing in Hokkaido.. I know the peak season should be end Dec, around Christmas.

For those who are going to Tokyo, you may want to consider staying at Sun Members Tokyo Shinjuku. It's a small 2-star hotel just behind the Tokyo Metropolitan building (there's an observatory in that building with a good view of the city, haven't been there myself though). I stayed there last Sep and it's really cosy. [If you're into those "corner rooms are haunted" kinda stuff, I stayed in a corner room for 4 nights and nothing happened ;)] It's also walking distance to the JR Shinjuku station. Yakisoba at breakfast is also really really awesome :)

I actually went there as part of a school trip, pretty confident they didn't subsidise anything but they managed to squeeze 6 days of itinerary including accommodation, private transport, tours and meals for $1976. No idea how they did that though o_O

For those who have gone since the disaster, any issues with food / water and radiation?
The Japs seem to be hiding something... over here, we hear reports of food, rice, beef etc being contaminated... is it really rampant?

My shifu just went and came back, according to him nothing much. They can only go to area outside 80km of Fukushima and most places are quite empty (hotels etc).

Japanese are usually very cautious so if the food have problem, they will just destroy everything... so can be quite assured imo.

The MET building is definitely worth a visit. It's FOC and on a clear day you can see Mt Fuji from Tokyo clearly. It kinda reminds me of KLCC.

Thanks bro, but the Japs are also good at hiding the truth, because they want to save face...

But another friend did return from Hokkaido, and said it is fine, so I am probably going ahead with my snow plans for Feb.

Cheers

SQ is having promotion now at S$698 include tax Note there are some block out date.
if you are only travelling around Tokyo, you do not need to buy JR pass.
JR pass is needed only if you are travelling to many places like Osaka, Kyoto and Hiroshima.
In this case a JR pass is a good saving for you.

Hope you have a good time in Japan.

Thanks bro, I am headed to Hokkaido - posted my rough plans in a previous post...

I will see what Natas holds, then go book my trip, cheers.

I think Hokkaido should be quite safe from most of the radiation etc? They're quite far from Fukushima.

It's not the direct radiation, rather, it's what they are hiding in terms of contaminated food etc.

From a few isolated cows which got into the system, now we know that some rice, beef and I am not sure what else is now contaminated with radiation.

only 2 days in Osaka and Kyoto? might not be worth the money just for the 2 days. I suggest you might want to concentrate on just Tokyo and the surrounding for the 9 days... something like the example below:

1 days in Tokyo (acustom yourself to Japan)
1 day/2 days, day trip to Nikko
2 days in Yokohama, with side trips to Kamakura, Enoshima
2 days in Hakone/Lake Kawaguchi
2 days in Tokyo again

To get to Mt Fuji, easiest and less stressful is by bus from Shinjuku, the bus takes you to Lake Kawaguchiko station and from there, there are buses up Mt. Fuji (provided the weather is good (chances in winter is less than other seasons) and if they allow traffic up). Also the reason why I recommend 2 days (increase your chances to go up, while staying around Mt Fuji) and if you are staying in Hakone, you also need to take a bus to Kawaguchiko for the bus up (take note of the bus schedule during winter)

Also suggest to do the trip in your own pace, it is less taxing and stressful, plus you are more likely to enjoy yourself if you take your time to explore the place abit, instead of a touch and go trip (that is also why I suggest dropping Osaka/Kyoto)

On a personal preference, I prefer a slow and relaxing trip especially in Japan. You can spend some time sipping coffee/tea while enjoying the surrounding in the morning :) watching the local rushing to work.

But do take note to prepare yourself for winter and take in consideration of the extra baggage (your winter clothing can take up alot of space)

Hi Bro

This is another option as well...thanks for the suggestion. I heard nikko is wonderful...might drop osaka, but very tempted to visit kyoto..even if say 1 day isnt enough, i also would like to go see how it is...and in my future trips can make plans for the place to cover the balance area.

Would you pay 14,000 to 15,000 X 2 via Shinkansen, just for a day or 2 in Osaka/Kyoto? that is approx ~SGD$219 (one way) or fly star alliance for 10,000 (SGD$156). Forgotten to mentioned the overnight bus ride approx. 5,000Yen.
To me, defintely can wait for another trip. Kyoto will be great for autumn as well :)

Hey, I went to Disneyland and Disney Sea one day each also almost not enough ESP if u intend to take the rides and photo taking at the same time. Me and my wife ran thru the whole place like SOC and shooting photos at the same time.

For the above itinerary u have plan, I took 16days with shopping cramped in but yet it still feels like not enough. Perhaps it's better to split the other states like the rest have suggested.

I spent 3 days exploring Tokyo, 2 days disneyland / disneysea and 2 days in hakone. And I still feel that it is not enough
