Thanks Bro. For me the metal buckle does not bother me as it is at the side.
It really depends how long you have made your strap to be, and if you cross sling on which shoulder.
For me, I prefer it short, and that means probably 5/8 of the strap is double strap, and 3/8 of the strap is single strap. When you put attached the padding, if you don't cross sling, the pad will sit on the 5/8 of the strap that's double strap. That's fine. But when you cross strap, then it doesn't sit right on the shoulder, so you need to move the pad a bit, and you cannot do it cos' it's tight as it's sitting on the double strap section and it'll hit the buckle. You'll have to re-adjust the position, by unclasping one of the buckle of padding, and move that down to the single strap section.
Chim? It's probably easier if I show that to you in person.
Anyways, so if you adjust the strap quite long, meaning the double strap section is actually shorter, then you may not have the problem that I have above, cos' the pad will sit on the single strap section when you cross sling or when you use it on 1 side of the shoulder.
I hope my description makes sense.
The newer version is definite better in usability. If you tried the older version, you'll appreciate the newer one.
Actually once upon a time, Billingham actually made the straps a bit longer. The strap on the right hand side sits higher up, so no matter how you adjust the strap length, the middle section of the shoulder strap is always double strap. And so if you fit the pad there, cross sling or not, it can be easily adjusted without you having to remove it to move it across the buckle.
I believe they wanted to savee some cost, and if you shave off 3-4 inches worth of strap on each bag you manufacture, you'll save a "LOT". But if you ask me, the bag already cost this much, even if you include the cost of this 3 - 4 inches of the strap, the customer would still buy the bag. It's not like they have done this and say "I am trying to preserve the price of the bag" at its current rate.
To see this ... you just have to pay PK a visit and watch his old bag versus your newer hadley pro, and you'll notice it.
