make the prices like that in japan. ;p

I second that. If Canon Japan can sell at those prices and still make a profit, then why can't Canon Singapore? Is the operating cost in Singapore much higher? Is the corporate tax is Singapore much higher? I don't think so... in fact, the contrary.

If Canon is trying to practice price discrimination, then they are failing badly because there are, at present, no restriction for parallel importing and no law that prevents resale of goods bought at a cheaper price (for e.g. from overseas). And, seriously, it is not that hard to get things into Singapore from anywhere in the world. If Singapore was isolated like Siberia, then maybe most of us wouldn't have any other choice than to purchase the goods locally. But the fact is that Singapore is located at a geographically strategic location ideal for trade (refer to primary school social studies book) with minimal barriers for so-called 'local importers' to operate.

If Canon Singapore is losing business to O****e, then it just means that they haven't really thought out their business plan properly. Nonetheless, this price cut is a good first move to step up their game.

does the CS MO importers have alot of market share? I think the price drop by Canon SG is 3 fold:

1. Respond to corresponding price drop by Nikon
2. To hit the established grey importers with retails outlets like OP, TCW etc.
3. Dissuade people from purchasing overseas, especially HK.

Agree with you that whatever happens, its good for the consumers. :)

Just my 2 cts worth.

I also don't know whether the CS MO importers have a lot of market share but someone said in the first few pages that the price drop is because of Oracle!?!? Dunno true or not.. Haha..

Betwen O****E, TCW, Orient etc etc plus the people buying from KL, JKT, HK, Japan (Singaporeans fly a lot), they make up a significant proportion of the market.

actually it differs from person to person
i've tried the non IS and i could get sharp shots at 200mm at shutter speed of 1/80
anymore lower and i might need IS
to me,its not a must have but more like an insurance
but this insurance is not cheap...its $800 diff:sweat:

yea 50mm is a good buy:thumbsup:

Just come back from Japan... Most of the store is promoting Sony instead of Canon... Price wise, there is no big difference... example 50mm/f1.8 is selling around Yen10k...

It is a naive view to think that the drop in Canon's prices is due to Mr O. :bsmilie:

You guys really want to know the reasons behind it, I will share with you in the coming Canon Users Kopi Session in Aug.
