[ BBBBug ] Olympus 45mm /f1.8

anybody actually use a Oly lens on a Panny camera?
a FL of 45mm (90mm) ... wont it be bad not to have IS on the lens? :(

I use the 45mm on my G3 . Just need to be mindful of basic shooting postures .

I use it on GF2 and GX1. The more i use, the more unhappy i get.. I have no fun using this.

If anyone want to buy this lens on these cam, and include GF3, please try it first - by yourself..

Skills levels and techniques varies... For me I am seriously regretting getting this (was about to get the 45/2.8 until I read tons and tons of praise..Stupid me, never go and try try first).

(BUT - maybe, just maybe, I may have got a 'just pass the QC one'...in case I am a good workman.)

Sigh. Honestly, when one uses telephoto lenses on a camera, you need good holding technique, i.e. you need to hold the camera close to your eye with a viewfinder in your eye. Next, your shutter sipped must be faster that the inverse of the focal length.

Otherwise IS or no IS, you aren't going to be a happy camper. One had to get out of the point and shoot mentality.

I used to shoot with a Minolta XD-7 SLR without IS. So i havent had any issues using the 45mm / f1.8 on either my GH2 or GF3. You need to ensure 1) Fast enough SS & 2) Correct holding technique, including breathing. Just like firing a rifle. I dont find any issues with this. I even use the panny 20mm/f1.7 indoors in pubs and other dimly lit areas where the SS can drop down to 1/8 or lower and still get reasonably sharp photos..

Personally i feel that too many people are reliant on the IS, whether lens based (like panny) or IBIS (like oly). No matter what you shoot, even a compact, the first rule is technique of holding the cam steady. In fact, more and more photog are realising that sometimes, the blur in photos can be caused by IS and it may be better to switch off the IS.. : ) anyway.. my 2 cents..

Thank you for your advice. Please, do an actual field test according to your method above and the combi that I stated, and come back and advise.

I understand your points...

I have no problem with my 85mm on my Nikon. But I just can't get it right with his Oly45 (on GF2/GX1)!!!All these combinations also no IS/VR..And same operator - good or bad is the same denominator...

I have so much 'stress' in using the oly.

I am beginning to suspect maybe the lens...

This evening I am going to use a tripod and do a more 'serious' test.... I have semi cold storage the lens already.

Yep.. Tripod test on static subject. It should show any lens issues... Let us know how it goes...

Maybe post a sample pic. ?

Sorry. One more comment, if your Nikon is not giving problems (& no VR there).. Maybe it's cos when you use your Nikon, you have the VF as support so that the cam is very steady. Using gf2/gx1 may be diff cos no VF. Unless you bought the EVF? Maybe that's the difference?

Yes, that is one of my main points.. Hence I said the combi of GF2, GX1 (and also should include GF3 and GF1).

My comment was: from my 'problems' I strongly recommend these owners must go check and make sure they have no problem..

But, after so many years of shooting, I dun think I am that lousy, no good I agree. Hence, I also begining to suspect the lens. I actually give up using the lens - only test shot... therefore I am going to do a more serious test shoot, controlled, tripod mount, stationary target, etc...

So what the problem is w your 45? Is it just not sharp enough? I've used two copies, both are very good. I agree I don't use it much 'cause its focal length is abit too long for general walkabout w the kids. But it produces very good photos when mounted on my G3. I love this lens, and love the 12/2 even more.

The only lens I love and dislike is the 25/1.4. Optically it's fantastic, but it just doesn't balance well w the small camera. If only it's in a 12/2 size and style...

I use it on a GH1. For Photos I never had an issue -- because the lens is so fast you get high shutter speeds, even indoors.
For video it is however only usable on a tripod.

You aren't being particularly helpful here. Quit being defensive and get on with putting up a photo and let us look at it.

so far, I think you're the only one i've seen so far that is dissing the lens. If you suspect the lens for QC variation performance, go do a proper tripod test and get over it. you are asking other owners to "check for problems" when no one has had complaints except yourself?

I'm using this lens on an EP3, and the lens is fast and sharp, giving consistent results that i have not used my VF2 for a long time. Perhaps IBIS is helping me, but if the lens has problems as you say, then no amount of IBIS will help anyone.

I have totally no problems. In fact, I have never ever had a problem with any of the Olympus or Panasonic lenses that I have bought. The QC is excellent.
I think it must be either a damaged lens or a user problem. This 45 mm 1.8 is exceptional lens in terms of price, size, looks, and performance. It has a wow factor when used for portraits. Of course, the lens is only as good as the user. The photographer needs to judge lighting conditions, and subject motion etc, etc to decide how to shoot the lens. The fact that it is f1.8 and super sharp at 1.8, also means that it is quite forgiving too because it is very fast and shutter speeds can be higher so that even if technique is poor, there is enough tolerance to compensate for it.

Bought mine on friday and have been happily using it on my old GF1 :D. I'd say i like the lens very much AF seems quick (a lot quicker than my 20 1.7). I always have to be mindful of shutter speed and holding though, i get a 1/100 speed most of the time or 1/80 if i feel confident. The pictures come out nice and sharp (enough). just don't be shy to pump up your ISO to achieve the desired shutter speed, noise is easier to handle these days. Unless you are planning on doing super large prints, its all of course personal preference.

Unless you post some shots, nobody can imagine what problem you have. I'm very happy with the Oly 45mm. Sharpness or exposure error could be due to user too. For those having problems, please show us your shots.

Same experience with the lens on G3 . Agree .

Beautiful lens, works beautifully on my GX1. The camera/lens setup is so light compare to FF DSLR, plus no mirror flap, the lack of Image stabilisation is hardly an issue.
