Now I like many others, waiting for the 18-200 VR, looking for one walk around lens that is not too ex.... call MS, told me stock will prob be available after the IT fair around end of March..... ....
MS seems to get their stock quite slow. Try Lords or AP?

Okie bro, will try to call AP... I check with MS cause stay at AMK, easier for me to get if they have stock... SLS is abit way out..... was actually contemplating the 18-200 or shorter one like 18-70, 24-70, 24-80 type of lens for walkaround, but the the Holy Trinity is way way off my budget....

Oh I see.. I have both the 18-200 and the 18-70. I think there is no need for the 18-70 if you are already considering the 18-200. If you have something to use now, then the 18-200 is worth the wait. The quality of the 18-200 is the same as if not better than the 18-70 over the same range, plus you get the additional length up to 200mm which makes it a very useful single lens solution for shooting just about anything. But of course, don't compare it's quality to the trinity lenses. :)

ya lor, quality confirm cannot fight with the Trinity lens, if not, I think Nikon office now kena burnt to the ground liao... .......... also, if I the 18-70, then for the long end, I would have to look at 70-200 or 80-200, but again, cost is the factor, as well as the weight.... so 18-200 is the compromise....... of course if Nikon can come out with a AFS18-200mm f/2.8 IF VR at around 1k+, then no need to wait liao.......... heeeee

Optically nearly very tough to do a 18-200 f/2.8 version, can you imagine the size of the front element??

And even if they do succeed, the R&D will be costing a bomb, and you can seriously forget about owning one of it at 1K+.

Not forgetting, with larger aperture means larger front element which phyiscally relates to heavier glass.

Filter size for 18-200/3.5-5.6 is already 72mm, 2.8 is half of 5.6 which means diameter would be doubled!! 144mm filter size!!! Imagine the weight!!

Eh, 5.6 is 2 stops slower than f2.8 therotically according to your calculations, it should be 72 x 3 = 216mm!!!

The more common general listing for the trinities are -

AF-S 17-35 f/2.8D
AF-S 28-70 f/2.8D
AF-S 80-200 f/2.8D OR AF-S 70-200VR f/2.8G

A set of very beautiful (read: expensive) glass that completes an entire reach from 17mm to 200mm. Reputed that once you have it, you hardly need any glass anymore unless you looking for a specific specialised glass like the 85 PC, 135 DC etc. :bsmilie:

The least common will be

Watcher's definition:
AF-S 12-24 f/4G DX
AF-S 17-55 f/2.8G DX
AF-S 70-200VR f/2.8G

Astin's definition:
AF 28 f/1.4D
AF 50 f/1.8D
AF 85 f/1.4D

Does it make sense to get a 70-200 VR or maybe 80-200 non AFS one, VR too ex.... and later on 18-200, there is lots of overlap........ but then, 70-200VR can use for low light situation, like nite shoot and when tripo is not possible, and 18-200 for general purpose............ :dunno:
