Dunno why so many so concerned with sharpness. In most cases, if you don't print bigger than 8R or need to crop alot, sharpness is never a problem. There are many other attributes that are important if not more important like
Weight
Size [length & diameter] n filter size
Price
Versatility
VR or no VR
Front end rotates or not
Can use teleconverter or not
etc

Not really true if they have the intention of cropping further?

just got my copy.

My test pic, handheld (braced against a pillar) 300mm 1/15 sec, f5.6, under poor light, today raining.

Full 12 meg resolution from s3pro. Dun view at 100% as the s3pro interpolates to get 12meg so will not be very sharp at 100%. But I was very surprised at the VR2. I am not very steady but the VR2 actually enabled me to shoot at 300mm under poor light at 1/15 secs... that in my opinon is worth the $900. And this is not like one shot out of ten. I took like 5 shots braced against the pillar and I think around 3-4 is similar quality.

This lens can use teleconverter?

I wouldn't suggest using a TC on lenses which are at f5.6 on the long side. Coz when you do a multiplication to it, it'll be at least f8 to f11 effective aperture. Would cause loads of hunting if you actually get decent shutter speeds.

If you need to crop very often like in birding, then go for Primes la or getting something like the Bigma :) .

How about not often enough to justify those lenses but still need to crop?

personal view is that it is pretty sharp wide open except at 300mm where it is a little soft. VR2 is great and highly effective. The lens is bulky but not too heavy.

I wonder how does it perform in concert? Was thinking of getting this type zoom range lens for my child concert.

you'll prob have to up the ISO quite a bit
but with vr at 300mm, should give you a good reach.

where available and wat's the price?::think:

hello guys,

I'm thinking of getting this lens or save up more for the 80-200mm D version.

I understand that the 80-200 is like twice the price of this VR lens haha...

but just wondering if i should really save up for the constant aperture or just buy the 70-300VR instead.
