sorry to raise this old thread but didnt want to start a new one when there's one already.

i just bought this lens and i was wondering abt the VR function. either i am overdemanding, have overrated or simply dont quite appreciate it.

i tried taking a few shots at night and i feel that pics with and without VR doesnt look much different with the same settings and point of focus.

and i feel the focusing isnt very accurate, takes a while even in daylight plus it's easily confused?

I don't have the 70-300vr, but I do use the 70-200vr.

At night, your shutter speed is likely to be long, something like 1/2s or slower. You will need a tripod in such a situation. VR helps when shutter speed is marginal, i.e. 1/40 @ 300mm. Without VR, it's almost impossible to get a shot at 1/40. for longer exposures, a tripod is a must. Do not expect AF to be too fast/accurate because the max aperture is @ f5.6 at the long end, this would put it's AF performance worse than the kit lens.

erm.. anyone with this lens can tell me the max aperture at 70, 135, 200, 300mm? all the reviews never state.

also, read that for the AF-S consumer zooms (18-55, 18-70, 18-135, 55-200), the SWM is of lower quality when compared to eg. 105 VR, 300 VR. is there really a difference, and if so this 70-300 falls under which category? (apparently instant manual override will weaken such inferior SWM in the consumer zooms)
18-70 is true SWM... the rest of the lens you mention use 1/2 true SWM, they doesn't provide full time manual override and are usually slightly slower than true SWM.
if im not wrong 70-300VR is a true SWM lens as well. :dunno:

As long as there is a M/A-M switch, it should be a bonafide SWM.

Heard that this lens cannot use Nikon Teleconverters. Some people say can use 3rd party TC's. Anyone knows which 3rd party TC this lens can use? Anyone actually tested it with a 3rd party TC? Pls advise.

i compared the kit lens at 70mm at f/4.5 and 70mm of this lens at the same f/ stop. the kit lens is so much faster than the 70-300mm

erm.. could it be because there's much more range for the 70-300 to focus?
(meaning 18-70 focus throw shorter?)

How slow is slow? Can give a scenario? Is is too slow to take pics of moving objects at max focal length? Say for eg, flying birds?

that would depends on the direction of where the bird is flying and what type of bird.

Hi Guys,

Anyone try using this lens to take Moon shot? Do I need a tele-converter?

This is how much the moon will fill the DX frame with a 1250mm telescope. So you can expect the moon to be 4 times smaller with 300mm.

Is this a 100% crop image? The moon appears too small for a 1250mm range.

nice moon you got there

Good one! Thanks!

No it wasn't 100% crop. It's the whole DX frame resized to 640x425 for an indication of how big the moon will be in the frame.

I just managed to find one shot with 300/4. Also whole DX frame resized to 640x425. Yes, the diameter is about 4 times smaller.
