AF-S 85mm F/1.4G N

Seriously. What is wrong with the afd version that requires a change? Pick up a new one from HK or BnS would be a better investment IMO.

I had the afd f1.4 and I hated the bokeh fringing at f1.4 and f2. Really distracting to me when it appears. But that problem is common to almost all f1.4 lens I have seen. Wonder if nikon has managed to fix that.

I also read that 85mm f/1.2 L is a slow lens, but not sure which one is it, whether version 1 or 2 ?

I think Greengoblin is also Nikon user :p

Not sure v1 or v2 but I seen one of my friends used it and it was really slow. This was due in part to the large element at the back I believe.

I am pretty okay with the AFD 85mm f1.4 actually. Has served me pretty well for almost 5 years and still going strong. The new 85 does not seem (IMHO) to have much significant improvement over the old version and for a rough person like me, I prefer the build of the AFD lens :D.

The lens I really wanted them to update wasn't there 200/f4 micro :( lets hope for next year then.

And yup I am a nikon user :)

You mean the nervous bokeh right ?
I think it depends on the way you shoot.

 hmm I think the 200mm f/2 will solve this problem

dunno what you mean by nervous.

It is the green/magenta fringe which you see at out of focus area when there is a bright/dark transition.

It is VERY obvious and can be seen even on web sized pics....

I know, it's the fringe on bright/dark transition.
That's why I said it depends on the way you shoot.

But definitely the 200mm f/2 will solve the problem.

Chromatic Aberration?

200/2 will still have CA if shot in the correct conditions. Prob a lot less but it will still be there.
Relying on expensive equipment to make your problems go away is not the way to go.

Nice read

Didnt know about LoCA until I saw your link. But this is really not something that would bother a lot of ppl unless they are pixel peeping.

??? no. unlike normal CA which is only 1-2 pixel wide, this LoCA is many pixels wide and can show up even on web sized images.

normal CA is also very easily corrected via software (automated in some cases) but LoCA is tougher to correct.

It is very common in almost all f1.4 lens I have used (50mm afs and 85mm afd). But I don't see it in the f2.8 lens like the 105mm f2.8 and the 70-200mm f2.8.

When it comes to CA on the AFD, I must say I 'generally' am not bothered by it.

I guess it's what one uses the 85/1.4 for.

I personally do use it a lot for low light. In those situations, the CA becomes a non-issue since I actually managed to clinch the shot I needed.

However, I think I can understand how it matters for those who'd use it for commercial shoots. But personally, in those situations, there's always other candidates, like the 70-200/2.8 or dare I even say...200/2!

The shots were not taken by Moose (that's Moose Peterson, a professional wildlife, landscape and of late aviation, photographer) but a friend of his - Lindsay Silverman. All information can be found in his blog...

With any lens, if you plan to shoot with it's biggest aperture, never shoot to the area which has too contrast between dark and bright, so no LoCa issue loh.

Just 1 more week to go to collect lens :)

Let us know what you think! :)
