AF-S 85mm F/1.4G N

RRP only bro, but still cheaper than Canon 85L

Well, if its any consolation..... all PC-E lenses are over $3k.

Aiya....at least throw in a VR that would make me fill better.

I've been eyeing on 85mm lens for a long while; but the price I'd not compelling leh.

VR might make it more expensive, heavier, bigger, and more parts to possibly break down.

That focal length still ok without the VR, though its weird they put it into the 16-35.

overpriced and yet it will still sell as ppl are yearning for it. I will stick with the Afd

If the street price for the AF-S is around 2.1 to 2.3k, and the AF-D is around 1.8 to 1.9k, maybe there will be people who will opt for the AF-S version instead.

From what I see, this lens is currently going for S$2.8k in Japan....

Whoa! The price one pays for a no-compromise, pinnacle in quality.

u mean its already out in japan!?!?!:bigeyes::bigeyes:

Nope, I think it's available for pre-order.
Although generally Japan's lenses are slightly more exp that those in SG, we can still expect it to be around 2.5k...

ooo ... tats fast. yeah. u are right abt the pricing. i think the pricing is expected given the kind of price difference when the afs version is launched.

Is moving from 85 AFD to AFS really an upgrade? We don't really know the IQ of the new lens (in fact, the IQ of the old 85/1.4 AIS is already excellent).

Quote from Thom Hogan:

"To put it bluntly, the new 85mm f/1.4 has its work cut out for it, because optically there wasn't a lot wrong with the old one. I doubt anyone is going to upgrade just for AF-S or Nano coating. This feels worse than the 50mm f/1.4 update on the face of it: a lens redesign that doesn't need it."

Would be more of an "upgrade" if the new lens comes with VR... :)

I guess if people is doing videography with DSLR, AFS would help in terms of focusing; especially when there is rumor that Nikon may launch an auto focus video captured DSLR.

This new AF-S 85mm F/1.4G N is really a great investment

I read review of the old AF-D 85mm f/1.4, quite soft in the corner on FX body.
http://www.photozone.de/nikon_ff/538-nikkorafd8514ff?start=2

The same review also mentions that this may actually be desirable!

Think about it, if you were to shoot wide open, you're more likely gunning for the bokeh effect. It is highly likely that the softness is not a concern.

FWIW that Photozone review drew a lot of protests in dpreview -- many disagree with its findings. I mostly find Photozone reviews useful, but I do think either they have a bad copy of the 85 AFD or they screwed up on this one.
