I find it very hard to justify paying US$1,700+ for a lens when I am just an ordinary amateur photographer. Especially when there are humbler alternatives like the Sigma 30mm at about S$800/=.

this lens is not aimed at general population anyway..
but more for those who really need to use it at wide open with good results, eg photojournalist, wedding photographers, etc.
for others, the cheaper 35mm f/2 should suffice.

not really.
if you priced it at S$1.8k, you will find that there are a lot of enthusiast who will pay that kind of money for a good lens.
I am hoping nikon is just pricing it high for the "initial" period and willl lower the price after maybe one year. Their thinking is probably they cannot make enough to supply the whole world during the launch period so might as well charge a premium for it.
if you look at it, is the 35mm f1.4 really worth as much as a 24-70mm f2.8?
didnt see the price on Dpreview. considering that it is about the same as the 85/1.4; it is way overpriced.

1.8k USD retail..
i would expect around 2.4k when it hits SG
And to answer your question, I never really appreciate 24-70mm 2.8 anyway. To me, that lens is boring in perspective and 2.8 is not enough DOF for me. But I know it's a useful range for most people. And it's overpriced at 2.4k too IMHO

Then isn't $3k a very expensive price to pay for a boring perspective lens like 24mm f1.4? Which is even more boring as you cannot change to 70mm....
But then the 14-24mm and 70-200mm cost similar in price to the 24mm f1.4 ...
I still believe that a f1.4 primes like the 35mm and 85mm should be relatively affordable as it is not hard to do f1.4 lens for those focal length. They are close to 50mm.
Frankly, if nikon updated their 35mm f/2 lens and sold that for $700, a lot more nikon customers will be much happier.
After having AFS 35mm f/1.4G, AFD 35mm f/2, AFS 35mm f/1.8G DX, I don't think Nikon will update the 35mm f/2 in a very short time.
Actually what we need from Nikon prime series is the replacement of AFD 135mm f/2 DC
second this
I think they will.. soon.. that lens is pretty old liao.. about same age as the old 85 1.4D I think.. together with the 105 f/2 dc
abit long in the tooth
need af-s, removal of the dc feature, and nano coating.
i'm all for it
I think you will find one of them ? being announced in FEB 2011 - along with the 200 f4 Micro.... Aug 2011 will see the 180 f2.8 being replaced with VR, and Sept 2011 will be D400 and a 300 f4 with VR 2 ( OR the 80-400 being replaced also with VR2 ).
2011 is the year of Longer Lenses D400's and D4's ( 2009-2010 was for fast wides / mids AND pro Telephotos )
Great launch by Nikon, they have finally delivered the updated version of 35/1.4 & 85/1.4. I am now torn between the Nikon AF version and the Zeiss MF version...
With its launch, perhaps it will drive the lengendary 28/1.4 down to a more realistic and affordable price in the 2nd hand market....last check on ebay they are still going for 4K plus...
I love 1.4 or faster lenses...thanks Nikon & Zeiss
