A900

Most likely it's a firmware thing. I remember my A700 getting "stuck" a few times in a day soon after I bought it. The firmware fixed all that. Let's hope the A900 fix comes out soon.

Is there some sort of "APS-C" mode in the camera, whereby you can still continue to use APS-C lenses on it? I thought I read about it somewhere, but am still not sure about it?
yes there is. it's in the menu. i asked the sony sales rep, they said cannot use with digital lens. but apparently the function is on the camera's menu. guess they are not that well verse afterall :P

Ah yes, just saw from dpreview.com http://www.dpreview.com/previews/sonydslra900/page5.asp

The Alpha 900 is quite happy working with lenses designed for the APS-C (cropped sensor) models. The camera detects when such lenses are attached and automatically crops images taken (the image size menu changes to reflect this; you can select up to 11 MP only). What it doesn't do is crop or mask the viewfinder, nor is there any indication at all that you've got a DT lens attached. The APS-C crop is indicated on the focusing screen (see below), but that's it. With most lenses you'll see some vignetting in the viewfinder especially at wide angle settings (the 18-70mm DT for example, vignettes at anything below about 24mm.

Hmmm... I'm so bought into this A900 I might just pick up one more as spare..!
:D
And then I hear the A800 is coming shortly...!!

What should I add to my collection now that prices have tumbled so much?

>> A700 / A900?
>> A350?

maybe just wait for the shortly release... a700 has a replacement soon :bsmilie:

Question: If an APS-C lens is mounted onto the A900, would metering be affected? Especially multi-segment metering, seeing that a large part of the sensor would be blacked out.

I'm considering FF, but still thinking of using my 16-80 on it for the time being. (Body plus 24-70/2.8 at one go is a bit unrealistic for me, finance wise.) Anybody have any test results to show, of APS-C lenses mounted on FF?

Thanks.

Metering is not done using the sensor. As for aps-C on FF, try dpr and dyxum. :)

Err... anyone can tell me what the price is for the A900 now? Oldflower bought body + grip on pre-order for $4550... pretty steep still... I was hoping for $4000 for body and grip... am I asking for too much?!

Oh, I am prepared to buy it only end of next year...

Yeah, I realise that. However, doesn't the what the metering module "see" the same thing as what's shown on the viewfinder? The camera only crops the final image, but does not mask the sensor or the viewfinder. I'll go check DPR and see how, eh?

Made a call to one of the local shops recently. Yes, body + grip is about S$4500.

I think the A700 took about a year before price drop, no? Anyway, is HK still the cheapest place to buy? About a month ago, Wing Shing was selling the 70-200SSM @ S$3000+equiv, which is more expensive than the S$2650 we can get locally. :dunno:

Those of you who thinks A900 is beyond budget, maybe wait a couple months; I heard a lower model A800 is in the pipeline due out 2009 first quarter. Supposedly another FF, maybe lower in MP, and cheaper as such... who knows, may even have LV for those who love LV feature.

... there goes my bluddy resolution not to buy anymore... :embrass:

Could be a more viable option for me if it's true. At this moment, I seriously think 24MP is overkill.

synapseman;

yah its quite an overkill. pics produced in RAW are a little over 30Mb.
Edits in 30+Mb 16bit TIFF files on PS7 but needs to convert to 8bit in order to print, or be saved as JPEG.

Walieewww... I just bought 2 500Gb HDs...

... new resolution; NOT to make ANYMORE resoultions.

Excuse me for going a little off topic here;
.. but where besides Cathay can I buy the new Gary Fong Universal (clear type) diffuser?
and I also wonder will it fit nicely on my SONY F58AM?

I used to make my own DIY diffusers out of round microwaveable plastic food containers, but am sick of it cracking after some time in use.

Would appreciate some leads on this. :dunno:

i think not always all shops selling cheaper rite? even ebay selling A900 at over SGD 4.4k
coz another FF body coming out next year.. i got a feeling a900 might drop abit? maybe no la... but a cheaper FF body will be a joy for a lot.. especially users from the minolta era

bro, gary fong's universal lightsphere is universal, comes with a strap to fit any flash.

but there are several replicas in the market as well.

got mine here: - http://store.tagotech.com/index.php?cPath=21&sort=3a&page=2

there are different sizes available. just do a quick measurement on ur F58AM and counter check with the size chart in the website.
