Confirm its a A850 Full Frame and the price is about 20% to 30% (RSP) cheaper than the A900 ( RSP )launching around Oct or Nov. 2009 .
A lot of New feature but the body is not as solid as the A900 Only by a little only.
Just wait and there will New Firmware Upgrade for all present A700 and A900.

Sources are from my Trusted Japanese conterparts in Japan .
I just got back from Japan only .

Cheers

Hi OLDTIMER, Any news on A700 replacement from your trusted source in Jap..??

cool that the specs are out, seems identical with the current a900, maybe the launch of the body price would be near 3k? :D

Thx Titan10k for the leak specs. I went thru it & didn't really find any new features le. oldtimer said lots of new features. Can someone who's familiar with the Alpha system highlight whats new with this A850 vs A900? TIA :D

Maybe this leak is a fake? The real Macoy is going to cos the world to sit up?

Wow if source is true I hope for a newer firmware for my A700! Lets hope for better noise control and yet retain its BEAUTIFUL colour production!~

everything is falling into place!

Sony reminded myself a lot to Acer. Acer is now one of the most profitable and commands marketshare of Notebooks in US (where all non-US company fails to do so). One drawback is that such a new player ( in that product area ) usually create products and 'forget'. Meaning no firmware update, short product life-cycle and either left behind to common trend (missing of liveview) or ahead, but lack of mainstream features.

If I recall correctly, out of A200 onwards to A900, there are only firmwares released for A700 but nothing else. So instead of doing parallel maintenance of existing model, Sony is busy with new models... a lot of those :)

My laptops are now both Apple and Thinkpad (IBM now Lenovo). I have a 5 years old notebook which IBM / Lenovo still publishes new driver time to time. My Acer stops producing any new driver after 6 months :)

If A850 really has better quality compared to A900 (e.g. good noise control, etc), then it would be a sign that they could have done better in the current bodies.

I was thinking, if A700 was discontinued, and there is no replacement, wont Sony be missing a model at that particular price point? I'm assuming that A850 is around 3K, how bout the 1.7k to 2k region?

i presume that there should be a replacement for a700 to fill it up

That's what we are saying for years to fill up the gap between the 300 and 700 series. Although the 500 series appeared on Sony website since months, still no action. Sony is unpredictable in their roadmap .. like.no.other ..

Nikon D300 was released roughly the same time as the A700. Do you want to see its successor to be the same as what the D300s to D300 now? Patience is virtue.

With the recent launched of the "new" range A230, A330 & A380, the concern is understandable, more cosmetic than features upgrade.

The A850 from specs looks like a D300s --> D300 :sweat::sweat:

Well only time will tell... Hope oldtimer is right, that the new A850 has lots of new features & not just corner cutting "slim" ver of the A900

But looking through the leaked user manual, it didn't appear to have features the A900 don't.

From the manual, i gather minor corner cuts namely:

1) from prism to mirror viewfinder & smaller 98%
2) 2 BIONZ processors vs 1 BIONZ so slower fps
3) No remote

Seriously, i think Sony can drop the price of the A900 to A850 w/o resorting to such strategy, & then intro another model with more features at the higher end. More value for them me feels.

It looks to me that in bad econ times, all they did was face lift & repackaging to tide over.

Not sure how much market share they can grab. Owners with the older A200, 300 & 350 not likely to "upgrade" to the newer line cos nothing compelling except aesthetic changes, unless going to FF, A700 is going to be replaced soon so will likely to hang on their horses. New users looking for an entry DSLR has many other options that gives more bang for the buck.

Personally dun think Sony strategy will gain them significant market share this time round

I want the firmware for A700. So that it will last longer in my hand. heeeeeeeee

What about this for an argument: who says that an A700 replacement will take place and whether this is soon? Perhaps the 500 series will fill the gap and anything above that is focusing on FF only. With Sony, nobodoy knows.

I mean, If you would have told me a few weeks ago that the 850 is a downgrade from a 900 I would have called you nuts as well. I guess you get where I'm heading it, right?

Thanks for the link to DK's article... very interesting...
