A55 availability status

Got my A55. Quite happy with the performance except for my fav lense 30 F1.4 does not work to my expectation. Video is sharp but seems like MP4 is sharper than the mts extension. Could someone tell me whether it's true or my eyes are playing with me.

I came from KM7D, I would say A55 is very user friendly cam. I just spent a few hours playing with it and I think I know most of the features already. I quite like the Multi ISO NR feature it's very useful and also the eye focus feature is very good for newbie (but to not me though ;p). Grip is a bit small, I mounted some heavy lenses and A55 felt like not balanced (like lifting up by the heavy lense, :bsmilie:). Overall, I am quite pleased. I'm using the vivid settings and colors are quite good. But I haven't really shot in the daylight so I cant comment on the day shots.

If someone would sponsor me a zoo/Birdpark trip, I would probably show them the power of A55 with my skills.. :bsmilie: (just kidding)

welcome bro... I was about to buy A55 but the shop gave me a very good deal fro A33 since I dont use GPS and faster burst rate (10fps) I've opt to A33 instead save me almost 300bucks to buy other stuffs

I think both A33/A55 are good camera menu is pretty easy to learn I hardly look at the user manual unless I am not familiar with the feature... I have not played with video yet mostly took photos testing it out I have some outdoor shots (mostly) using the 18-250 I find this lens good all rounder but a bit soft at extreme ends of the focal and placing CPL or thick filter can cause vignetting at wide :(

But so far like you said it's a very good cam coming from Olympus E-System just get some use to the menu/buttons and functions I find A33/A55 was design really for bigenners and not so beginners :) coz of the simplified menu

I am just curious on what vertical grip could be used for A33/A55

China prices selling Sony A 55 with 18-55mm at S$980.00.without official receipt.;)

Bro, local version is A55V ...china version is A55 ...ie: got no GPS (and who knows what else!) ...you add in Airticket, and lodging, ...savings not there anymore ! :bsmilie:

I am a fellow e620 user as well and really interested in the A55 but really wonder whether there is a huge size/weight difference... ?
And EVF vs OVF... what's your view?

Btw, I think i heard that there is no vertical grip for A33/A55 because it is meant to be small in size.

Looks like Oly entry level DSLR starts shopping elsewhere with the lack of entry level updates from Oly makes me try Sony hehehe

If you're Oly setup is like mine with 14-54mm the A33/A55 plus 18-250 is lighter but almost the same form factor as lens is almost as 14-54.

EVF vs OVF man you must see to believe it.. Sony EVF is like having your LCD infront of you... it's clear and very good I must say. What you see on the LCD is also displayed in the EVF oh and it's 100% view EVF

But if you're into manual controls or used to tweaking your cam setting/config you wont find much in A33/A55 even the scroll implementation is a bit different from Oly so must get used to it it's a pros and cons... In E620 I could have all my setting mostly readily in A33/A55 you will need to use the 4-way button good example is when you change value of your WB (manually e.g. 5500Kelvin)in Oly you can scroll in A33 left and right button.... its those small things. I find A33/A55 is simplied appraoch while Oly E620 is more like the bigger sibling of A33/A33 mybe A550 or A700

I would say they E620 and A33/A55 are catered for different users... E620 is more to amateur-enthusiast while A33/A55 for beginners

here's some pix ref for you :)

Actually camera is just a tool to take pictures,it really depend on the shooter knowledge of know how. If he is totally a new bird to the camera, giving him the best camera he would not even able to produce a good decent picture. A simple camera can even produce a very stunning pictures,so to says entry level or mid level is just a indicative . Do not be too dependent on the so call mid Pro Or FF professional. In the end u are the best tool of the camera.Just enjoy what u have..............following camera body there is no ends.:)

yes i do agree with you like you and me maybe we are just both hobbyst and doesnt earn from photography and doesnt need to invest in high end lenses and body.

My reason for moving to Sony was Olympus has no plan in releasing newer and faster entry level cam my E620 beats the A33 + 18250 IQ anytime hands down but the AF is really a big let down with my Oly :( once my wife joke saying how long do I keep smiling before you can can take a shot hehehe. I ended up using MF just to finish it.

Welcome to the Sony DSLT gang ! :bsmilie: (Believe you're aredi an Alpha shooter) ...coming from regular DSLR, the new A33/A55 takes abit of getting use to (what with the smaller size, EVF, SLT and a whole slew of new features).

Incidentally, I'll be at the BP this sunday, ...say hello if you bump into a couple both with Sony Alphas ! :bsmilie:

Is it just me or is there anyone else who feels the A33/A55 shutter release sound is 'addictive' ?:bsmilie:
I've been playing with an A500 for several months and dun feel anything about it's shutter release noise but the A33/A55 shutter is like firing off a laser gun liddat ! ...makes one wanna shot 10fps just to hear the sound !

yeah the shutter sound is a bit different... I hope we wont spoilt the shutter specially with AutoHDR and AutoISO hehe

Hi bro,

I have read your post in both the Olympus and Sony threads and I don't think it's a good comparison between the A33 against the E620. The DSLT is a new technology as compared to an DSLR and the reason why I got an A500 instead of the A33/55 is that I felt that the SLT is like a prosumer cam and not a true DSLR. Actually the Sony 18-250mm is just a consumer lens and cannot be compared to the Zuiko lenses that Olympus has. If you compare the super zooms among all the other brands, I would say that the Sony's fair pretty well in terms of performance and price. Different cameras have different settings and algorithm so if you mount the same lens (e.g. Sigma 30mm f1.4) to your Olympus and the Sony, you will not see the same results too.

A comparison between the A500 and the E620 may be more relevant. Anyway, this is just my view and opinion. No hard feelings. :)

Thanks bro for showing some respect with E620 ^_^ I think the IQ is a lot to do with the glass I'm sure with a proper glass on A33/A55 this could fly :) I like so far what I am seeing with A33 and not regretting getting it. How I wish my E620 is half as fast as my A33 then i would not be here rightnow having two system in my dry cabinet. But the thing is there's no roadmap for E-XXX series and iether we are forced to upgrade to E5 which is 2.4K worth or go m4/3... So moving to Sony/Canon/Nikon/Pentax entry level is the only way for us E-XXX users or stay.

I am not really stressing the IQ of A33 vs E620 if I did I do apologize coz this is the only systems I have rightnow with. But I like what I am seeing so far with my Alpha. I might move to A5XX or A7XX if I'll out grow A33. For now I'll enjoy this fun camera

Olympus is a very good system. I had a E500 once but only with the kit lens. Like you I was using 2 systems and needed the build in IS so I had no choice but to dump the E-system. Every system has their own strength and flaws, I enjoy getting to know real users rather than fan boys and I admire your maturity and positive attitude. :)

Pity that Olympus seems to be moving away from 4/3 and they are not upgrading their body line up as frequent as they should. Lens line up wise, I would say they are pretty complete already. I was so tempted to get the E30 when it was launched but was using the A700 then so not much difference in terms of feature upgrade. If Sony did not take over Minolta back then, I would have gone the Olympus way. :)

I am glad to hear that you are happy with your A33 for now. Hope to see you in our outings soon and happy shooting. :)

Actually I could understand your situation, especially since Olympus has stated that E-5 is the last DSLR with mirror and no further development on 4/3 lenses.

Yes, when I had A700 coupled with CZ1680, it was a formidable gear with ample sharpness to match even more expensive competitors.

I believe A33 and the much anticipated A77, coupled with the upcoming new CZ1680sam will relinguish that strength again...in a affordable price somemore.

The only 2 strong contenders I would forsee are D7000 and K5 which are also looking very strong.

Yeah that's the few reasons why I've opt to see what Sony have in thier basket, as Olympus has no more plan in developing it's entry level DSLR

Yeah would love to join some outing I too am still learning ;)

Thanks bro... hmmm I think I know what will be my 18-250 replacement then :) Normally I would want to ahve UWA, short wide tele and a telezoom in my bag but was tempted with the 18-250 and some good reviews. I want something as sharp as my Oly 14-54... will hunt for my 18-70 (hope it's not that expenssive)

The 18-55mm will be a sharper lens than the 18-70mm of course there is sacrifice to the range. The CZ16-80 or the Sony 16-105mm will be a good choice. As I prefer to have a saperate lens at the longer end I had opted for the 16-105mm instead of the 18-250mm and never regret that. You may want to try the famous 'beercan' - Minolta 70-210mm f4 too. Now my traveling kit will be 11-18mm + 16-105mm + 70-210mm. :)

I want wide lenses coz I shoot landscape and architecture... I think 11-18 is good will read some reviews about Sony lenses and Minolta :)

I certainly enjoyed the last few postings starting from #250 !

They were matured and meaningful exchanges which did NOT had to resort to product bashing or "mine's better than yours" mentality or fan boys type squabbles that's so common in so many threads.

Kudos to you guys!

Each system has it's good and bad points and no matter what your system is we should respect each other we are not here to wage war we are here to enjoy photography :) we have our own reason why we choose to buy what system we are currently using.

I still learing and researching a good lens or a must have in Sony/Minolta :)

I think that would have to be either a 50f18 SAM or the new 35f18 SAM for Alpha APS-c shooters ! :bsmilie: ...cheap and good !
