I will be quick to agree with your point.
But there are some pro-photogs who might find the latest, greatest, fastest, biggest cameras helpful to their work. Then again this is a small group of people in the photog community.
there are a small number of guys whom i know here in germany, they are still using the mk2 like me. doing lots of editorial work, and yet still produces great images.
i also have 1-2 of contacts, whom are using the 1dsmk3, is because they can afford to do so, and they are doing relatively well in the business.
well.... from what i can see, they see the potential NEED for the quality work, as the believe that the upgrade would JUSTIFY their needs.
and i am one of those who believe that, an equipment should be able to JUSTIFY your work, and your NEED. and not be used as something to be shown around, telling people you have the latest gadget on the block.
really. i came across someone shooting at oktoberfest 07, the images were really nice and all, as he showed me and my designers. and guess what. shot using 10d....
i cant show because of the contractual terms i signed. if not i would have posted a sample to show.
until now.... believe me. i believe in this digital age, where technology is made user-friendly and products being designed around the user, ultimately its still the skills that count, and the experience and knowledge of the photographer rather than what the camera can produce and deliver.
and if i give the photographer a film camera, i am sure he would be able to take great pictures, as he would with a dslr.
just sharing my views... afterall.... i havent come across any images of the replacement cam. so if theres news, definately theres pictures. otherwise. i believe its just plain rumours again, and all news without solid evidence.
btw. is there such a thing as a "soft 16-35mk2" ?
