If that's your point of comparison, we can crown Sony the champion now!
Canon is the champion when it comes to crippling features. No other company can beat them. While most want to throw in more stuff, Canon takes them out. As the saying goes, less is more. LOL!

With Canon, the problem is not the lack of technology. The issue is whether they're willing to pack some of that cutting-edge technology into an affordable package for the man on the street. (Incidentally, Nikon still does not offer a single diffractive optic lens.) Or whether they feel those technology should only be made available to those who are willing to pay thru' their noses.

On a personal note, I still cannot get over the fact that they are not willing to include the lens microadjustment custom function on the 40D. That should NOT cost them a single cent. :angry:

Yeah, they should put more in. Being the technological leader is great, but they should also put in some good stuff esp those don't cost them much but would instead cost them effort to cripple or engineer out. Also how much does it really cost to weather-seal a body?

I am still hoping for great specs for this one. I want to believe......it is a movie.

Whether a company is a leader in DSLRs can be affected by whether they make sensors. Agree with that.

Whether they make Playstations, printers, LCD TVs, washing machines, air conditioners, hifi, cars, ships, etc etc is almost irrelevant. If that is important, then one of the big Korean electronic chaebols should be king. Like LG - they even have an oil refinery whoa!

In fact, probably the reverse is true. Nikon, Canon and Sony (The Minolta branch) were all imaging/optics specialists, arguably Nikon more than the other 2.

My old Nikon uses Kodak, then Fuji film. :) They do sensors now too.

I think u guys are very OT already. We're not here to start a brand war.

Back to the 5D II...

How about this 2009/2010 Lineup to make life difficult for the competition!

1DR 50MP FF 2.5FPS S$25k specialist model
1DS III 30MP FF 4FPS S$10K studio model
3DS 21MP FF 5FPS S$6K cheaper studio model
5DII 16.6MP FF 6FPS S$4K serious amatuer
10DII 12.8MP FF 3FPS S$2,500 (5D with new LCD and liveview)

1D IV 12.8MP APS-H 11FPS S$6K for sports / journalism

50D 12.8MP APS-C 6.5FPS S$1,400 serious amateur/sports
500D 14MP APS-C 3.5FPS S$1,000 amateur
1000D 10MP APS-C 3FPS S$700 entry level
5000D 8MP APS-C 2FPS S$500 super entry level fighting model

The 1DR will elevate Canon to a new level for FF (probably no further as lenses struggle to resolve to that level)
The 1DSIII and 3DS will sit just above/below the Sony/Nikon 24MP models
The 5DII will fight the D700 and D3 on specs
The 10DII will fight the D700 on price
The 1D IV will fight the D3 on speed

I am waiting for this model for a long long long time.

Wow Russ ... that would be a nice painting.

But I really don't think its competitors will sit down there like shoot ducks. ;p

Anyway, it's a nice one.

:)

I really don't know how best to make out of your 'line-up' ... very ideal indeed but from an economic point of view, not very likely :dunno:

Here's my take :

EOS 1DsMkIII - Pro FF Flagship DSLR SG$12,000
EOS 1DMkIII - Pro Sports DSLR SG$7000

EOS 3D - Enthusiast/ Advanced FF DSLR SG$4200
EOS 7D - Entry level FF DSLR SG$2250

EOS 40D - Enthusiast/ Advanced Entry DSLR SG$1800
EOS 450D - Entry Level DSLR SG$1400
EOS 1000D - Super Entry DSLR SG$850

As for what I make out of the '3D' and '7D'

3D - follow-up replacement for the 5D, 16mp, 5-8 fps, 30 RAW buffer, Card limited JPG buffer, LiveView II, Dual CF card, DIGIC 4, Build-in flash, 3" OLED display, weather sealed ( in between 40D and 1D build quality), Dual mode FF and Crop shooting, additional picture modes such as those found in P&S cameras, true 14bit (maybe 16 bit) dynamic range, (perhaps) 21-25 pt AF system, ISO 100-12800 native ( extended 25600 or maybe even more)

7D - Essentially a tweaked (improved) 5D sensor placed inside a body with similar build quality and feature set as that of the 450D. With a body size similar to a 40D instead and probably shares the same battery as the 40D.

Plausible ? :think:

Here's my unromantic but pragmatic take. By Dec 2008, the Canon line up:

* 1Ds Mark III
* 1D Mark III
* 50D (FF 40D with popup flash, 16mp and S$2999)

Look at the bottom of the 1000D ad on page 3 of the Straits Times today, it says that 5D has 15 AF points. A slip by canon marketing?

That statement is true. 5D has 9 visible AF points and another 6 invisible ones surrounding the center AF point to increase sensitivity. Check out dpreview review on 5D for that information. :)

You guys must be having wet dreams again. LOL!

There are 6 'hidden' AF points.

When I first saw 15 I did a double take as well.. even though I own a 5D ;)

I'd long forgotten about the extra six even though I have them enabled in custom functions. Thanks for the reminder!

The 6 invisible AF points inside the partial metering circle will only activate in AI Servo mode using the center focusing point. Initially i though that it'll light up as well but only when i reviewed the pics then the AF points show.
