Ok, so both my source and your source have contradicting statistics. Hmm.
Im not as much bothered about whos right or not in the statistics games, only brought it up on accusations of conjuncture. Im much more bother with the direction that Canon is taking in pursuing numbers in the megapixel race. Im not looking at stuff like DxO or anything. Just plain comparison pictures on noise levels. Just comparing 40D and 7Ds images, its troubling to see that 2 years of sensor development has brought no real noise reduction.
Some people have been asking for better sensors instead of more megapixels, but to no avail. I guess maybe theres a huge mass of people asking for megapixels out there? :dunno:
It was not an accusation

it was a direct question, which you answered with your chart.
However, I think the picture will not be complete without the 2009 figure. When the 2009 figure is out, and if you look at the latest 3 years (2007-2009), I suspect you will see that Canon is losing market share, Nikon is losing market share and Sony may gain market share if the trend of 2007-2008 continues.
Note that in your chart, Sony gains almost as much market share as Canon lost over 2006-2008....
Given that Sony is the king of megapixel count (A850/A900, previously A700), it could be that consumers want more pixel count...:dunno:
Now that is definitely a conjecture

, but could well be true.
As for the 7D/550D sensor, the fact that a 18mpx sensor can match the DRange and ISO performance of much lower density sensors is evident enough the amount of R&D achievements made on that sensor. I do not own the 7D nor the 550D (yet) but personally, I am truly impressed.
Now what if Canon keeps mpx low?
In terms of noise, even with a 18mpx sensor, I believe by downscaling an 18mpx image to 12mpx, you will reduce noise. Will this down scaling produce an image less noisy than if the sensor is originally 12mpx? I don't know.
In terms of DRange, color, etc...? Comparing the D3s vs D3x which likely use very similar sensor technology but the D3x has double the pixel count. In terms of DRange...
http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/en...287|0/(onglet)/0/(brand)/Nikon/(brand2)/Nikon
It seems like the D3x has better Drange than the D3s
D3s (12mpx) - 12EV
D3x (24mpx) - 13.4EV
So packing 2x as much pixel into a camera can actually result in better DRange? hmmm...
