550D start sell next week

550D noise will be a little shy from 7D from my views. Else, it will really hit 7D sales...
Dpreviews have images samples at ISO3200 & 6400. ISO3200 looks usable after image cleanup at pc.

yeah nikon is great at camera making for the high end users. that's why ppl like me on a budget won't be able to enjoy their gold ring lenses. they need to create more f/4 constant lenses the way canon does it and keep the price reasonable. when i was making my decision between all camera brands...canon has the best route to progressing to FF over the years. their L lenses aren't exactly expensive cuz there's f/4 options. and after a few years, when u move to FF u can bring those lenses along with u. however for nikon, their high end lenses are all f/2.8 and u can imagine the price tag along with such lenses. ouch. after some calculation... if i go nikon i can only afford to use their DX lenses (which are great, reasonably priced), but i wont really be able to bring them with me when i move to FF in the nxt 3 years.

well if i had the moolah, i wld definitely go nikon. those guys are really dedicated camera makers who listen to photographers.

and i really wonder whats so hard about putting 'grid on demand' inside the viewfinder??? wad the hell is canon thinking? to have grids i haf to specially go buy some stupid filter and fix it inside my camera?? gee. from my pov, canon just wants consumers to pay and pay. the one grand efs lenses dun even come with lens hood, while the 1 grand L lenses do. doesn't make sense man. sad.

Canon is loosing market share in the low light shooters market segment.

The entry segment is one they’re relatively safe. It’s the prosumer/events/wedding photographers section that they’re loosing share because of their constant insistence more MP is better.

Canon has ALWAYS been bigger than nikon in share and company size. A better comparison would be to compare share relative from year on year.

Here is the market share from year to year in Japan, which is often a good indication of the market share figure:

In 2007 Nikon actually beat Canon. Now they are down again, unfortunately.

Do you have any figures suggesting that Nikon is beating Canon in any sector that you are referring to or it is just your gut feel?

Thanks for insinuating i’m making empty conjuncture :)

That’s percentage points difference from market share in 2006 to 2008

I didn’t say Nikon BEAT canon, I said Canon lost market share to nikon, and yea well, the rest of the crowd.

They’re still top dog, barely. But from a once dominant position, isn’t this cause for concern?

Blogs are ablazed with seeming decision by Canon to win on ‘marketing grounds’

Well, the photographer is more important that then camera yes, but when you start to not listen to photographers, and go by marketing angles instead, it’s cause for concern. I do hope canon comes round thou, with the 60D

oh and btw, JAPAN is a pretty A-typical market, from a economic standpoint. I don’t think they’re representative of global sales at all. :)

But yea, it’s well known that Japan is just about the only place Canon keeps its big lead. Your figures are correct.

... should wait for 550D or just get the 500D if 550D yet to release during the 11 - 14 march?
haha

Wait. Unless you want to experience the unique feeling of buying the 500D then having the 550 come out the following week.

(Assuming you have the budget for both of course)

: ))) haha! exactly, the feeling of buying a old model when the new one is coming out soon sucks!

*THINKING, THINKING.

Well, there are fellow CSers here waiting for the 550D to launch so that they can get the 500D at a lower price (assuming the price of the 500D will drop that is).

So, sucky feeling or not, up to individuals...

:)

I just came back from HK 2days ago and big shops like Broadway, Man Shing started selling 550D already.. Looks solid.. priced @ HKD7.6k.. with kit 18-55 ;)

Wow that's about $20 shy of $1400...

Hopefully Singapore sells for less than $1.3k...

;p

Erm...less than 1300 at Canon I mean...

:bsmilie:

i believe the price should be the same as 500D when it was launched. dun forget the rebel series is meant to go head on with nikon's consumer range products. so the prices need to be competitive too. it can't be too close to d90. but thats just wad i think. and 1000D is way too old to be competitive.

I think I and a three friends are the only one doing that. :bsmilie:

The rest of the world are either keeping or dumping their 500Ds already. :p

Good for you and your 3 friends! At least there is a target for all of you to look forward to!

That said, why not try looking at the B&S section? 2nd hand pricing should be pretty attractive?

Good luck!

:)

Canon changes bodies like we change our clothes :bsmilie:

I am surprised this crops up in a thread about 550D availability. :bsmilie:

Anyway...

Firstly, if Canon continues to dominate like in the early 2000... then we'll be in trouble 'cos camera prices will be sky high and we won't have the 7D. As it is, we need to thank competition for it.

Secondly, in 2009, Canon dominates the Japan DSLR market by a fairly convincing margin. Of course, with more competition from the m43 market etc, Canon market share is not anywhere near 50% but it's still very high. The m43 market has hit Nikon and Sony most badly. Nikon sales numbers have tumbled down to their 2005 figures.

From Japan's BCNRanking:
2009: Canon (39.1%) Nikon (31.3%) Panasonic (8.7%)
2008: Canon (40.1%) Nikon (39.9%) Sony (9.2%)
2007: Nikon (43.8%) Canon (40%) Pentax (5.8%)
2006: Canon (44.6%) Nikon (33.6%) Pentax (9.2%)
2005: Canon (52.1%) Nikon (29.3%) Pentax (7.3%)

Here are the global market shares for the past few years. The 2009 figures should be out by the end of March.

2008: Canon (38%) Nikon (37%) Sony (13%)
2007: Canon (42%) Nikon (40%)
2006: Canon (47%) Nikon (33%) Sony (6%)

Ok, so both my source and your source have contradicting statistics. Hmm.

I’m not as much bothered about who’s right or not in the statistics games, only brought it up on accusations of conjuncture. I’m much more bother with the direction that Canon is taking in pursuing numbers in the megapixel race. I’m not looking at stuff like DxO or anything. Just plain comparison pictures on noise levels. Just comparing 40D and 7D’s images, it’s troubling to see that 2 years of sensor development has brought no real noise reduction.

Some people have been asking for better sensors instead of more megapixels, but to no avail. I guess maybe there’s a huge mass of people asking for megapixels out there? :dunno:

2008: Canon (38%) Nikon (37%) Sony (13%)
2007: Canon (42%) Nikon (40%)
2006: Canon (47%) Nikon (33%) Sony (6%)

Actually it does seem the statistics agree. Globally, Canon has suffered 9% nett lost from 06 to 08 while Nikon rose 4% nett. Hmm :dunno:
