550D start sell next week

IMO i don't think the 500D prices would drop quite significantly, given it had a $100 price drop already in December.
Nah, it will, it definitely will drop, I'm sure of it. :D

aiyo no la, its the higher ISO performance. its able to perform well at iso 3200. but then again, i ask myself: "do i really need it??".

now im thinking hard. real hard. do i need all those things like:
1) iso 3200
2) HD video
3) better color metering

gee...i love the size of the 550D, but i know when we remove all the gimmicks and decors, its not on par with the 50D when we are talking abt the basics of a camera. i understand that the xxxD series respond slower etc.

oh well...a more sensible upgrade wld be to the 60D.
5d mkII for you sir? :D

You didnt get my point that a higher Mp would attribute to poorer ISO control , which would defeat your purpose wouldnt it?

nah. im about to ORD and start uni. i want a cam + set up that can last me til i graduate, but definitely one which fits my budget nicely and 550D if priced like the 500D...will fit it nicely with battery grip plus spare batts. oh well...still in a dilemma.

this isn't exactly true. i've seen samples of the 550D at high ISOs and they are way better than 50D.

Auden have you read this link?

Sigh this is why i’m praying for a miracle in the 60D.

oh well. i feel for the professionals. im not one, so detailed tests dun bother me. if i try to shoot, it feels good, produces images the way i like it...can already. noise dun really bother me a lot cuz i print at most 4R. haha! but then again, this will leave us wondering "WHAT IS CANON THINKING?". =( Nikon cameras are better i guess. but they aren't winning people over because their lenses aren't as welcoming as Canon's.

Yes, i don’t usually print bigger than 8R, but the noise is of great concern to me because i’m moving towards available light shooting. :(

It’s sad to see that canon isn’t listening to photographers, while nikon is. Actually Canon is losing quite a bit of market share, not at our level but at the professional level who have more stringent demands.

Nikon’s new lens announcements have taken away some of Canon’s traditional lens advantage. And the D3s is the undisputed low light king. The DP review notes that D3s at ISO 1600 is as good as 1D Mk4 at ISO 100! :O

I have too much in canon to move, so i’m just holding out for the 60D miracle. The 550 is OK, but not wholly what i’m looking for. It’s a better sensor than the 50D/500D’s sensor yes, but it’s hardly a significant low light improvement (just 1 stop more usuability) as of yet. :(

oh man. well...all companies haf their ups and downs...nobody is good forever. nikon used to be inferior to canon, while canon took the lead in going full frame. so yeah, just hold on. no worries. both are great. luckily for me...my ideal set up is nothing much. 1 body + 17-40 + 50mm + 70-200 (which i no money to buy)....lol....so jumping ship isn't as painful.

don't worry about miracles. Canon will somehow wake up from their slumber. when money rolls in slowly for them, they will sure do something about it. for now, i decided to hold on to my 50D. karel donk says 50D produces crap images. oh man, so hurting. =( yeah i think its not very good cuz of the noise...but still, if the olden days photographers can do it without all these high ISO sensitivity im sure we wun hurt without those gimmicks today's cameras have to offer. anyway, if u are moving towards available light photography...FF is the way to go for u. 550D looks good for lowlight too, but dunno if its enough. according to some reviews i read, the 550D's iso performance is like that of the 5D classic or better. so...is that impressive?

Yea i read that too. It’s comparing the 550’s base ISO thou. Base ISO impressive is understandable due to the sensor, but like both of us mentioned, the higher ISOs are quite important too. I’ll definitely be interested in reviews on the 550 in the meantime while waiting for the 60D.

500D same sensor as 50D, so i’m equally sad :(

This picture is just humorous thou. :) It’s from Fake Chuck Westfall btw.

‘chuck westfall’ is having an MSN conversation with Mr Maeda, Canon Inc JP’s CEO. I certainly hope anything like this thinking isn’t true!

oooooooh all's not looking too well for canon. im looking at my 50D now...shld i sell it tmr den wait for 550D + BG or keep it? 550D has 18 MP for heaven's sake....but the ISO goes up to 6400. 50D's at best only at 1600...and while it doesnt usually bother me, when i go to dark streets like clarkquay, it bothers me big time. i can only see my subject and the backgrd is black.

THe 500D and likely the 550D has only 3.x fps, noisier shutter, and bad AF servo if the subject is running towards you (it lags a little behind). So these things irritate me to no end. I think these things are ok on the 50D, so that’s something for you to consider.

If I were in your shoes, I would wait, and tolerate the current ISO performance. But then again I acknowledge that I shoot at f2.8, meaning for the same exposure I can manage the usable ISO1600 while your 50D needs to use 3200 at f4.

Tough call mate. I would still wait thou.

Anyway, 550D is already selling in JB. didn't ask the price though.

lol, well...i think i will just let it be. i guess im gonna stick with my trusty 50D for years to come. after all its still pretty new at abt 7 mths. too early to replace it i guess. im just looking for a steady and tough camera to last me the nxt 3+ years in uni. dun think i wld haf enuff money to spend on cameras when i leave the army and start sch. haha! yeah im using the 17-40f/4L so...the higher ISO capabilities wld be of great help to me during streets especially. indoors got flash, so its ok. i'll most probably be looking into a good prime + batt grip since i've decided to stick with 50D.

WHAT?!
If you’re going NUS maybe we can meet up! I’m studying in NUS now, part time freelance graphic design and looking to break into photography.

Anyway, yea i’m also looking into good primes. Specifically the 85mm f1.8 for portraiture.

nah, its either NTU or SIM-RMIT for me. im contemplating between getting the 50 f/1.4 (again) or 85 f/1.8 (useful for street too)...btw i already got the 50 f/1.8II. i like 50mm on the crop. nv tried 85mm lol. the lens im waiting for is the 50 f/1.4 II. i hope the price doesnt change. haha!

I just wonder is the 550D's iso 1600 really (100%) better then 50D's?

The 550D sensor is almost exactly identical to the 7D, with the output channels reduced to 4, instead of 8. This would reduce the read out speed but probably nothing else, thus giving you only 3.7fps.

For those of you wondering what the 550D's high iso will be like, take a look at the 7D reviews. I think the 550D will be at least as good but probably better, because the newer camera almost always have a better ISO performance due to the extra time available to fine tune it. Eg, the 500D had better sharpness and details when compared to the 50D in numerous reviews including the dpreview. In several reviews, the 7D was already neck to neck with the D300s. I expect the 550D to give the D90 and D5000 a very good run for their money at high ISO, while providing a 18mpx resolution.

As for talks of Canon losing market share to Nikon, perhaps at very specific market segment. For the entire dSLR market, it is safe to say that Nikon only manages to snatch that lead for a very short period of time, in 2007 I think. Before that and after that, it is Canon all the way. Last year, Nikon suffered one of the worst performance against Canon in Japan snatching only 28% vs Canon's 37.9% market share in Japan.. source: bcnranking.jp

I really hope Nikon would buck up and release something breathtaking, like the D300 did in 2007, in the near future. Then the prosumer dSLR market will really be interesting... You see, they have been rehashing the same sensor for 3 years now, it is only natural the competitor makes some breakthrough in sensor technology.

Canon is loosing market share in the low light shooters market segment.

The entry segment is one they’re relatively safe. It’s the prosumer/events/wedding photographers section that they’re loosing share because of their constant insistence more MP is better.

Canon has ALWAYS been bigger than nikon in share and company size. A better comparison would be to compare share relative from year on year.

Well, the report from the Nikon fella at PMA did say somehting like "we will surprise the consumer/market with a new Prosumer DSLR".. not exact word but something along that line.... so let wait and see what surprises they have install for us.....
