whats with canon? why are they doing this? they are a giant corporation, they must have their reasons for doing so? anyway i wld go FF anytime. if 7D blows u away, FF will take you outer space. peering inside the 5D2 was like looking into a room for the first time.
However, I think the picture will not be complete without the 2009 figure. When the 2009 figure is out, and if you look at the latest 3 years (2007-2009), I suspect you will see that Canon is losing market share, Nikon is losing market share and Sony may gain market share if the trend of 2007-2008 continues.
As for the 7D/550D sensor, the fact that a 18mpx sensor can match the DRange and ISO performance of much lower density sensors is evident enough the amount of R&D achievements made on that sensor. I do not own the 7D nor the 550D (yet) but personally, I am truly impressed.
Now what if Canon keeps mpx low?
In terms of noise, even with a 18mpx sensor, I believe by downscaling an 18mpx image to 12mpx, you will reduce noise. Will this down scaling produce an image less noisy than if the sensor is originally 12mpx? I don't know.
In terms of DRange, color, etc...? Comparing the D3s vs D3x which likely use very similar sensor technology but the D3x has double the pixel count. In terms of DRange...
http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/en...287|0/(onglet)/0/(brand)/Nikon/(brand2)/Nikon
It seems like the D3x has better Drange than the D3s
D3s (12mpx) - 12EV
D3x (24mpx) - 13.4EV
So packing 2x as much pixel into a camera can actually result in better DRange? hmmm...
Haha i think trying to cash in on people who cannot wait. That’s like D90, 50D price alr.yeah... very expensive!!
Hey yea, its much safer to shop at dedicated camera shops.Hello there, new to the community, glad I found this site.
Also, fairly new to Singapore, perhaps I'm just being naive, but I am in the market for a new digicam (not an expert by any means) -- just looking for a major upgrade from the adequate Exilim I purchased many years ago from Hong Kong.
After doing some initial research, I narrowed my choices down to the Nikon D5000 and the Canon 500D (simply because the video function is important to me for capturing videos of my kids). After handling both cameras, and weighing the pros/cons, I was leaning on purchasing the 500D (in the end the picture quality seemed more vibrant with the Canon). So I was just about to purchase the 500D (this was yesterday) when my gut told me to sleep on it.
Duh! I'm glad I waited -- as I had no idea that the 550D was coming out. I only found out because I was checking on the internet for comparison pricing when the 550D starting popping up.
But get this, when I asked the salesperson if there were any newer models slated to come out -- he was like, "not for many months" or if there was any price reduction coming in the near future and he was like "not at all, already very low" -- I mean this is a major electronics shop (I don't want to name it just yet -- don't know if its against the rules) but this was a dedicated camera salesperson who must have known that the 550D was literally just around the corner, meaning:
1) He should have told me that the 550D was slated to come out in a few days
2) Even if I'm not interested in upgrading, its a reasonable expectation that the price of the 500D may come down (perhaps not right away, but fairly shortly).
The guy just lied straight to my face! Well, it goes without saying that they won't be getting my business, but am I just being naive here? Should I know each and every model that's coming out? The 550D is literally coming out in a few days if not being sold by some stores already!
Just venting a little sorry.
Hey yea, its much safer to shop at dedicated camera shops.
I was at John 3 yesterday. Saw the salespeople tell 2 people separately that the 550D was coming out. One still decided to jump for the 550D, the other decided to wait. This sorta thing is up to the buyer to decide, but if the buyer ask, the salesperson should tell the truth.
I think its hard to say that salesperson, as a dedicated camera salesperson, wouldnt know about the 550D. If he doesnt, lets just say hes not quite knowing much about his field doesnt he? Would you trust such a shop?
See what is their freebies lor... last time the add $50 buy 50mm F1.8 is not bad leh, + free batteries.No. I won’t recommend any particular shop as they all vary in terms of service and price.
Generally John 3 and cathay are known for better service. Their people will talk to u and tell u more on what to do etc. But then they are also known to have slightly higher prices on some stuff. SLR and Alan for example have slightly better prices.
I’ll say check all, in terms of prices, and then you can decide.
BTW the 550D is not in shops yet. It will be launched next week at the IT fair. (According to ST ad). BUT DON’T BUY from IT fair. That’s usually the RRP, not the street price from dedicated camera shops. The freebies are hardly worth it.
Oh yea thats the purchase with purchase thing. Heard that was quite good. But only good if you purchased form Canon at Vivo using the loyalty program.See what is their freebies lor... last time the add $50 buy 50mm F1.8 is not bad leh, + free batteries.
I’m not sure… I don’t think $1.7 is the price. I’ll say DD is charging higher because its the its an imported set, and currently overseas prices are high.I am a member at Challenger, and I figure I'd get at least a slight discount -- though that 1,700+ price tag was about 200 dollars higher than what I thought... in a dilemma about the 500D v 550D
