one day, it will be gigapixels liao.. a matter of time only :) and memory cards will come in terabytes :) the technology is available, only problem is the cost of bringing it to market.. how many pple will be willing to pay $.5mil for a 1gigapixel camera? :bsmilie: just imagine it was only 2~3yrs ago when the top of the line cameras only had 4mp.. so if mp increases 1.5x every year, we should see 1gp economically available in top the line cameras in about 10yrs time :)

Wow gigapixels  !!! Interestingly, this pixel count jump thingy appears to be induced more by competition rather than natural "evolvement". I hope Canon didn't keep the technology away from us so as to milk the market. If this is so ... Sony and Nikon please launch new dslr with 16.7 mega pixels along with other goodies soon !!! lol

No spot metering. No auto iso. Blah, blah, blah... these things don't bother me.

I love the Precision AF sensor now on the 400D.

But my biggest concern: 2.5" LCD may drain the battery quickly. As it is, the NB-2LH has low capacity. I will wait for the next generation (450D???) when they turn the LCD into OLED:

Low power consumption. Even better viewing angles. :D

but of course, they have to give in to market demand. look how much share the sony has taken already - 26%... canon drop almost 20% in sales in july.

That's just a spike. Companies should be more interested in sustained sales. The A100 was introduced in July with a massive spike, but that interest waned very quickly as well. Look at the bigger picture here:

But, it's great that we now have a 3 way fight between Canon, Nikon and Sony. Better cameras at lower prices. :vhappy: :vhappy: :vhappy:

400d is the same size as 350d. very uncomfortable to hold unless witrh grip
dont forget it does not use bp511 batteries. if you already have eos dslr using bp511 then if u want a second body then get another that uses the same bp511 battery. unless u intend to start and stay with the 350d battery all the way

Pl admit the fact that what ever the models, 3 digits is a class lower than the 2 digits model. The Single Digit still reign supreme, even with the older model.
The Pro 1 is a special class altogether ... superb

newbie here...
2 questions.

1) Viewfinder : Eye-level pentaprism and Eye-level pentamirror
what is the difference

2) what is spot metering?

q1. no realworld difference
q2. to meter for only a small spot (3%) of the viewable screen

Aiyah...

just get a Nikon lah...

haha

seriously though, why upgrade if the current camera serves u well?

Are you sure the specs are similar? If you're going for the megapixel alone, then it's not a fare comparison after all. Newer model's resolution always goes up, never down.

Here are the difference:

  1. ISO
  2. Viewfinder. This is already a major difference. Look through the 30D and 350D and you'll know why.
  3. Spot metering.
  4. Burst shots.
  5. Materials used to make both cams are definitely different. If not there won't be so much different in price.

Different price class... similar specs. ;p

See this link for comparision of specs

 Yeah MP count not important...

Resale price also important. Now i see lots of people dumping their 350Ds

If i have a 350d i will not upgrade to 400d, not much different... size the same except only sensor dust removal thing, 8 to 10 megapixel :thumbsd:

I more or less make up my mind to upgrade my 350D to 30D probably around the end of this year but now following the launch of 400D I am not too sure liaoz..

Main reason for me to go for 30D, ranked according to preference:
1) 9 point AF, help shooting with prime lens @ shallow DOF
2) faster and more accurate focusing in low light
3) Bigger 2.5" LCD screen
4) Variable ISO step up selection
5) Bigger & brighter viewfinder
6) 2nd wheel helps handling
7) Max shutter speed of 1/8000s (can run out of 1/4000s using fast prime under daylight at times)
8) Kelvin scale selection of colour temp.

Now with 400D covering my top 3 priorities, & with an anti-dust + 10mp bait, I am not so sure liaoz.. have to see the price difference between 400D & 30D b4 deciding.

Harder to justify the extra cost after seeing the specs of 400D.. :(

i am just considering to get a 350D when canon announced the 400D. the only thing that interest me from the 400D is only the dust removal system. however this is the first time canon introduce this technology so consumers won't be too sure how effective this thing is.

should i stick to my choice of a 350D or just get 400D?

blur like mad. lol.

Between the 350D and 400D, there is no contest: 400D.

One very BIG and simple reason: high precision AF. No point in having an 50 f/1.8 lens and not being able to use it properly because of the poor AF accuracy on the 350D. Seriously. Personal experience with fast lenses.

One other thing: price should be below $1500.

IIRC 400D cost 799USD without the kit lens. yup it has almost everything 30D has. except the 2nd wheel and most importantly the dedicated monochrome LCD display. i personally find that being VERY important. colour LCD waste batt only.

hmm AF point is important. just read about it. you are right!

prime lens IMO going to be my main lens. esp the 50mm 1.8...

well if it is below 1500 i sure i can wait for it. mid sep?
