Today was my first time seeing fireworks so close (compared to all those years watching from my house). It's also my first time taking fireworks photos. Quite expected, I was disappointed with my shots. Here they are:

http://homepage.mac.com/lundywong/DriftingThoughts/PhotoAlbum142.html

I used ISO 100, F8, mostly 2 - 3 secs for shutter speed and WB set to Incandescent. My findings and recommendations are as follows:

a) Maybe next time should use ISO 64 for shutter speeds at 4 sec.
b) Our spot on the esplanade bridge is a little too distant away from the fireworks. Had to use zoom. Perhaps we should scout for a close spot. Maybe the other end of the sheares bridge?
c) May need to buy a raincoat, so don't have to carry a cumbersome long umbrella.
d) Set to 5MP instead of 8MP. Cos it takes extra time for the data transfer @2MB per sec. I could use the extra time to take more shots to increase chances of a nice pix.

sorry if my question sound silly...

Wouldnt 4 secs shutter speed be too long for the fireworks? I mean the fireworks is so fast that, it is a fast motion for 4 second, wouldnt it make the picture looks blur?

I am a sony fans too, had own 717, V1 and W1....

lao eh... compared to anyone of u... mine all like crap sia...

if your tripod is sturdy enough, 4sec will not make the picture blur... it will only make your picture abit over expose if you set it for longer duration.

I used f8 with 8secs, so a bit blur and over exposed, next time will try f8 with 4 or 5 secs.

Some of my shots were taken in 3 secs. So I guess adjusting the shutter to 4 secs would make the light trail longer.

Yes, the fireworks are "fast" but we need to capture its path of motion. If appears to be nice when we see it in our eyes. But a photo is still and it needs to convey the 'story'. if the shutter is too fast, you will only see the 'frozen' effect with with the fireworks in light dots instead of long trails. Then again it depends on the effects you wish to acheive.

shutter speed dun make ur photo blur if the camera is mounted on a good tripod.

I tried some of the combinations with different shutter speed and aperture. My conclusion, f8 with shutter speed 2.5s to 4s are the best. greater than 4s overexposed. less than 2.5 sec can only capture dot dot on the sky.

to avoid blur image, use manual focus focus on the ships

I would suggest that all meet at the same time so as not to allow ....
