this is cool man, i think nikon should employ you to be their technician...

No.. it's the 1m mark. The lens can focus down to 0.5m, but mine got stuck when it reaches 1m.

Oops, I thought you're referring to the clearance :embrass:

Thanks for yhe infor hope mine buy from friends is ok

Wow.

CSI of ClubSnap

I hope that my 18-200VR don't come to this stage.
Thanks for the "lab report".

He's an engineer... if nikon employs him to be a tech, i think he won't even consider the offer unless the pay is attractive.. ;p

RIP..

No, it's not going to rest in peace with me around.. The lens still works...except 1) no VR, 2) beyond 150mm zoom because the zoom encoder contacts are broken, the cpu could not know what the focal length it's zoom to, so the AF could not lock.. Otherwise, the optics and the aperture control are still ok. ;p Will see what NSC can do.

"Hi sir, we will be giving you a brand new piece of the same lens, as well as a spot at NSC developing team, what say you?" :bsmilie:

jokes aside, i think you've provided a very useful insight to all fellow 18-200mm VR users.

this is what forums are about! woohoo!

The clearance? I think it's only about 0.5mm or maybe less.. which is why they should taper the edges so there's more clearance over the edge of the flex.

Woh!! Just spotted another potential failure mode.. the VR flex actually crosses one of the optical rail!! I wonder if they could dress the VR flex at a less exciting portion of that tube where there is less mechanical movement. ;p

its designed to fail.. so they can make more :bheart:

I think it seems more like a rushed design, maybe they pushed the product out before the ALT was completed. ;p This lens was one of the earlier versions, should be either first or second MiJ batch. So for all you know, they might have fixed the defects in later batches. I don't believe Nikon engineers are that bad. Japanese engineers are usually very careful, which is why I'm quite puzzled when I saw the potential failure modes.

you dismantle until like that, thought you've written it off...but it's still working, u r good !

Is this lens made in Japan or Thailand?

Kind of disappointment plus scary. Imagine if all the new zoom lens that made around the same time, applies the same design.... It could mean thousands of dollars down the drain. There's perhaps nothing can a service centre could do beside just do a parts replacement. The problem will never go away if the design dun change. The failure will still be the same, the MTBF will still remain. This is Engineering.

Is this len made in Thailand? this is problem with out source our product to get cheaper price. shame on nikon. good job of csi isisaxon.

Thanks isisaxon for the report ! So sorry about your lens. I just got my 18-200 VR, I will be very careful when I zoom now.

As this is an all-in-one lens, chances are those who bought this lens would be using it as their main lens and so, during the warranty period, there would be quite a number of failures and so, Nikon got to bear the cost of these repair. And repair would gobble up a big chunk of their profits from this product. That is why a good design is essential. But it has got to be a balance between a Kiasu one and a flimsy one.

Hey, hey, dun worry too much la.

1 You have got 1 year warranty.
2 Due to continuous improvement on their product and getting feedback from their service centres, it is unlikely you would face with the same problem.

These days, if you buy something from reputable companies, chances are that you seldom get to repair during warranty.

The bad news is that you dun get to repair too, once out of warranty.

This is the MiJ version.. I think should be first or second batch. ;p

Good insight into this lens.
Mine is at NSC for a SWM replacement. I wonder if they will rectify it while it's there.
