really interesting post:bsmilie:

Are the later 18-200 made in China or Thailand?

BTW whether China or Thailand AFAIK the lenses are not out sourced, they are made in Nikon factory in those locations. AFAIK the only out sourced lens is that AiS 35-70mm f/3.5-4.5 made by Cosina. And the only our sourced cameras (SLR) are the FM10 and FE10.

Correct me if I am wrong.

I'm glad my 18-200VR is still functioning.. anyway, lsisaxon, your lens stripping is amazing!!! ;)

the only problem this lens gives me is when I take a shot with the built-in flash on my D70, it cast a black shadow on the base of my photo.. as an amateur, I reckon should be the wide-angle that causes this problem?

cheers!

Hi, Brotehr, admire your courage.(Dare to strip 18-200 VR, almost naked:bigeyes:)

Really appreciate your sharing.Thanks.( I swear I will treat my 18-200VR well.:)

No, it's because the pop up flash is too low and the diameter of the lens is too big. Using an SB-400, SB-600, SB-800 or SB-900 would solve this problem. ;p

you dismantle until like that, thought you've written it off...but it's still working, u r good !

If you send it in to NSC, they would have to strip down to this level also and even more to access the VR board. You just need to know what you strip last and put those back first. Army did a good job in teaching how to lay out the parts when you strip a weapon. Adopt the same procedure and you won't go wrong. ;p

Wow this is just great! Just last week i sent my 18-200VR back to NSC for the exact same reason. It just wouldn't focus anything out of 1m and luckily i still had warranty covered for my lens. Should be getting it back real soon but thanks alot for the great insight of the lens. Wonder will they call back their lens due to this reason.

Hmm.. So I should feel lucky that mine is already more than 2.5 yrs old and I have used this lens extensively before this problem surfaced. ;p

Hmmm... wonder how much NSC will chop us for this if its out of warranty....

As an owner of a Made in Thailand GREY copy, I almost choked  while reading this thread..

Nevertheless, thanks lsisaxon for the thorough look into a 18-200 VR's insides, very insightful

Dun worry about it.. I shot several thousand shots with this lens, zoomed in and out dunno how many times, probably averaging 1-2 zooms per shot and it lasted well after the warranty has expired.. Just that after opening up, I find that there are definitely some room for improvements...

So just as a precaution, don't turn the zoom ring too quickly when you zoom. That's going to put a lot more stress on the VR flex if the MiT copy is of the same design..

Hey, hey, dun worry too much la.

1 You have got 1 year warranty.
2 Due to continuous improvement on their product and getting feedback from their service centres, it is unlikely you would face with the same problem.

These days, if you buy something from reputable companies, chances are that you seldom get to repair during warranty.

Ok .... however the thing is that I got it from a member here, means 2nd hand

No, it's not going to rest in peace with me around.. The lens still works...except 1) no VR, 2) beyond 150mm zoom because the zoom encoder contacts are broken, the cpu could not know what the focal length it's zoom to, so the AF could not lock.. Otherwise, the optics and the aperture control are still ok. ;p Will see what NSC can do.
they can congratulate you for designing a Nikkor AFS 18-150 DX lens with no VR... and of course, you should charge them for the design ;p

I think they don't lose much with a 18-135 which cost much less. ;p hahaha..

I must say I admire your courage. Good job !!!

Nice stripping!! power!!!

Did Nikon reply with ur findings ?

Just got back my 1yr + 1mth old lens from NSC. Same failure so they replaced the SWM unit. Luckily the didn't charge me anything.:) Looks like we have to be gentler with this lens.

Did Nikon reply with ur findings ?

They fixed it. Plus their diagnostic tools revealed the SWM was dying also. I paid for the repair because it was already out of warranty. The charges were reasonable.

Just read this thread with interest. Kudos to Isisaxon for the wonderful insights and baring of the design flaws in the lense design.
Frankly, based on what you said, I'd prob dump some cash to invest in this lens!

Also kudos to NSC for repairing the lense with reasonable rates. My faith in Nikon has improved greatly!
