Zeiss Lens on EOS

Had so many new lenses recently that I just don't know which lens to try. So finally I mounted and glued the Zeiss 50mm to my camera today to really run through it.
Well, as I've mentioned earlier, the don't find the Zeiss 50mm impressive compared to the Canon. 50mm is a very simple focal length to make and most brands have very good 50mm lenses in their lineup. But once u go below the 50mm standard focal length to the wide angle department, this is where the Zeiss really stands out distinctively over the Canon. The Zeiss 28mm and 21mm simply beat Canon without sweat. I won't even be bothered to run comparison tests between them at these focal length!

Post a couple more blind tests weekh, then we can all make up our minds about which lens we like w/o having the 'branding' affecting our decision! bjorke
Maybe the dim view
in budget digislr is from cost cutting by the manufacturer. By the way this is also done for some budget film slrs.
The dim view is caused by a small set of mirrors. Instead of a proper pentaprism, you get a set of mirrors to reflect the image. The mirrors are no match for a pentaprism.
But in top end digi slrs and film slrs, they still use a proper pentaprism.
These are usually the top end ones that do not incorporate a pop up flash on the body.
Maybe the dim view

these kids really almost take away all the time i have... no time for other subjects so gotto aim the camera at them.. anytime anywhere...
but not easy lah.. cos they won't take your command to pose...

Canon haven't put split-prism screens in their cameras in age, if the AF is good the designers ask why you would need it? They are right in their way, but only through their own arrogance at thinking that the AF will focus on what *I* want :nono: Ah well. New cameras are good for what they are, would you want to add another 500SGD for a manual-focus-friendly VF when you've already paid for AF?

For me, pentaprism and optical viewfinder is a must.
Canon SLRs do not have the brightest viewfinder. But passable.
The brightest are : Hasselbald, Minolta (acutematte screens), Leica R.
LCD screen as viewfinder (EVF) inside the camera is no fun to me.
LCD screen as viewfinder outside the camera is OK for times I need to use it, say in overhead shots.
I don't think it will cost Sing$500 more to provide simple pentaprism.
Maybe only $50 more but as I said elsewhere, for entry level digislrs, buyers are price sensitive. So Canon cut costs to bare bones to compete.
Whole idea is to bring newbies into the Canon system.
For top guns like 1Ds MkII, I don't think pros will tolerate dim viewfinders or worse, EVF inside the camera, at the price they pay.

Enjoyed using the CZ 50 even though it lacks the automation. Reminds me of the days when I was using the rangefinder. Can't wait to receive my split focusing screen for more precise focusing.
And also can't wait for a full frame cam to be as light and small like the 350D !!!

i was reading this thread the other day on the Leica list - pple were giving the Pentax DSLRs ( specifically the *istD i think) for having a bright viewfinder, as bright as what a R8 / R9 will give! u might wanna check it out
the pentax DSLRs supposedly all have real pentaprisms coupled with bright viewfinders....
Was told that the adapter price is going up soon. So for those who wanna try the Zeiss lenses, better hurry!
And to answer some of the common questions that I receive, u can only use the Zeiss Contax/Yashica SLR manual lenses with the adapter. Contax G lenses cannot be used!!!
- 28mm f2.8 is about $300 - $400 and is one of the best investment u can have on Zeiss.
- 50mm f1.7 is the cheapest! About $70-$80 from Ebay!!! And it is rated better than the f1.4!
- 50mm f1.4 is about as good as the Canon 50mm f1.4
- 85 f1.4 not as sharp as the Canon but many people find portraits taken with it looks fantastic.
- 21mm f2.8 highly sought after lens!!!! Grab it if u can find one!
- 28-85mm very good focal range and is better than the EF 24-70L and cheaper!!!

Absolutely does G 28/2.8,45/2,90/2.8 better than any contax Zeiss SLR manual or N AF lens??
And how about N series 24-85mm/3.5-4.5?better or worse than MM 28-85/3.3-4??
