I hate people who say that we should think of the starving people in Africa when we waste food. Perhaps they should start donating some food to the Africans first. The fact that they are eating food means that they are depriving the Africans of food. They could have donated the food to the Africans, but they chose to have it for themselves. Are they not selfish then?

I think you completely don't understand it why some people say this, I did too when I was young, but what they mean is that we should appreciate what we have or get and not take things for granted, while others don't have the same food as us here. By doing so, it makes us think twice before throwing away food........(unless it was given to you and it is too much)

Let's assume 40,000 volunteers, across 12 days, 3 meals a day, on a $5.5mil budget, it works out to $3.81/meal.
Even if it was incl. rehearsals for abt 15 days, 3 meals a day, on a $5.5mil budget, still works out to $3.05/meal.

Someone please explain how that picture equals either figure? I could get that same "tapao" at a hawker centre for $3.00 or less. And that's a hawker who does not enjoy the same economies of scale as SFI, who would be able to drive their costs down a lot more.

Does make you think again, doesn't it? How many of you have heard your family or friends say,'Economy good meh? I everyday see this sector got growth, that company big profits. Nice to hear, but where's the money? I don't see it, do you?'

Rehearsal and trials started way back in May....not just this few days that you see.

i had a discussion with my buddy, he tried explaining why the budget over shot by so much in a logical manner, eg IT infra-structure, YOG village, getting the transport, food etc. it is not easy to estimate a budget for such a big event.

but my question, since they have many (as in 45x) in budgeting NDP, F1 other experience in org summit (cant remember what it was), olympic games by other countries, cant be our scholars under-estimate by sooooo muchhhhh mah.:bsmilie::bsmilie:

This is the tactics... if you tell the government that it is going to cost $400mil right from the start, you think they will approve? Giving a small and logical budget to kick start the event, then slowly upscale it....by then, with so much money already spent, cannot abandon already right? Then bring the "Parang" to chop!

Guys, don't forget, most of the volunteers are "volunteered". As in like, ok this school and that school, you will be doing the xxx performance. Tell your volunteers to report in ......

In SG most Volunteers = Arrowed.

Except for Volunteers to be a grassroot leaders. Its different. You got many many benefits...:bsmilie:

That aside, please dont bring up all those " African" arguments. IMO if you wanna use that to argue a point, make sure you never complain about dirty toilets, bad jobs, unfair treatment, prejudice, unaffordable housing and everything under the sun.

Simply because no matter what aspect you are complaining about, the Africans are definitely worse off than you.

I guess we can only be thankful that standards are improved drastically immediately after this outcry. It shows that someone up there is listening.

They saw a problem, investigated, improved the situation as soon as they could :thumbsup:

Bad way to start, but at least we are seeing improvements, which people seem to disregard.

Yeah, the " African" arguments doesn't make sense to me. It's not that our country can't afford the expenses for the decent meals for our volunteers.

And, someone brought up the topic of foreigners spending $3000 air tickets to come here to volunteer. I guess they must be rich enough to do so; And they don't simply come here to volunteer(probably treating it as a journey to a foreign country as well), and if they care to, I believe there is no lack of such works at their own countries. Why waste so much money?

It will make more sense if they donate the expenses to the Africans. :think:

Lousy food is lousy food. There is no excuse.

Scholars mah... all book knowledge and no real experience. All talk no action. Come to action all blur like sotong.

Basic budgeting also dunno. Over budget by 50% in private sector will get fired already. This is one is overshot the budget by 4x, and these idiots will get a pat on the back and told "well done". :bigeyes:

Depends on point of view. To someone from another place where they are destitute, this is good food.
In our time, we normally don't complain about such things.
But Gen Y is a bit more spoiled. Maids serve them at home, aircon bedrooms, Parents fetch in cars to school, go to Europe for school holidays, expect parents to buy them a house when they grow up ( and car as well)....
So a little insignificant thing like less delicious packet food - make a big fuss on-line...

Yup... I would like to see those who use the "african" argument, to pay 10 cents and go pang sai in a hole in the ground... rather than a modern toilet. Most people in africa do their business in the bushes leh... got hole and a wooden shed very good already leh.

The point is not about the quality of food. It is about the quality of food for the price the taxpayers paid. Which someone above works out to be around $3 a pack. We are talking about accountability here.

In army, I heard my officer said the army pay $5 for 1 packet of food when we were out in the field for training.

If this is true, then $3 is really peanut. Haven't taken into account of the cost of logistic that involves in the transfer of food. :sweat:

and do u know foreign students can apply for scholarship and local need to borrow $ from loansharks to pay for school fees in order to get a job, which in turns make him pay his debts and pay tax and gst...

the foreign student needs to work here for 3/5 years or so... no debts...


we, local, work here for life, get ....??

U don't want the foreign visitors to faint from lack of nutritional food while competing.
