Be thankful for the food and drinks you get. The poor construction workers that build our flats gets worst then this. If you volunteer, don't expect too much. If you volunteer, don't complain. If you expect to be treated as King and queen, don't volunteer.
I have met people whom I work in my venue that pay $3000 air ticket to come to Singapore, pay their own hotel to volunteer in Singapore. When I ask them about the food...their reply was.."Be thankful for food." They are not paid a single cents, took leave from their work and travel half the world to come and volunteer. That is a real volunteer.
Nope I don't think that should be the idea. I think that if you want to give food/money, then it better be decent. It's like how you shouldn't just give those buskers 5 cents just because they are taking up unnecessary space in your wallet, you're just insulting them. If you don't plan on providing decent food / have double standards and give great food to the athletes and crappy food to the volunteers, then don't give the volunteers anything at all, and tell them beforehand to bring their own money for food. I'd much rather be a volunteer and expect nothing at all than volunteer and be treated like dung.
And we should not compare ourselves with foreign construction workers. We are citizens of a first world country, you can't say that since people in Africa don't even have half as much as the portion of the food to eat, we should be happy we have food. Don't compare apples to oranges. I hate people who say that we should think of the starving people in Africa when we waste food. Perhaps they should start donating some food to the Africans first. The fact that they are eating food means that they are depriving the Africans of food. They could have donated the food to the Africans, but they chose to have it for themselves. Are they not selfish then?
