eh hello, non-PR also got to pay tax lah ... and PR don't get RED passport, as they are still citizen in their home country, so still hold their country's passport.

Got my PR very shortly after I applied for employment pass - in fact, during the interview for the employment pass, the officer asked me if I interested to become PR. So fill in the form there and then, and voila, 2 months later become PR.

And just last month, SIR sent me form ask me if I want to become Singapore Citizen or not ...

hehehe. i never got that form and don't wish to get it anyway! being a PR is good enough as it still gives me flexibility to enjoy the best of both worlds.

hmmm... got my PR November 2001 so prob about 1.5 yrs.

And i have to agree with munfai that being a PR is good enough, cos the only extra benefit I get from being a citizen is the ability to vote ... oh and those ERS, EPS, NSS shares thingie, but thats not a big financial incentive.

If SIR/ICA give me 50% tax break as citizen, I will be the first to submit my citizenship papers liao ... ;p :bsmilie:

Thanks to all you peeps who participated in this thread.

This PR really helps me as I have two kids who are in Primary 1 and kindergarten and somehow saves me a bit plus having a CPF really a great savings for me :gbounce: ...unlike before I got my PR, it really drains all my pocket :cry: .

word of advice on CPF - make sure that your employer follows the guidelines on the PR deduction for CPF - as a new PR, you don't have to deduct the full amount (20%) for CPF, there is a schedule to slowly increase CPF contributions.

However, if your employer tells you that you HAVE to deduct FULL CPF contributions, then you need to apply to CPF to have them RECOGNISE and ACKNOWLEDGE that you are contributing the FULL MANDATORY amount. Otherwise, IRAS will TAX you based on the PR contributing schedule (eg, they only recognise a PORTION of the CPF deduction as MANDATORY contribution, the rest being VOLUNTARY and TAXABLE) - I found this out the hard way :cry: and end up paying a LOT more tax than necessary ... :cry: :cry:

Me hav to wait till next yr to apply for citizenship...

Well, not every country is as fortunate...
With my country passport, we have to go through lotsa trouble & interrogation just to apply visa to some countries. When we travel, we're always da one who got suspicious stare at da checkpoint...

btw, for those of you PRs who intend to buy property here, note that there are some restrictions as well. for example, my wife and I don't qualify to purchase an exec apartment because I'm not a citizen.

actually, you cannot buy a NEW HDB flat or Exec Condo/Apt but you can buy off the resale market eg. after 5 yrs.
