Just chipping in a bit...
I tried and compared the Thumbs-Up with the Hand Grip HG-XPro1 and IMOH:
Pros
(Thumbs-Up)
- Stylo-milo like Leica
- Can mount flash on hotshoe
- Slightly heighten flash above the camera.
- Great for those who hold your cam in a certain way
- Compact
- Light weight vs Hand Grip HG-XPro1
- Protects lcd and buttons when laying lens pointing up as it provides a certain level of clearance.
- Does not hinder removal of battery/SD card.
- Also work as a bottle opener!
- Comes with a green jade with red treads dangling ling-ling-long-long and a nice cool box.
(Hand Grip HG-XPro1)
- Firm solid feel. Does not jitter like some loosen parts.
- Protect the base of camera.
- Low profile and will not 'poke' into your chest if you sling your camera over your neck.
- Does not block thumb movement.
- Allow mounted flash to be more compact and closer to the camera body.
- Added weight gives more balance to the camera.
- Original high quality accessory from Fujifilm.
Cons
(Thumbs-Up)
- It's jittery. Doesn't feel well-mounted.
- Inhibit my thumb movements
- Costly for a silly piece of painted brass.
- Pokes my chest (and i'm not aroused!)
- Feels 'cheap' like the paint will peel (personal opinion. Definitely not very well-machined on the edges. Either that the paint finish is blotchy).
- Some model comes without the coldshoe so please take note.
- Dun understand the silly cheap jade with red treads dangling ling-ling-long-long that comes along with it.
(Hand Grip HG-XPro1)
- Equally expensive for a silly piece with rubber and some metal (but at least more material than Thumbs-Up!!!)
- Causes the hood or lens to tilt down 'hitting' the table.
- Inhibits removal of battery/SD.
- Heavier than Thumbs-up.
Final conclusion:
I got the Hand Grip HG-XPro1 because it's a really well made accessory by Fujifilm and it's slightly cheaper than Thumbs-Up. I do not think that my X Pro 1 is anything close to a Leica and it should not be! I like the protection is gives to the base of my camera and the added all round grip for portrait or landscape holding.
End of the day, it's all up to personal preference so go and try it out yourself

Like all products planning, successors of product A will be known to the company 5 years ahead. So no point gear-chasing. X Pro 1 was just launched in March 2012 and cameras succession frequency seldom come faster than mobile phones or music records! lol

Imo, eos-m is not comparable since no integrated EVF, and Fuji no AA filter is a big plus. Maybe OMD, Nex 7, NX20.

Which ThumbsUp did you try? I believe it is not the EP-7S?
I got the EP-7S and:
1. It does not allow mounting of flash, no cold shoe either.
2. It is perfect fit on the x-pro1, no room to play.
3. Paint job is good and smooth.
The one you tried might be the CSEP-1s ThumbsUp which is meant for Leica. Not really a fair comparison IMHO.

just came from an overseas trip with my X-Pro1. the ovf was really a lifesaver in overly bright environments, as the evf and lcd were not bright enough. and with a polarizing filter installed it compounds the problem.
if this is anything to go by and if there are no improvements with the XE-1's evf, then without an ovf it may disappoint buyers.

Full agree with you, the hybrid VF is one of the main reasons most of us got the x-pro1. After all what advantages do Fuji have if they stick to EVF? It makes no difference with NEX and Nikon V1 anymore. One may say the X-Trans sensor is a breakthrough but sensor technology will continue to improve this Fuji will not hold this advantage for long.

I encountered something peculiar about the X-Pro1.
After downloading my photos onto my iPad (using a SD card adaptor), and putting back the SD card back into the camera, the camera always takes a long time to boot up and get ready for shooting. By long time...i mean seriously long time like >10 seconds. I'm using the Sandisk Extreme Pro 95MB/s SD card.
I called Fujifilm service centre, and they told me to re-format the SD card. I did, and the problem went away and the camera instantly (well almost instantly) fires up.
Anyone experience the same problem?

It is mainly because the iPad sometimes writes some files to the Memory card or you incorrectly unplug the card from your computer, these files interfere with the operation of the camera. Simply switch the little tab on the side to the SD card to lock before you put it in your iPad it will be fine.

Think its an error in the firmware of x-pro1... Could be fixed in future updates..
Most other cameras don't have this problem

Okay I should rephrase to "error with certain Fuji cameras, other camera manufacturers don't have this problem usually. "
I have the EF-42 and it's not true that the EF-42 is as big as a 580EX II..it's only as big as a 430EX and it feels pretty well balanced. Decided to bite the bullet and get the EF-42 as it really helps to have the option of being able to bounce the flash. Recycling times are pretty good, in fact, it's often the lag in the X-Pro1 that slows the shooting process.
