Hi, yrh0413 (Daniel)
I have not been reading up clubsnap for a while. I see that you finally bought XP1!
I also see that you bought the ef x20 flash. What is your thought about the flash?
Possible to write a field report about it?
I remembered that you do not like to use flash, thus I was kinda surprise when I saw that you have 1 in your inventory.
But did you use it fequent enough to share with us your thought on this flash?
Really appreciate the info.
Thanks
Xavier Lin
Haha to be really honest with you, I won't have gotten the EF-X20 if there is an onboard flash on the x-pro1! I needed an automatic flash as there are times I need to rely on flash e.g. Backlight situations. So far I have only fired a couple of test shots with it; I usually use my x-pro1 without the flash. The Canon sync cord was one of the leftovers when I sold my Canon setup.
In terms of usability the EF-X20 performs OK but not decent. Refresh rate is slow even on Lithium AAAs, and it does not have swivel/ bounce feature. A bit on the pricey side... Let's just say it is a premium accessory built specifically for the x-pro1. For close to $300 brand new one can actually get a SB600 or 430EX II that offers so much more than just a dumb TTL flash.
By the way I would suggest you upgrade your lenses and camera to the latest firmware before you spend more time with it. My XF lenses are not dead silent, motor noise is inevitable but it is not disturbing loud either.
