X-Pro 1 User Group

in the end bringing out with many gear again mah?

I'll be keeping my X100 in addition to the X-Pro1 until the 35mm equivalent comes out for the X-Pro1.

X100 is smaller, less threatening and silent. ISO3200 is good and will be good for a long time.

I got it from SLR Revo Funan.

The cases are coming out one by one, guess in a few weeks the Gariz should be available for sales. It's on their blog already.

Hi zan82, just wondering are you buying the Gariz case for your XPro1 body?
I am thinking of getting the half case type. Any advice or suggestions?

Thanks

the gariz case is already out in ebay.

personally using the zelenpol case and find it nicer. up to personal preference btw.

The following is based on my personal view. Constructive disccussion is most welcome, but don't need to flame each other.
Thank you very much.

What kind of Canon are you using?

What kind of photo you like to take?
- Protrait
- Landscape
- product
- Street photography
- event
- sport
- wedding

As Fuji X100 or XP1 user, I can't rush to take photos.
If one is pampered too much by the speed of DSLR, then new user will be frustrated by the Fuji X system.
But can get used to it if one is willing to spend time with it. But also have to depend on what kind of photography you are taking.

Fuji is for Slower composed photos initially.
After awhile, when becoming expert with it, can take "faster" photos.

But some photos are hit & missed.
But strangely, it is because of the disadvantages, that the photos I take make it very rewarding.

I like the photos I took of my sons, have kinda of 3D effect, very natural and "pop" out...

I love my XP1...

NO REGRET!

Choose Fuji X series if:
1. You are willing to spend time learning how to use it.
2. If choose Fuji X series, learn to ignore other people negative comments on it. (it will affect your enjoyment with Fuji).
3. Be patient with it like your new girlfriend and not like long time wife who you can take it for granted.
4. Be forgiving on some missed shoots.
5. You want to have much less gear than DSLR but want to upgrade from PnS.

I think the most of us, the greatest concern is the hit & missed action.
Before taking the plunge into totally new system, the most crucial hurdle for me then was the thoughts of missing some shots.

Though I feel most of the time it is because I am not too familar with the gear and or photography "rules" (Apreture, lighting, speed)
But sometime I am so Kia Su that I am afraid/don't want the thoughts of missed action photos.

I guess there is a few options to that:-
1. either buy another DSLR (back up) to capture photos that requre faster reaction
2. buy a flash gun to "freeze" faster action. (is this correct? But works for me.)

After thinking for awhile, I gave up the 1st option.
~ Cause initially I didn't want a to use heavy "pro" gear (DSLR), it defeat my requirement for light system for pure photo taking enjoyment.
~ Lugging extra lens, flash, tripod etc Bulky body + lens ***shrudder****
~ Focus on 1 system is better. Mastering on 1 gear is better than trying to be "the master of all trades".
~ I don't need to cover event. For Wedding, they have already engage professional Photogragher, so they don't need us. For sport event, like Lion XII matches, F1 racing etc... to be frank, this is totally different interest, to excel in this, the gear must be different and do you really have interest in that in the 1st place?
For Company or school sports day, are you the designated photographer? If not why should we burden with such heavy gear?
~ Lastly how many times do we really need to use it for such purposes. If really require, and die die that day must use it, then loan DSLR for a few days.
~ I don't see it the other way round. (Senario:- I have a DSLR, use DSLR for every purpose, then die die need a lighter system for some once in a blue moon event? Duh...)

XP1 is good enough for such purpose, if we learn how, where and when to take photos. We don't really need to take dashing action to have good photo.

Overall, one has to use it to appreciate the Fuji XP1, quite hard for anyone to tell you is it for you.
Know your photographing characteristic to determine if it's for you.

If clear the 1st stage, you may either want to loan it 1st before buying.
Or if got money, buy it 1st, then sell it if it's not suitable for you.
Confirm got people want to buy it.

Hobby is not a cheap anyway. Most hobbies that I know of is expensive, even if someone going to challenge that jogging and running is free, but buying good pair of shoes, shorts, t-shirt, ipod, gd pair of earphones to keep you company is expensive too. Further argument is that you can buy cheap shoes, short, t-shirt, MP3 & earphones.
You can buy cheap camera too. Case closed.

But don't put too much monetary amount on your interest. JUST DO IT!

Hi there, thanks for your reply... I appreciate your lengthy post :D

I'm a long time Canon user, started with a 300D with kit lens and throughout the years I end up with a 1D body with a whole cabinet of glass, all of them with red rings behind their front lens element. Not forgetting my shoulder bag, my backpack, my roller bag... Whenever I go for overseas photography trips I need to lug at least 15kg of gears in my backpack, and even shooting locally (casual shoot) I need to carry at least my Canon body + 1 lens.

I don't shoot sports, I don't do much portraits except for my gf. I prefer shooting people but not much into street photography. I hardly shoot with speedlites (I don't miss flashguns at all even though my camera has no built-in flash). However I do enjoy shooting in natural light with large aperture. That's why I find the x-pro1 really attractive: small in size, decent 35mm large aperture prime... All these matches my requirements dead on.

Still, for someone with deep DSLR background I am having second thoughts on the Fuji. First off the price of Fuji is equivalent to a used 5D Mark II. Both have slow AF, both deliver good IQ in low light. I got a Powershot G11... Never like it because of its lousy IQ. Only differences between the 2 is: Fuji is much lighter, and I do not have to invest in a second system.

I will definitely NOT abandoning my Canon setup... The Fuji will compliment my Canon gears and serve as my walkaround camera... I foresee there will still be times where I need to rely on my DSLR especially in bad weather, UWA/ telephoto needs. Just want to find out more on your impressions (especially those who own a DSLR setup) on the x-pro1.

Im using a full Nikon system too xD haha I have like 2 lenses only does that count? :P anyway it neatly fills in my midrange lens gap that I have. Nicely compliments my DSLR set up too. AF isnt really that slow. Slow to those who are pampered by ultrasonic motors but most definitely not slow. It would be a nice addition to anyone's area email really.

Once you start using the X-Pro1, you'll not be going back to your Canon unless you need the telephoto, or for some specific functionality.

Simple reason: Weight difference is too significant

I feel that the X-Pro1 is a camera more suited for lens 50mm equivalent and below. With the 60mm lens, the OVF frameline is quite small and will result in lots of missed shots. So any focal length near that and longer you will have to shoot with their low refresh rate EVF.

Will you get the x-pro1 if you have a 50mm f/1.4 equivalent on your Nikon body?

I wish I bought the used x-pro1 from BnS when it was available... Problem now is that I have a standard prime (50mm f/1.2) and it is my walkaround lens... The only deciding factor now is the weight as my 50 prime weigh as much as x-pro1 + 35mm.

Haha. For me yes as I require a light body for daily shooting. You however may have different requirements. Stayig with your canon body will also mean you only require one charger if you travel :)

Yes, it's because I have a strong reason. My reason is the quest to find the lightest system to replace my Nikon DSLR.

You need to find out your own reason. If eventually, you buy XP1 and will still bring both out for shooting. I feel that the reason is not strong enough, that is why you are stuck and didn't act on it.

The motivation should be strong enough...

After getting X100, my Nikon is greatly neglected.

After getting XP1, both X100 & Nikon were sold.

Don't worry, in this 2 weeks, confirm got at least 1-2 seller... Price range about $2600 (+ - $100) with a 35mm lens. keep a close lookout. Post on BnS to let people know also.

Almost everyone will agree, XP1 is no DSLR. So if you want to get XP1, get to know the limitation of XP1 against DSLR. If you can't live with it, move on. If you can, get it by all means.

Don't need to think too much. Try it and you will know that there is no straight answer to your questions. But can see from the photos you takes, it should serve you quite well.

Plus with the greatest advantage of lesser weight. Who knows, you will one day, leave all your canon gear at home, and bring out a 630g system (that's about 24 times lighter!)

You got nothing to loose by trying it out... But must force yourself to leave Canon at home and bring Fuji out only. Then you can force yourself to use it. And truly appreciate it.

It's a matter of getting used to only.

The question that you ask, will confirm have 2 sided answers, 2 camp of thoughts supporting and opposing the idea.

It may make you even more confused de.

Try it yourself, and only you can make the decision yourself...
Only you will know yourself.
