Thanks for your report. But one question : if you had been to japan with your D700 instead of the fuji. Pictures would have been better or not ?
I mean every body says it's crazy sharp and colors are amazing. But is it better than D700/5D2 ? If I take 10 portraits with the 5D2, and 10 with the fuji, then a landscape with both, which pics will be better ? Same situation, same photographer, no focus difficulty. Those from 5D2 or those from x-pro1 ? That's the only thing I need to know for switching.

Thanks :).

:) you should really try one, or at least download some full-res samples off the net to compare with your 5D. My personal view: the IQ is comparable with my 1D3 but the X-Pro1 is less reliable in acquiring a target lock.

:bsmilie: I'm exactly in your shoes but I am coming from a 1D Mark III. What you (or we) are going to miss are:
1. The blazing fast phase-detection AF and AF tracking ability (maybe not so much from a 5D2)
2. Extensive range of lenses from ultra-wides to super telephotos, tilt-shifts, f/1.2 primes, fast zooms, mega-zooms etc
3. Pro-built and weather-sealing
4. Long battery life ( I can easily clock 2000 actuations on a single batt on my 1D3)

Personally I do not own an X-Pro 1 yet but I have played with a demo unit extensively and have gathered a handful of sample photos myself. The X-Pro1's image quality is superb at pixel level and it performs decently at high ISO. Main reason I decided to ditch DSLRs for the X-Pro1 is that I cannot stand the weight of my gears anymore... it is inconvenient to lug 10kg out especially when on a holiday. I saw my camera bags grew bigger... from a shoulder bag to a Streetwalker Pro and then the Harddrive. I guess I will need to get a pack mule for my next bag upgrade :bsmilie:

If you can live with the limited range of lenses from the Fuji and don't mind the slow AF, I don't see losing much to replace your 5D with the X-Pro1. However I strongly believe the X-Pro1 is an odd camera, it takes a long time for one to get used to it and grow into it. My first try on the X-Pro1 is pretty bad... everything feels out of place (coming from a long-time DSLR user), but after a few hands-on sessions I really want to have one in my bag. I will be getting myself a unit before end of this month (still waiting for Canon's mirrorless announcement in June).

My exact sentiments. I had to let go of my beloved Nikon D3s since it was no longer fun lugging around a ton of cam equipment on holidays. The only small and light body APS-C camera that comes close to the high ISO performance of the D3s is the X-Pro, as far as I know. It really helps with my really shaky shooting hand. Having used the X-Pro1 for a few days now seems to have justified my decision to switch, as I'm more than happy with the results. Of course I will miss the blazingly fast AF, the wide choice of lenses, the super long battery life and the advantage of cropping from a full frame sensor, but that it simply means I have to be more careful with my composition from now on. Of course in terms of overall image quality the D3s wins by a long stretch, but this ageing uncle can no longer bear the long hikes carrying a tank! The X-Pro1 is a real keeper I'm sure.

i also ditched my dslr kits in exchange for the xpro1. I realised i could actually live with the somewhat lackluster AF of the xp1. Its not that slow..just not as quick. For a landscape and street shooter, xp1 is perfect for photographer who needs impeccable IQ in a small package. IMO, as long as you are not a working pro(who requires dslr like d700, d3 or equivalent) and do not need insanely fast af, xp1 is pretty much the right tool to use. Like all, i missed too many shots because im reluctant to bring my gear out, xp1 solves this problem.

Hi wolf33d,
When you ask 'which pics will better?', this is a very subjective question because no two camera systems will deliver identical results even when all shooting conditions are identical.
When it comes to noise control under high ISO, skin tone, tonal gradation, resolution (these few parameters), I can offer my personal opinions as follows:
1) The image quality between the D700/D3 and the XPro1 is really very close. However, the XPro1 has done it with a APS-C sensor, i.e. more compact body, lenses that are alot lighter in weight. So for travel trip, I'd rather carry the XPro1 with the 3 lenses and a X100 as backup, instead of the D3s and a bunch of FX lenses plus the D700 for backup.
2) However, if I were to be on assignment to cover an event, shooting sports and action, where I need instant response and dead-on AF, I'd still be using my DSLRs and the FX lenses.

Things like colour, white balance, contrast, dynamic range, film simulation, etc., etc. can also be tweaked depending on which camera system you use. Most digital cameras nowadays offer in their menus customiseable settings that can be set and stored for easy recall.

So, all things said, FOR TRAVEL SHOOTING, I'd rather not be lugging around over 8 kg of DSLR gear when I can get just about similar image quality with equipment that weigh in at less than half. So, it'll be the XPro1 for my travel shooting in future too.

Cheers

thanks to all.
Check this out, and just take a look at the second image (same lens on 5D2) the result is amazing : flickr.com/photos/internationalphotos/7316552234/in/photostream/

You may take a look at this amazing blog too scoop.it/t/fuji-x-pro1

I think I definitely need the fuji. Besides, during my internship I will travel a lot (thailand, vietnam, ...) so the x-pro1 will be a plus.
You will probably see my 5D2 to sell soon ;).

One last question : how about studio photography ? I guess the 5D2 is better for that, and it is not my speciality but after the internship I will have the oportunity to use a studio for free and I really want to take some pics here (portrait and fashion photography). How can perform the Fuji here ? I know there is a flash sync on it, can we use a TTL transmitter for using many flash in the studio (if you know what I mean) ?

Thank you.

have not tried it for studio work, but to my knowledge there isn't a TTL transmitter for the xpro1 at the moment? your best bet would be to set the flashes up manually and triggering them via radio slave

I plan to buy a X-PRO 1 sometime in AUG or SEPT.

I've downsized my Pro Nikon Set up to the minimum I can.... or want to. :)

:bsmilie: I already got rid of my Canon setup. Seriously if there is something I miss sorely after getting the X-Pro1, that could only be the AF... AF on X-Pro1 is really not up to standard; even my iPhone AF better

At least some pro confirm what i had long suspected....
Xpro1 has cleaner image, at least iso1600 or below.

Fuji X-Pro1 Camera Comparisons

As he says here:
" Comparing RAW files between the Fuji X-Pro1 and the Nikon D800 yields very similar results as with the Canon 5D Mark III. Despite having a sensor more than twice smaller in size, the RAW output from the Fuji X-Pro1 looks very clean in comparison to the D800. I prefer the look of the images from the Fuji X-Pro1 at lower ISO levels below ISO 1600, but not above. "

" If Fuji released a full-frame sensor with the same noise characteristics as the sensor on the Fuji X-Pro1, it would be a serious challenge for both Nikon and Canon DSLRs in my opinion. "

IMPRESSIVE STUFF !! :)

Just to share my personal view:-

Nice colour tone for protraits.

Fuji X Pro 1 fits in VERY NICELY.

ANYWAYS I LOVE MY XP1. I am going to dress him up and it's going to stay with me for a very long long time...

Go and find your true love and spend time to nuture the relation between the 2 of you and let the partnership flourish.

For me, I am going to spend time with my camera and 2 sons now...

you are damn right. thinking of getting a XP1 too. I simply love the color tone from a fujifilm film simulation and the compactness. Was a nikon guy with a few of their film SLR but stopped at D70 and never want to go further with their DSLR. This pic taken at 750mm equi [handheld] with a HS20 change my thinking. I could never able to get such vibrant color straight out of the box without any PP. Amazing.

Hi, just wish to know any TS had already try on the adapter from fuji M Mount Leica lens on X Pro1 camera ?

The Fuji adapter out already?

B&H Photo listed expected availability date 28 June.

Actually if you compare X-pro1 and 3 lens, it is really not that much lighter vs a FF+24-70mm f2.8.

Although the 24-70 mm is much heavier, you don't have to change lens. You get similar range 27-90mm vs 24-70mm. DOF is similar too.
