Worst Airshow I have been!

Here's my account.

I lived in Pasir Ris ... kaypoh a bit on Saturday at 9.30am drove past White Sands and was shocked to see the human snake! all over the entire MRT, White Sands, Bus Interchange areas!!! I think findlng the start of the queue will take some effort in itself!

Worried and kiasu ... the next day I start queing at 7.45am .... just to play safe! Imagine the Air Show and SMRT folks inform us services will only start at 8.45am! I was thinking why don't they clear the crowd and prevent a buildup like Saturday! Guess after realising how stupid they are ... buses start rolling early at about 8.20am.

Now ... for the trip back ... we queued like 1 to 1.5 hours from the exhibit area just to reach the bridge over the canal where this girl happily announced over the loud hailer ... "those going to Expo MRT ... there is no queue ... after the bridge, please proceed to the right!" My my .... shouldn't they have a separate express queue for this paid service!!! Those poor souls going to Expo ... queued 1.5hrs, paid $5, then wait somemore in the bus until it filled up!!!

Totally agree with the "worst airshow" tag!

I find the horror stories much more of an 'interesting' read than the actual event itself. My take on such events: just stay home and catch the live telecast. Good e.g. National day.

Aiyoz eh....call me a stickler for details, but I honestly feel that even while in the process of venting anger, vent it accurately.

Firstly, one of the major changes this year is the 'free' shuttle buses from Pasir Ris is operated by SMRT Buses, NOT SBS. I'm not sure about why SMRTB has been selected instead, but its believed that SMRTB provides cheaper charters as compared to SBST. However, with cost cutting comes quality cuts. One may think that it makes no difference whether its SBST or SMRTB, but I beg to differ as I list the reasons (which I believe to be operator related) down below.

Below is based on my observation on public day 1:-

1) 42 bendies deployed with 3 12m buses (last minute addition)
In the past, 48 Double Decks were deployed throughout the duration of the public days. A double deck capacity is slightly more than a bendy (about 10 pax), but it does make a difference in mass charters such as this. The airshow site in the past is much more accessible and nearer to Pasir Ris Int, thus translating to a shorter journey and hence greater frequency of the buses.

Now, with the airshow site being significantly further (about 3km) from the former site, the travelling time will increase and correspondingly it is logical that more than 48 double decks would be required to maintain the same level of service as before given the same number of visitors. However, this is not the case on day 1 as there is a reduction of buses and hence carrying capacity!

This theory is true as in day 2 with about 80 buses deployed the situation is very much improved.

2) The SMRT Buses Factor (new) vs SBS Transit (former)
Let me share a simple observation I had on public day 1. Buses which have returned from the airshow site are temporarily parked at Pasir Ris Dr 3 so as not to block traffic on Pasir Ris Central. So in the ideal situation buses would move from dr 3 to pasir ris central to continously board passengers when the filled buses move off.

On an occassion I saw a SMRT staff based at Pasir Ris Ctrl frantically waving his hands in the direction of Dr 3 to get the buses parked there to move forward as there are no more buses to board at Pasir Ris Ctrl! Of course with the trees etc it is hard to spot his actions at the other side so this poor guy has to run all the way to Dr 3 to get the buses moving. And they still have to find the driver for the bus who had probably went to chat with his fellow drivers. Logically, this problem can be simply solved by deploying radio sets among the staff, but they guy holding on to radio at Pasir Ris Ctrl is stoning there and holding it just because he is a senior staff while the poor guy exercising his hand and leg muscles isn't. Bummer....that 5 mins wasted could had gotten a busload or two to the site in time for the aerial display.

Further displays of poor coordination is in the deployment of buses, although they have 4 computers sitting in the white tent probably looking pretty and impressive. I have to state that the road closure timings for the A380 towing out for the aerial display is fixed everyday (except the first trade day) between 12-12.30pm (yes I was there for all the trade days). SMRTB has been operating the expo shuttles then and it caused their buses to bunch understandably. For the next 3 days they refined their deployment and held back buses before the closure to try and maintain a decent frequency, so have to give them credit for that. However, they suddenly seem to have forgotten once it is a public day or expo team never share with pasir ris team, so they made returning buses go one big round around dr 12 when there are actually no more buses to board at Pasir Ris Ctrl. They rectified it eventually and made buses go straight to Ctrl to board passengers, but I still think it is rather unacceptable for no buses to board for up to 8mins at times (that's even worse than peak hours) between 12-2pm when frequency is most affected by the A380 road closure. Maybe its cos in addition to reason 1 as they have insufficient resources to begin with on day 1.

PSR-SA.jpg

Queues keep growing but not a bus in sight...Day 1

I may seem to be biased against SMRTB in favour of SBST, but as I look back and personally feel that mega events with SBST buses chartered show much greater coordination by the traffic inspectors and with greater reliability. These include IMF 07, past Asian Aerospace shows, as well as the RSAF Open House.

3) Choice of route
Perhaps due to a different boarding location as compared to Asian Aerospace (from Pasir Ris Int), the route on day 1 was to take Pasir Ris Dr 1 then Loyang Ave to the airshow. However, Pasir Ris Dr 1 is studded with plenty of traffic lights, junctions and generally heavier traffic as compared to Pasir Ris Dr 3. On day 2, SMRTB switched to TPE-PIE-ECP-Changi Coast Rd instead on most of the the trips to shorten the journey time (it is amazing how much skipping those traffic lights can save).

Apart from reasons 1-3 that are operator related above, below are 2 more reasons I feel that contributed to the disaster on day 1.
A) Security arrangements
The organisers mentioned about a brand new 6 lane road that improves accessibility this year, which is true as it allowed a/c up to the A380 to be towed along the road. For other vehicles, it is a different story as those Certis Cisco officers (rent-a-cop and not from the home team) feel that it is necessary to reduce to one lane in each direction for security purposes. This has the same effect as a serious accident on CTE that leaves only 1 lane passable during peak hour. I can't see why they can't position one officer in each lane to allow simultaneous checking...at least that should open another lane in each direction.

B) Airshow site
In the past, the airshow site is readily accessible and many visitors take service 9,19 or 89 to changi cargo complex area and take a short walk to the entrance to skip the crowd at Pasir Ris Int or because it is a more convenient choice for them. However for this year it is not accessible by public transport. It didn't help that SMRT charges (probably set by the Airshow organisers I think) an extortionally high $5 for a 15mins (if there is no jam) ride from Expo MRT, thus many decide to go to Pasir Ris instead. Taxi is avoided as far as possible by many due to the recent cab crazy fare increase.

Yupz...those are my honest takes on the public day situation. Having went on a trade day, I would say that the show site is quite spacious as there aren't so many people (though 40k is crazy). The USAF aircraft are also barricaded and visitors aren't allowed to enter except on invitation so unobstructed photos could be had of them. It is just pure bad luck that there is overcast weather on both the public days during the aerial displays; the Black Knights were actually quite good as the white smoke can be seen against the blue sky on the trade days but could be better with coloured smoke which they have to abandon experimenting to prevent a PR disaster.

I'm also quite disappointed with the aircraft mix with almost the same aircraft types represented. A couple of helicopters, the Gulfstream 450 and Legacy 600 all left before the public days so there are fewer aircraft during the public days. Well, with the Boeing Dreamliner and a few other new aircraft projects completed by 2010, let's hope for a better S'pore Airshow 2010!

Cheers!

They should also have more time slots for the ariel displays or starts it at a later time slot....

I was also puzzled that on trade days, the show starts at 12pm and the airshow at 12.15pm? not much time for some of the ppl still queing when the show started....

why take those buses ? dun need lah... just dropped off changi beach.. take a slow walk to the breakwater beside the convention centre.

From what I know the airshow organisers did try to shift the slot this year as the timing is very bad for photography and viewing as well due to the overhead sun and heat. However, this time slot is still given by CAAS as it is the period where there is the least traffic at Changi Airport as the airspace has to be closed during the airshow. Thus there is a need to minimise inconveniences caused to the arriving/departing passengers, as well as airlines at Changi Airport whilst the airshow is going on.

This also helps explain why it is not able to have a second timeslot like RSAF Open House.

Hahaha... I tot the real commando that day was..

hey thats a nice shot! of me! haha... feel damn stress holding on to those babies... yet weirdly happy
but seriously... the organisers were really caught off guard... i have been attending air shows since yr 2000... only SAF organised ones like Army Open House and RSAF open house can make it... the private sector got a steep learning curve to catch up..

felt like i was in a 3rd World country rushing to get home for the festivities that i read in the papers.. but it was a good experience... to feel the squeeze right here in SG. no need to travel so far to xperience

i went on the last trade day. wasn't difficult at all. just get ur tag identification card walk through detectors and in! $5 shuttle out was fast a bit crowded but didn't wait long at all. why is this thread called the 'worst airshow i have been' dosen't fit at all!

If you went on any of the public days, especially the first day, you will think much differently!

Agree, was there on the first day . nobody borthered to check the tickets . $40 and i believed some people pass though it the next day w/o paying.

Next, our car was parked at the car park next afer changi ferry termnal and it was around 6KM walk from the site, we walked in but decided to take a cab at the main road outside to escape from the surcharge since its just quite near ( speakng in taxi sense) . flag for a cab, cant get it since all went inside Airshow (guess, can earn more) . SO continued walking and a WHite LImo mercs cab honk at us seeing our desperate tired face from the beating heat. After went in to the cab, he quoted a price starting from $35 - $30 - $25 ,he say:" i provide u full limo service" ( at that time when i board , it was around 3-4Km left) and i told him its just infront. He said how much am i willng to pay him. Looking at how tired my dad was, we paid him $10.

The problem was , i tried to look at his name from the lisence and its been covered by a sticker.

After alighting, i went to check out the lisense plate and he sped off. few minutes later, he honk a teenage boy walking at the bank of the road and the boy went in .

This people just spoilt the well image of singapore. Corruption in this city?? (its a pity to see these happening ruining the image not only of singapore but to the taxi company as well)

I'm sure you didn't see any of the photos in this thread, nor the organiser apologising for it (IIRC in local paper).

mi... only if I can get a trade pass. ;)

No trade pass = no go for me. Personally I feel events that involves high turnout of participants should be anticipated, well planned and managed with extra care.

A stampede would happen one day if crowds cannot keep their calm if something happen.

lol i guess the frustration gets to my head, u are right about the right bus operator mistake.

You haven't read the rest of this thread have you?

It's like people start a thread "Substandard Food At McDonalds" and complain that McDonalds has been serving substandard Big Macs and you come in saying "oh, my McChicken yesterday was fine."

Totally ignorant and irrelevant. Ignorance isn't bliss, you know.

Interesting; this happening in Singapore. :o

Was this fiasco reported in the newspaper? I certainly hope somebody take note and prevent this from happening again. I'm going to S'pore for the F1 and hope nothing like this will happen. My hotel to the F1 venue is walking distance, not a problem; but I don't want to miss my flight home.

If u are carrying big luggages then be worried, u may either not able to squeeze into our public transport becoz of the mob or being stuck in a jam cause by the mob's transport :bsmilie:

I went to the Singapore Airshow 2008 on 230208(Sat) and reached Pasir Ris MRT at 0815 hrs for the shuttle bus to the Changi Exhibition Centre(CEC).

They did scan the barcode at the Pasir Ris tentage area and I boarded the SMRT bendy bus and the journey took 30 minutes and I had to stand in the bus. The crowd was already swelling when I was in the bus.

Reaching the CEC, we had to walk to the security tentage area for our securtiy check and I could see that they couldn't cope with the crowd even at the early hours. IIRC, there were less than 10 X-ray machine.

Most of the exhibitors in the exhibition area have vacated their booth or are fenced up. Boeing did give a nice red tag keychain.

During the airshow, the CEC plaza was packed with people and the police and SOC personnel were patrolling the area.

In the morning, the RSAF static display of Chinook and F16D did not allow any visitor to come into the fenced up area but after lunch, visitors can go into the area. I guess the RSAF saw that the US static display did allow visitors to see and take photos. The US crew were on the PR campaign and many visitors took their photos with them.

When the Airbus A380 was parked at the display area after the airshow display, one of the Airbus crew was waving to the crowd and they started to converge on the stairway thinking that they were able to go into the A380. Unfortunately, that was not the case.

I went back home at 1600 hrs and I already saw the queue forming to go back home after the airshow display. People were jammed at the Pedestrian crossing and the SOC personnel were controlling the crowd at the bridge before letting them go to the bus bay. Woman and parents with children were caught in the hot afternoon sun.

There were no clear indication of which lane for the bus and the shuttle bus to Pasir Ris was right at the end. The SOC personnel were shouting to the crowd to not run and slowdown. However, it had the reverse effect and it seems like a movie where refugees were fleeing and running for their bus to freedom. The SOC personnel did try their best for parents with children to board the bus first. I had to stand again in the bus for the ride to Pasir Ris MRT.

The Singapore Airshow is basically setup for trade show and it couldn't handle the crowds during the public days. The organisation was really bad compared to the RSAF, Navy and Army open house that I've attended.

For a $20 paid event, I had to stand in the bus and was herded like sheep and a refugee fleeing a country.

Even the public days webpage was not updated.

I guess we'll have to give the organisers a bit of slack. This is the first show at a brand new venue. Bound to have some hiccups. Overall, I think it was better than at the old site.

I went there on Thusrday. I found the registration a breeze. I got a ticket through SMS. Place the phone, with the SMS showing, against a reader and the ticket was printed! Was real impress with the technology. Very much faster than at the last show. I had a car pass, so did not experience any transport problem, smooth traffic from Bedok to the site at about 11am. Parking was OK, managed to find a slot within 5 min. Had to walk a bit, no big deal. As for taxis, I saw the stream of taxis waiting to pick up passengers, so I suspect the wait time to be minimum.

I'm going again tomorrow, but do not have a car pass this time round. Will have to take a taxi. Hope no issues.

As for the organiser, Jimmy Lau has already adminted there there were some lessons to be learnt. I've work with him on the '94 show, I'm sure he will follow up and do a better job the next time round. Besides, from the feedback here, seems like most of the problems is with our boys from the Home Team. Don't know if the organisers have control over them.
Thursday? I believe that's during Trade Show days.

Anyway, such so-called 'family outing exhibitions' are nothing to shout about these days I think. Everyone wants to have a piece of it, and ends up it ends up like something out of a wrong chapter of disaster management training video and nobody gets anything except a pot full of boiling blood and anger.

Anyone remembered PC and IT Shows of the past? Nowadays we've got Ah Gong and Ah Mas joining the fray and above all.... PRAMS!!!!!!

Actually, frm my experiences on sat itself, no matter how bad the organising committee was, how bad the plans went, nothing can be compared to the mindset of the ppl attending. While I was at the queue, I had seen a lot of "SINGAPOREANS" cutting queue and jus jumping in. The ppl who they cut did not make noise or were to shy (aka. pai say) to do a thing about it. Thats when my story starts...

This ah beng looking teenager stood right next to me when I had already queued for over 1 1/2 hours. Looking at him smsing while pretending nothing was wrong, I asked him if he was attending the airshow. He replied yes and I told him the queue starts from way behind and he has to go queue up. He acted as if he couldn't hear me. Then I told him if he is not going to do so, I will get the security personnal to remove him. He then procede to mumble some nasty things and then challanged me to do so. This bugger then procede to jump queue a few more times till he was 20m in front of me. I kept me anger in check, waited and waited till the SOC guys were in sight. Then I procede to inform them what happened and that I was "challenged" to report him. Guess what.. they went up to him & removed him!

Both going to the exhibition site and going back, buses were stuck at the bays cos "SINGAPOREANS" did not want to board cos there were no places to sit. The organisers had little choice but to delay the outgoing buses and ask those who do not mind standing to board the bus first. I don't know how many of you seen it, but the bus service is FREE mind you. Why can't we stand when we have been doing so while going to work everyday? I can understand for the older folks and young childern who might need to sit down. But for the rest of us able bodied ppl, why are we acting like spoilt kids? Everyone wants to attend the show, so why can't we jus show a little consideration?

This reminds me of a weekday when some idiots tried to board the bus through the exits cos some alighted and the front was full (the driver did not open the front door). The driver voiced out to tell them to alight cos its not fair to those queuing & they are not paying (can't tap the EZ-Link card). They jus stood there acting they couldn't hear or couldn't be bothered. The driver had no choice but to move on. They got the cheek to say in an audible tone that all they were trying to do is to go to work and that the money they pay does not go to the driver, why is she so on the ball.. my goodness!! If you are late its your fault for not factoring the right amt of travelling time. And do you know how much money the bus companies are being cheated of a year? These people shld try to live in the outskirts of Shanghai and understand how lucky we are already!

What I am trying to say is, we want is to achieve world class standards. We can have 1st class infrastructure but sad to say.. the mindsets of some of our citizens are worse then 3rd world. Organisers can prepare for everything but if ppl were to think in their own world, there is only so much they can do... All in all, we have this problem which is esclating.. when things fail to work, we put the blame on everything but we often fail to take a look at ourselves first.
