<wonglp> Traveling with my mirrorless pen

wonglp said:
Hi, thanks Clanegie! I would say both. 75mm is really sharp even wide open, while EM5 hi ISO is at least a stop better than EP3. So EP3 ISO 1600 is somewhat similar to ISO 3200 or higher on EM5. EP3 is still an excellent camera. I missed the EP series aesthetics...

Based on your experience on the EP series, any advice how I can achieve good shots in low light condition and at 1/100s(for example)?

Been playing with ISO and also the built in flash on EP3, but till now the results aren't satisfactory at all.

Sorry to hijack your thread with this query.

Hi Clanegie,

A little difficult to advice without knowing what "unsatisfactory" results you meant. So I will assume below scenario.

Typically, if I want to take a portrait and background, I would used largest aperture, lowest ISO (with the slowest speed that I can handhold without shakes). Rule of thumb for handhold shots is 1/(Focal length x crop factor), if I use 75mm in this case, it should be 1/150s. However, with IBIS, I can usually go below that. In my example, I did 1/20s with burst mode and handhold with EVF to the eye for more stable posture as I try to improve my keepers, was like 1 out of 3. So if you use say Panasonic 20mm/1.7, you can handhold even slower, this is actually a very useful lens for such situation (handhold portrait+landscape shots)

I don't normally stick to a shutter speed unless there's certain effect I want to achieve like panning shots.

If the faces are dark, I would use "slow 2" flash to illuminate the face + background. Hope that helps.

Else, you can PM me your picture and we can chat further:) Cheers!

Went back Seoul Tower on the day with family. Was rather misty on one side of it.

Teddy Bear Museum, Seoul Tower

Kids enjoy this, there's 2 sides of this place. One shows the history of Korea with Teddy bear, the other modern Korea. They have this in Jeju Island as well. Both shot with EM5+Panasonic 7-14mm.

Wonglp,

Your photos are beautiful. You mentioned you used mirrorless pen - EP3 Olympus, btw what is mirrorless pen ? I have no idea of it. I also have a OLYMPUS Mini-Pen E-PM1 with the standard len 14-24mm, does it mean mine is also a mirrorless pen ? I wish I can take the same qualities of photos as yours. The min ISO is set at default 200, not lower than some of other cameras. When taking indoor photo using M or P, I find the pics are rather grainy, why ? Please enlighten me more. Thanks.

Hi RickyMoney,

Mirrorless Pen should be explained in 2 parts. Mirrorless is a new hybrid that doesn't have the pentamirror/prism box design which is present in DSLR so making the camera more compact, while still possible to have interchangeable lenses. Pen OTOH, refers to mimicking the retro Olympus Pen camera design which is a half frame (one film takes 2 shots) film camera from 1959.

The EP / EPL / EPM (what you are using) refers to Pen / Pen Lite / Pen Mini which all takes after the design of original Pen, so yes, E-PM1 also Pen. The OMD E-M5 though is design after OM series, so technically not a Pen, though it's still a micro four thirds (m43) which consists of 2 camera makers Panasonic & Olympus, and lenses from these 2 companies as well as a few other 3rd party ones.

Min ISO 200 does it mean fixed or set as auto? If you set ISO as auto, while not setting the High limit of ISO, when taking indoor which is dim, the camera will automatically increase ISO so that the shutter speed is high enough for you to take stabilized shot. And most cameras are very conservative, meaning they would rather increase ISO rather high to ensure the user gets a stabilized shot. A grainy stabilized shot is better than a less grainy but blur shot...

I normally set ISO to what I can handhold. I actually describe this on post #342 as below:
"Typically, if I want to take a portrait and background, I would used largest aperture, lowest ISO (with the slowest speed that I can handhold without shakes). Rule of thumb for handhold shots is 1/(Focal length x crop factor), if I use 75mm in this case, it should be 1/150s. However, with IBIS, I can usually go below that. Hope that helps, otherwise please send me your pictures via PM, we can chat further. Thanks for dropping by.

Cheers

Thanks for the advice.
I need a fast shutter as my 2 yrs old daugther is very active. She can't stand still for a sec.
I've never tried this "slow 2" flash before, shall give it a try.

I train mine to stand still from young as I use quite a few manual lenses:)

Here's one to share on art filter, dramatic tone B&W art filter. It's one of the most fun features in Oly m43 cameras!

Didn't know Oly had this useful B&W filter in it's set. Nice shot.

Great shot. Like how you position the highway to lead the viewer's eyes into the picture.

Yes it is, I actually prefer using this more than the original dramatic tone, which can be a little over-cooked at times.

Thanks Richard, glad that you like it.

Here's a "street" shot which I always want to take a shot like this with my kids, but I always forget after I took it...The leaves are starting to change colors, though not the most brilliant of timings, nonetheless a nice moment to share.

Myeongdong, a place that has shopping streets that sports mostly international brands, mid to high price with some roadside stalls that sells cheap stuff as well. There's also much Korean cosmetic shops, a new flagship New Balance shop, and Artbox stationery shop, which is rather popular now in Singapore, of course at much lower price here.
Lotsa young people spotted here as well.

Sharing a few taken here.

Brought family to the Lotte World, located at Jamsil which is easily accessible via subway. As it's more for kids, my folks hang out at the shopping area instead of going in, so best of both worlds!

Here's 2 outdoor shots to share.

Thanks my friend! Glad you like it.

General Yi Shun-Sin, naval commander who fought the Japanese during 16th century. Gyeongbokgung Palace Gwanghwamun gate is between his statue and mountains behind. Taken on a taxi ride, and the taxi driver told me briefly about him. He didn't bring us to where we want, but he's sure one good english tour guide.
