Same guess as u. I quite 90% sure the 3rd is from D80,

and the answer is....

pic 1: D80

pic 2: J1

pic 3: D3000

:)

Wrong guess but am surprise that D80 still hold its ISO well as compared to newer technology.

I'm surprised that the D3000 is so bad.

now let's compare the J1 with the D300. again these are cropped iso 3200 images at 100%.
D300 image resized from 12mp to 10mp and sharpened.

A pretty respectable and surprising result from the "small size sensor" J1, IMHO.

In real life shooting (ie as compared to studio test shots), I find that the V1 produces better results at ISO 3200 if we let the camera make all the decisions eg. if the Smart Photo Selector mode is used, than if we set the ISO to Auto or 3200.

For example, compare these 2 shots taken by the V1 (at ISO 3200 set by Smart Photo Selector) and the Sony A77 (at ISO 1600 set by AutoISO) at the recent World Orchid Show.

i think it's pretty surprising that the 10mp small sensor V1 can hold its own against a 24mp APS-C DSLR like the Sony A77 at higher iso.
Nikon may well have unearthed an unlikely gem with the 1 camera. :bsmilie:

the proof, they say, is in the pudding. so let's do an image quality comparison (image samples from imaging resource).
i have taken the 100% size image crops at iso 3200 from three 10mp cameras; Nikon D3000, Nikon D80 and Nikon J1 (in no particular order)

can you tell which photo was taken by which camera?

1st is D3000?

2nd is J1?

3rd is D80?

Hi Zaren,

Thanks for the photos, the colors and ISO performance is really amazing. :) Are these raw or jpg? If jpg any chance of posting the raw files?

Hi pbear,

these are JPegs from the Imaging Resource website. Another reviewer (Steve Huff) has compared RAW files in his own tests and found those from the V1 were on par or better than the Sony Nex 7 at above iso 1600.

Yep...pretty amazing.

Cheers,
z.

You can go on the DPreview site, click the "Nikon 1 Preview" then select the section "Compared to..." (there is a JPEG and a RAW option) there you can compare the V1 with a lot of other cameras at various ISO in a lab condition. See it for yourself.

Nice! I'll go check it out.

Here it is; not sure why the V1's image is less cropped than the other cameras when it has a smaller sensor. :S Performance doesn't look bad though; both RAW and JPG seems better than the GF3 even at high ISO, which is unexpected given the small sensor size of the V1.

Don't forget the GF3's sensor is ancient.
