Will Greece be expelled from the European Union?

Just heard on the radio by BBC World Service.... The Greek Parliament has just approved on accepting the the tough measure demanded by the EU before a new bailout plan... Once again... wasted $$$$ and time on a referendum that still ended on a YES vote. While I personally believe in the local saying of "O$P$"... its really better if Greece has gotten out of EU to start anew...

Told you. Beggars can't be choosers.

The Tsipras government showed it naïveté and choon lots of patterns, but in the end learnt the hard way what the previous government already knew. Same goes with the part of the Greek people opposing - oppose all you want, when you bank ran out of Euros, you have no options.

But having said that, EU missed a chance to try to solve the problem. Instead they chose to postpone the problem till later. Now with IMF's threat of pulling out, some member no money to lend, others unwilling to, they are the one in hot soup. In my opinion, they should have let Greece go on a "holiday", work with their own currency for a while to try to sort things out (but stay in the EU - like UK). In return, EU should have written off a larger part of the loan, and continue to lend to Greece and support it.

But Greece is small fry... Portugal and then Spain is up next.

I would be much more concerned if there hadn't been such voices at all. The fact that they exist and continue to warn shows that many people involved in the affair are aware of the risks. I think, the results of the last days reflect that.
Nothing surprising in the article. It is rather strange to label these people suddenly as some sort of fortune tellers or crystal ball users.

Except for Maggie and the former Greek PM admitting to Greece lying, none of the others are "people involved in the affair" - just economists and soothsayers that no one listens to.

Hindsight is 20/20.

Did LKY ever publicly express an opinion on the EU back in the day when they were first forming it?

Yes I'm sure he did. He's a v close friend of Margaret Thatcher, and they often agree with each other. So u can guess what LKY was thinking abt EU

I understand what you are saying and thank you for being in the discussion but I would never presume to know LKY thoughts on the subject based upon a friendship with Maggie...I sure would like to know what he really thought about it.

Your judgment speaks for you. Contrary to popular belief, politicians have plenty of advisers and knowledgeable people to support them. But those people usually remain hidden whereas the politician takes glory and shame for making the decisions. But yeah, simplifying things seems to be the fashion of the moment and a trend among those unfamiliar with the topic.

Can't agree more :) - Maybe the leaked diplomatic notes have something along this topic? ;)

I agree with you... but back to your original statement that these were "the people involved" - you will need to show evidence that the persons quoted in the articles at least advised "the people involved." Otherwise, yours is just an unfounded general statement.

I must buy this One man's view of the world book...sounds interesting.

You are talking about 'unfounded statements'? Is it already Friday? :)
You can search the online sources for news articles and commentaries during the period and you will find plenty of voices warning to introduce the Euro. it was a hot debate everywhere, especially because of the risks. Germany's currency was considered a stronghold. Many Germans remembered the past 100 years and the many ups and down in their currency (devaluation, inflation, currency swaps, fixed exchange rates etc), not keen on giving up again what was developed in the 40 years after the war.

Well, you need to link these voices to "people who were involved". Right now, lots of noise about MRT also... seems to have no impact whatsoever.

Tsipras sacked all the ministers who objected to the deal. Cleared the way...
