Wide angled noob: suggestions for which 35mm to get

You can borrow my Fujica V2 anytime Dan :bsmilie:

I notice a lot of your people-interest images are 50mm shots from fairly close quarters, lots of 1/3 body, head-and-chest shots. This a natural for the 50mm. Often when one switches to a slightly wider "all around" lens, the temptation is to shoot a scene like you know, i.e. like a 50. The same shot with a 35mm will introduce slight extension distortion (being much worse with 28 and wider). The 3/4 to full body shot, which is more natural for 35mm, is going to bring in a lot more background, one is going from portraiture to environmental portraiture.

Richard, your reply cut to the heart of the matter, thanks! You're not far off, I would use the fujinon 35/2 as the artistic one and the other for the all rounder and looks like lux fle may be the leading contender

But as always bro, you're taste so high my wallet doesn't like you anymore!:sweatsm:

Hahaha .. the truth sometimes hurt .. in this case the pocket

Here's one taken tonight during dinner

Just a snap shot but should show you what the lens can do

Woah Richard!...the 35 Lux ASPH V2 looks good but it is probably too expensive for mere mortals:)

Dan, you can consider the 35 Lux ASPH V1 but it is probably too sharp to your liking. It is also a tad bigger than the bokeh king. If you want sharp and small, 35 Cron ASPH is one good option.

The bokeh king is a good lens...just that it is hard leaving up to the "king" label. I like it for its size and build. I'm happy with its image quality too but I'm not fussy over the IQ...fashion over function as you eloquently put.

Three "cult" lenses for your consideration. I think these are your cup of tea: best for "artistic" b/w:)
- 35 Cron Version 1 8-element Chrome
- 35 Lux Version 1 Steel Rim Chrome
- Hexanon-UC 35 F2.0 (Black Paint though)

My choice will be the 35 cron asph. So far it is the best 35 lens with all factors balanced:

form + IQ + price + size

The best is the square hood. Very sexy! 35Lux is a superb lens no doubt but size and the hood puts me off. But still a top notch lens.

You will not go wrong with both 35cron asph or 35lux asph.
But, for what I know this two is out. Just like how you dislike Tmax film. ha ha.. :bsmilie:
Modern sharpness and super clean look.:)

My heart vote for this two vintage glass as what Wongsan suggested.

- 35 Cron Version 1 8-element Chrome
- 35 Lux Version 1 Steel Rim Chrome

If I remember 35lux v1 minimum focus is 1m. As for 35cron minimum focus is 0.7m..

The best combo I would suggest if $$$$ in not an issue.
One 35lux asph and 35cron v1 8-element.

Btw, anyone member here has any photo sample on b&w film with ZM biogon 35/f2.8? : D

I'm not a 35mm guy. Don't like them too sharp too.
Used to have Lux35Asph, Lux35preAsph(Titnium), BokehKing & Cron35Asph(black-paint & chrome). Decided to let both the Cron35Asph & Lux35preAsph go.
Lux35Asph is sharp but not clinically sharp.
BokehKing size is very nice (my favorite for size)
Lux35preAsph is also small and have a nice glow wide-open. Quite like this lens but decided to let it go cos wanted to build my 50mm's instead.

Second that!!! ;) ....and with relatively fast auto-focus to beat!

Otherwise, how about consider the voigtlander ultron 35mm f1.7? Certainly not a rare lens but that said, it doesn't come by that often too...

I've heard terrific things too about the ultron 1.7, see how confusing things get? Haha

Nippon Kogaku 35mmf1.8 is also nice. I can lend it to you if you want to try.

Yessir! That's my struggle with going wide. Unfortunately I kinda lose my bearings and you're absolutely spot on, I tend to shoot like I shoot 50, old habits die hard I suppose. I do like your term "environmental portraiture" it really helps anchor the mindset with a key thought. Cheers for that bro...

Vince thanks for your take, i value your opinion greatly, it was really your fault (kidding) for my dilemma with those wonderful Bokeh king shots recently, they have a certain real magic which I can't really put my finger on. It got me thinking about exploring 35s.

You nailed the leading candidates with the list although truthfully I am completely ignorant of versions and elements, I would however add the 35 cron asph to the circle of confusion (haha)

Francis, frankly, any lens is putty in your hands...damn, that's a pretty shot! I also agree that the form factor is a very important part of selecting a 35

Wow the tri X shots are amazing! Tmax...erhm if not for your prodigious skills...haha

Now that's one I will eventually have in my arsenal...nose bleed and drooling again...chopes on CK!

Hahaha ... now now .. you asked for help and I mean to serve .. what I was concern is that the sharpness of the lens might not be to your liking .. as I remember our conversion on the Noc that you prefer not too sharp as Wongsan mentioned
That why I posted some shot for you to see ..
Looking forward to see how you get out of this circle of confusion :bsmilie:

Cheers
