Why is making a spectacle could be so expensive in Singapore?

If you want to impress a mature woman who is double of your age and win her heart and bed there is no better way than choosing the $600 Oakleys. :bsmilie:

I prefer "Fresh" fruits......

Hi, I'm going to hcmc next month and, after reading this thread, am tempted to go make a pair of specs there. Do u know how many days it takes to get it down? Coz I'm only there for 3d2n. And in Singapore, at least for shops that I have visited, they make actually take more than 3 days from prescription to collection. Also any recommended shops in hcmc?

Best thing after you touch down HCMC, go change currency at any goldsmith shop, then head str8 to those optician shop, ask them for express service. I was there for 4D3N and remember going to the shop on 2nd day, and got it before flying back :D

Before this express service happening there are girls in HCMC airport to give him more "express" express service first. :bsmilie:

Wah you have been ripped off... or rather that guy is trying to rip you off. Go to Queensway for a variety plus good reasonable prices. I personally only wear Oakleys because I am an active person... I perspire so much that anything else rust on my face lol.

Korean brand plus HOYA should be approx 200 - 300 bucks tops. Hoya lenses are pretty good. My Oakleys are fitted with one and that one is pretty clear and smooth when I wipe with a cloth.

You confirmed ganna ripped off, the shop is not ethical.

I got my Korean made no brand frame plus multicoat lens for $100+ at Pearl Optics Kovan branch at only. Want to buy rubber hooks and they gave those to me free too.

$500 plus was what I paid for my Tag Heuer some 5 years ago and that frame lasted me 5 years plus before I finally broke it from the years of daily wear, abuses, job accidents and sleeping while wearing it. Best money spend.

Actually the last time I made spectacles in Shanghai, I could collect it within 2 hours. There was a spectacles 批发市场。Im guessing it wont take as long in Vietnam too..
I hope so. I guess local neighbourhood shops often have to send orders to centralised facilities to process, same like doing specialised photo prints, which may take longer.

Thanks for the note. U mentioned change currency there, is it better than changing here?

wow now HCM City got female limo drivers . straight into cite center express service...hmm.

anyway if the cost of replacing your specs are expensive and you are doing on a yearly basis, but your eyesight has sort of stabilized, you may wish to consider getting lasik.

err. but I have 6/6 vision heh no wear specs. only thing when very tired is see bokeh balls only.

Go to JB. Very cheap. Wait one or 2 hours. Actually I suspect this is the MO. Optical Shops open in SG. They pay for rental, renovation and some staff. They get SG customers' orders. They tell SG customers waiting/process time is 1 or 2 weeks. Every few days, a batch process of orders is sent to JB outlet of same chain. The glass/plastic lenses are cut and fitted. Sent to SG to customers. Make at JB cost, charge SG prices.

I went to my neighborhood spectacle store wanting to make a normal spectacle for myself as I know that those optical chain in shopping mall could be very expensive. I wanted a spectacle which I could use daily as I need to move around regularly in the day due to the nature of my job as a sales.
To the shock of my life, the shop offered me $500 for a simple Korean non-branded frame and Hoya transition multi-coated lens of -400 degree.
The shop owner told its the Hoya lens that is expensive and he had given me a very good discount already because I live around the area and was a return customer.
I eventually walked away because I felt I was ripped off.

Is there really a good place to make quality spectacle without spending a bomb in Singapore?

there are :)

but to be fair, U were going for a pair of Hoya transitions multi-coated. U pay for quality though I'm quite sure u prob can make the same for around $300 without frame if u ask around more.

I'm myopic 800 degrees and astig around 200 for both eyes and make multi-coated , high index 1.6 glasses and the glasses alone cost me around $200 plus w/o frame as a comparison.

My understanding is, VND is not really an international currency like RMB, JPY, EUD, so not much tukar wang carries this currency. Even if they do, the rates are lousier here. So might as well go there change.

i'm always using Oakleys.

..... it has taken hits from basketballs, footballs, tennis racquets, punches, kicks, thrown all over the place... and it's still working well in one piece.

.

ha ha ha ! ok I hope your face is still in one piece from all that abuse

Think maybe you need a face protection shield instead.. :bsmilie:

one im using now is a cheap $50 specs..antique nerd looking type..serve me well for the past 5 years...

think i need to redo my specs soon..

as a very active person.. i need to have strong frames. what i usually do is import the frames, then get the local opticians to cut the lenses.

and i believe in getting the best from the beginning.

other than my sunglasses, my Oakley spectacles have been with me for over 7 years.

full titanium and lightweight. it has taken hits from basketballs, footballs, tennis racquets, punches, kicks, thrown all over the place... and it's still working well in one piece.

i paid a total of $600 for it, but for the years of service, i think it's pretty worth it.

Agree with you on the durability of an Oakley frame. I used to own a pair of prescription Oakley frames, changed lenses twice using the same frame, and it remained in shape and good condition throughout for more than 6 years. A couple of years back changed to another brand frame (cheaper) as I wanted to save cost, but totally regretting now as it lost its grip very soon, and slips easily, which my previous Oakley doesn't. My next frame will be an Oakley again.

Btw, with regards to the cost of spectacle lenses, transition, hi-index,multi coating.... all these will add up to the cost of the lenses very quickly.

My Oakley with me 9 years already. Also changed lens twice. And changed the black rubber thingy too.

Because:
• businessmen make big profits from spectacles.
• frames become fashion statements
• optometrists try to convince you to buy one set of spectacles for normal use; and another for using the PC
• you need yet another 3rd set of sunshades to look cool

Still in one piece though :bsmilie: though these days i prefer to spend on camera lenses than spectacle lenses.

That being said, I'm saving up for Porsche Design or Oakley frames with Nikon prescription lenses. Durable and extremely clear, with distortion control. I'm prepared to part with at least 2k

Oakleys are extremely durable. Just make sure that you get the Titanium full frames, not the normal metal ones
