why have you bought an olympus?

Downsides
Slower AF and lesser focus points. Just thinking about how previous photographers managed without AF and focus points in the old days and still delivered the goods puts me to shame. I am just not using my gear to its full potential.

agree. its up to us to adjust to this. im starting to learn where to point the focus point, it needs some contrasty area to get the focus fast. also, i use S-AF+MF on 'slower' lenses like the 35mm macro or 70-300mm. this is handy when the lens hunts, just turn it a bit and it will find the focus faster

i went with olympus because they dared to come up with something new in terms of form factor which is a breath of fresh air in the sea of gigantic slr's

slow af? i dun mind, plus lately ive been having some fun with manual focus lenses... sometimes we are just too spoilt ;p

Eh bro... I don't quite understand. Still new here ah. Can explain what you meant?
Sorry should be clearer. I meant that the SHG are great lenses
and designed for digital. I think they have a unique look too.
The second part, I meant that Nikon and Canon ended up
releasing digital specific lenses too.

not have time to go thru 4 pages of posts but for me.... its the 'Olympus' colour

Wow...dpreview thread so damn long to read. In any case, most of the points are repeated over and over again.

Most important, I like the Olympus output on both film and digital, most particularly the color tone. It may not be correct according to some, but it has the balance I like.

The above may not be understood by the less experienced, but this one should - it's a real bonus that the high quality of Olympus comes at great value ! Innovative as well.

There are limitations, but so do every other camera, one just has to adapt and exploit the strengths. It helps that I do have a few other cameras to suit as needed.

I like the tone of Oly lenses too!!!

Just resurrecting this thread.

I just wonder, just for the heck for it, did anyone actually buy Olympus for the opposite reason to this guy??

http://www.clubsnap.com/forums/showpost.php?p=5494416&postcount=4

Because I dun want to share!!

I dun want to share or lend my lens or my equipment to my cheapskate friends! Hence I buy Olympus, since nearly all my friends are using Canon and Nikon. LOL!!!

Since this is resurrected, I might as well put down my thoughts.

"I want to see the disbelief in people when they see a great photo but from an Olympus"
"Amusing people with 'lowly' stuff is an enjoyment in itself"

Sorry lah, I have attain the next level liao, at the psychological level instead of technical level.

I bought strangely cos I cant decide between nikon or canon and pentax is difficult to buy
also not sure where sony-minolta is going that time, well lucky I did not buy cos after minolta pulled out the service is ...
and the swivel LCD (the first for dslr on e-330) help me open the pocket

Macro shooters especially... this system is the way to go....
2X crop factor... in body IS.... swivel LCD.... you cannot ask for a better system...
prob the thing oly short of is a 150mm macro lens (weather seal) and a new flash which is weather seal..

its colors and affordable high quality lenses are of course another plus point....
 to Oly.. :)

Is it the Dow Jones Index hitting 10000points? :bsmilie::bsmilie: Ok lame....

How come nobody start a thread asking "Why have u switch camp from Oly to..." Or "Why have u switch from... to Oly" :p

Well, I didn't switch camps ... I just added Olympus to the range :bsmilie:

serious? u try on which body?

Serious... i use the E510 and have 50mm f/2.0 and 35-100 f/2.0. i have a lot a peers who use E-3 and f/2 lense (14-35, 35-100), some of them also admit that Olympus AF can be and should be better.

btw i love my gears but let me repeat it again Oly AF sucks especially with f/2.0 zooms but when the AF gets it right, you get amazing shots!

I think this statement needs some qualification and quantifying.

Please do so.

i am not too sure how to qualify and quantify. It my experience using the E510+35-100 f/2.0 or 50 f/2.0 for the last 2 yrs. No offense intended, just my opinion.

Cicak mentioned that he used a E-510. Considering that is a camera that is under the most entry level model, it is no wonder that there are some compromises. And it is a very outdated camera by today's standards. Cicak should consider an E-3 with SWD lenses should AF be one of the priority when choosing a camera system.

my friend uses both bodies E-3 and E-30 and he has both 14-35 SWD, 35-100... if i remember correctly he also say the AF on the 14-35 SWD sucks. he is also a fanboy and still using Oly.:p

I have the 50mm f2 too. I also used to have the E510. I know or a fact the AF on the E510 is significantly slower and sometimes not able to lock compared to the the E3. But then again, it is a matter of understanding your equipment. The times when it cannot lock are usually low-light and in no or poor contrast areas. Also, the 50 mm f2 lens is not known for its AF speed. But I am happy. I dun have grounds for complain. Or maybe I am biased. Ahh...I dun know. But whatever the case, I dun feel like I need to change to Canikon or anything like that. Their cameras may have other disadvantages that I may not be willing to accept.

Agree, i am actually referring more to the f/2.0 zooms....14-35 and 35-100

The macro ZD 50mm f/2.0 is an excellent lense!

BTW i am also happy with what i have:)
Cheers

Thanks for clearing up my doubts.

I am not sure why the 14-35SWD would suck... something that still baffles me... but I have no problem shooting in low light, because concert coverage is primarily my core shooting business and I have yet to run into any problems whatsoever... I would love to talk to your friends given a chance... most likely a user problem than a system problem. I have shot a lot of concert DVD covers in the past and have always been using my E-System. I can safely say that I use the camera system in worse than usual lighting conditions.

In the further past, when I was still on E-1, 35-100, 50-200 non-SWD, I used to use manual focusing though and that also have served me well, so again... no qualms about the system, but of course, we are talking about AF here now. I have to admit that when I was using Egnaro's 7D, it was quite something... the AF is responsive and very fast, something that Canon has always impressed me about...

Hey, u (microcosm) are back!

Can ask Egnaro to post his impressions of his 7D versus the E3? I am interested to hear from him. I hope 4/3 forum can be mature enough to handle this??

Egnaro should be reading this when he comes home from playing with his 7D. First impressions is the "important" high quality screen... what impresses me is the AF speed, but never really trying in low light. But weight and ergonomics, well, I am not impressed at all. Olympus' ergonomics is almost BMW-ish... excellent since the days of E-10.

I used to use shoot Canons - up to a 5D.

I stopped photography for a while, and when I started again, I picked up an Oly E420 coz it was cheap. Now I own an E3 with a 14-35mm f2 SWD.

During the weekend, my bro tested his 40D + 16-35L and my E3 + 14-35mm f2. He couldn't believe the quality of the images, the subtlety of colours, and the overall resolution of the lens on my Oly.

At f2 (wide open), it is very very sharp. At f2.8, the Canon is quite mushy in the details.

All I can say is that in all my years of photography with Nikons and Canons, the only other time I've been as happy with the sheer quality of the images was when I was on slide film, and my Leica.

BUT all that being said, the Olympus autofocus system is a dog (no matter what the fanboys try to say) - and I'm saying this OBJECTIVELY.

Even on an E3, its not very fast. And its not just with this lens.

So, for what I shoot, I'm still now going to switch systems.

Good luck.

I like dogs. ;p Besides, up until a few weeks ago, I never trusted the AF enough to use it and I've been using my E-1 since April 2004. I even submitted a thread about it here. :bsmilie:

Image quality is the big deal and always has been. That's why I've been using Olympus equipment since the E-1N. The E-1 had the image quality that to me has still not been duplicated, though the E-P1 seems to be better in many ways. I'm looking forward to the enhanced E-3 or E-3 replacement.
