On the other hand, that's what they say about petrol pump prices also... oil prices go up, pump prices go up; oil prices go down, pump prices stay... "you don't see the big picture."

Uniquely Singapore. What goes up won't come down. Have you seen public transport fares revise downwards? Have you seen utilities tariffs revise slightly downwards and rebound the next?

Sony Australia web site - SEL 18-55mm price = AUS$349 = SGD$450.98

NEX Lens (E-mount) : Interchangeable Lens Cameras : Sony Australia

If you are in Australia, die die don't buy or it will make you cry :(

The problem with Australia, as reported recently in the newspapers, is due to local distribution costs.

Thats just pure BS. They charge because they can.
How about digitally downloaded software?
There was a post about how you could go to US for holiday and buy Photoshop there with the price you are paying in Australia.

JB version seems cheaper. But you are encouraged to buy only original software that has proper technical support.

Thats why when travel to country like US or Hkg ...u must shop till you drop as not only u gaib from strong Sgd....their pricing strategy also more consumer friendly....unlike in Sg...merchant always pass the cost but not saving.

would you give the customer a discount if they are already used to the prices... that is the mindset of the business owners...

And shipping costs? Fuel costs? When were these units shipped to singapore? You think that because today the exchange rate is good, it should affect the cost of goods purchased months ago? That the high demand around CNY didn't push up costs?

I think you really need to get a basic grasp of economics and business processes before saying anything.

If you want a stable price, just go buy rrp.

he just asking why....

checked a couple of sites this week and found price of 6D, 7D, Sony RX100 price going up while yen is going down ? anyone knows why ? logically, the price should be going down since SGD is strengthening against the yen. for example 1 sgd = 70 yen in january 2013 and today its 78 yen. sgd is up 12% so why is price of cameras not going down ???
rental.

and of course the demand. if it is selling like hot cake, do you think they will help you save $$$

haha 9lives, thanks for your kind comment. earlier i did not bother to reply to Rashkae who seems to think too much of himself and want to appear like a know it all. too many of these peopel around and i dont usually waste my time with them.

actually i have an MBA with specialisation in Finance so i should know there are multiple cost components in a product. but exchange rate was the standout due to its hugh drop recently (yen vs SGD) and impact on importers, assuming they pay in Yen although they could possibly pay in USD (i may have answered my own question). even if transport costs increase 10%, the impact to overall product price will be much less as shipping is perhaps 6 to 7% of total price, so less than 1%

Exchange rate however has a direct multiplier on price. based on the many thoughtful replies from others (luckily the world is not just made up of jerks), it would appear that we will not know why retailers have decided to raise price and we are none the wiser. it is certainly true that retailers seldom if ever pass on savings to the customers.

the end result is have to save up over longer period to afford what we want. much harder to chase a moving target though.

The recent moves by BOJ affirming their measures to devalue JPY, (USDJPY 150++ pips move in 1 day alone), may not have affected recent prices because inventory costs were booked at different prices.

I think the camera price is proportional to the availability of XMMs to shoot.

Wait till the XMMs grow old DSLRs and L lenses will come crashing down because of the lack of incentive to shoot.

Depends... if there are more Sions... :bsmilie:

We human creatures are very funny. When it is cheap, you suspect the quality. Then if you buy high and price dropped, you get angry because your 'investment' has depreciated. Then we look for 'branding' and expect the brand to cost more than what the physical aspect of that item can achieve. We try to link it to design claiming the difference is due to design but very often, it is nothing to shout about.

If you observe more, you would notice the super rich don't flash around on branded items. Of course they drive the top end car and live in high end houses. So, maybe this is one way we are announcing to people out there, I have achieved. hahaha

buy cheaply second hand. won't ever complain expensive la. if can afford first hand,be magnanimous enough to forgive suppliers when prices drop.

after all "Customer is king. King don't bargain"

Did you realize customer will be very happy when they get a 'discount'? That is why sale is very successful. Retailer jack up 200% then run a sale giving 70%. Everybody is happy.

Buying pre-owned (2nd hand didn't sound so nice), is a good choice and I always do that. Items get recycle and is environmentally friendly while we save money.

perhaps many of their factories are overseas and costs are mostly in Chinese RMB or Thai Baht?

prices in HK have not dropped either

best strategy is to buy in Japan , just make sure their operating system has English language choice

otherwise haizzz give the entire supply chain some breathing room with the weaker yen....they also had to maintain that same price when the yen was stronger... their margins arent that high in the first place

What about Made in China Apple iPhones selling for more than overseas markets?

Then you just proved that you should never have passed your course and your MBA is basically toilet paper.

Hint: I don't think too much of myself. I just think too little of you. And to people like you who are only capable of oversimplistic thoughts, anything that requires thinking is "a waste of time". :)

a car show is coming soon, was told that many people is going to shoot race queens there, so the price of cameras will surge again.

do you like to short some DSLR?

And also on "car show lenses"!

Is that how you get discount ?

Show the sales man the aunties photos that you shoot and told him you don't have any XMM to shoot :bsmilie:
