Can someone kindly explain to me what's the signifance of 2.8.

what's the benefits of having constant f2.8 throughout a zoom range versus one that is variable. e.g 28-100mm f/3.5-5.6 versus 28-100mm f/2.8

A constant aperture will be used throughout the range:

eg.
28-100mm f/3.5-5.6 - At 28 u can shoot at 3.5, at 100 u shoot at 5.6
28-100mm f/2.8 - At 28 u shoot 2.8, at 100 u also shoot 2.8

Basically it allows u to work faster and may sometimes allow you to omit flash - which is convenient in places where flash is prohibited eg. museum or performances

The advantage to shoot at a longer distance without using flash at a constant aperture.

It seems that the Force is not with you yet.
An advice Masters has for you.

"Everything comes at a price, including constant aperture lens" :D

Just check with canon. The retail price for the lens is $2649 :flame:

For the 28-100mm f/3.5-5.6, you cannot shoot at f3.5 at 100mm but only at f5.6. This is frastrating when u need a big aperture when shooting at low light but this lens doesnt permit u to do that. So you have to use a slower shutter speed which will make motion blur or handshake blur or pump up ISO(which is not really recommended)

For 28-100mm f/2.8, no matter how u zoom u can have f2.8.

Understand?

Canon confirm sell exp 1 wat....better check with AP or MS etc.....

Damm canon....come out this lens when i got my 24-70 f2.8
Sianz.....shld i sell away and get this? Hmmm.....

i do not shoot big time and i use a cheap $SGD250 EF28-80mm/f3.5-5.6 ring-type USM on the 1D and i get decent results  best of all, the lens doesnt extend when zoomed.

the remainder of the money goes into the 2 L telephotos.

i believe in distributing the budget as necessary. for 28-100mm there is no need for L..for me at least. hehe. hence i urge u guys to seriously think through if u ever really need to plonk $2k for the 24-105L with extending zoom. seriously speaking, its either get a cheap wide-to-normal lens.. or get the 24-70/2.8L provided u are willing to spend

Don't bother. Your 24-70 will serve you well. You have an added advantage of a constant f2.8, while only sacrificing an extra 35mm, which is not terribly important if you already have a zoom to cover the telephoto range.

Maybe I will get this lens if I win a lottery... well... maybe not, shucks, forget it. f/4 is too slow for me. Nearly $2K for an f/4 zoom? Ridiculous. They should have priced it a bit closer to the 70-200/4L. Even $1.3-1.4K would have been great, but I still wouldn't have bought it.

Give me that 18-70/2.8L IS zoom, perfect for 1.6x DSLR's.

I guess its because of the IS that gave it the extra 50%

Those who buy early is Carrot head :bsmilie: :bsmilie: :bsmilie:

EF17-40mm f/4L USM : (Canon jp Yen120,000) Cathay selling S$1230 !

EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM : (Yen220,000) CP selling S$2400 !

@@@ EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM : (Yen145,000) CP selling S$2200 ! Canon Singapore Cop Cop Cop the big big Carrot head !

Actually there are some carrot head prices for Canon lenses in Singapore, old or new. If survey the Japanese prices more, you'll find SG prices for some lenses marked up terribly, even if the lens is not so "new" now

Sigh. I was hoping it would come without the IS.

I was hoping it would be priced like the 17-40. :(
