Depends on wad u shoot lor, is 1 stop of light more important or IS? So far there's no review on the sharpness of the lens but shouldn't be too far from 24-70L. Then also depends on wad body u use. if using 1.6FOV body, why need such a long lens for a general purpose lens? might as well use a 70-200 to go wif 24-70 better haha.. Overall u muz evaluate wad lens will serve u better.

Ya, 24-105 seems more suitable for FF bodies. 24-70 is like those 'mid-range'(neither here nor there) lenses where most ppl seldom use for 1.3x and 1.6x bodies alike. ;p

But at f4, it has IS and this will allow you to shoot at shutter speeds 3 stops slower. That allow will beat the 24-70 f2.8 which is only 1 stop faster.

Think this is a usual misconception by alot of ppl. Yes, IS/VR allows u to handhold at slower shutter speeds 3 stop or maybe more, depending on the individual, meaning how good and stable he/she is. BUT, what it doesn't allow is a faster shutter speed. IS/VR cannot aid you in capturing an action. Sometimes, there can be a difference between a shutter speed of 1/30 & 1/60. This is something IS/VR cannot compensate for. Thats why, there is a significant difference between the 24-70 f2.8 vs the 24-105 f4 IS. Well, one thing to note, we are not talking abt increasing ISO to attain the right shutter speeds. If so, then IS/VR can be done w/o under most lighting conditions :) No offences nothernlights, jus my opinion ;)

Who is buying this new baby?

I can't wait to get my hands on it. ;p

Even though it's a f4 lens but it serves my purpose compared to the elder brother 24-70. I don't really need the 2.8 but rather than extra focal length.

Totally Agree wif u, but while we're mentioning ISO, Canon's new CMOS sensors produce wonderfully clean images up to 1600. U won't see much downside in upping to ISO by 1 stop to compensate for the 1 stop loss of f/4 compared to f/2.8. and IS is def a great feature to have. there'll always be cases where IS will make the diff btw a blur and sharp image esp in low light. or else i won't be saving for a 70-200 L IS over the sigma one w/o IS. Of course it can be argued that IS is not so crucial in a general purpose lens.. its a matter if opinion and use i guess..

I'll add on...

I have the 24-70 F2.8L, and most of the time, I find myself using F4 and above. Only in situation such as indoor, or at night, then only will I need a 2.8. When you need the 2.8, it's really priceless, but then again, when you are lack of light, many times even 2.8 ain't enough ;)

So I guess, I'll cling on to my lens for a pretty long while and forgo the 24-105... unless I can secure a really good bargain down the road, it is most unlikely that I will get this lens... might change my mind lateron, but heck, tis is what's on my mind at this time. :P

Hey Ross,

If you have not get the 24-70 f2.8, would you get this lens(24-105 f4 IS)? Can you offer some advice? Even when indoors, normally a flash is used, so is f2.8 really necessary?

Thanks.

f2.8 is not a magic figure. remember, by opening up ur lens to f2.8, no doubt u can shoot in pretty dim conditions. however, u're sacrificing DOF (depth of field) for it. if u are covering an event, its not always practical to shoot at f2.8. hence, a flash is necessary, f2.8 or not.

If I dun have tat?... Maybe, depends on price. won't pay over 1.5 for a F4.

in this focal range, 2.8 is really nice if you want a silky background.. :D , and sometime indoor can dun use flash lar...;p

Hi Ross and Nightwolf,

But it has IS. There is no L in this range with IS. Hmm... At first, I was thinking of going for 24-70 but since 24-105 came out, I am in a dilemma. I already have 24-85 btw but I need sharpness which my 24-85 dun have for an L.

Man, tell me what should I get that I will not regret. :dunno:

No need to think so hard, just get the 24-105 f4 if the price is right.

You as the photographer should know how to overcome the short coming of each lens, be it f2.8 or f4. Don't let the lens control you, but you control the lens. :)

Agreed. And there also too much hang up about having IS technology on the lens. Nice to have, but not always necessary.

Cheers,

There's an extra button on the lens just for stopping motion! The time will be about 0.125x the normal speed. Just take a look at your watch when u press it! :D

reminded me once upon a time channel 5 had the show shiver, where the camera dealer sold him a camera that had a shutter speed of 1/x , allowing him to look into photographs that told the future of the subject...
p.s, when's the next big toto? :bsmilie:

I think we've all got to wait for the lens to be reletively well circulated before judgement.
look at the 17-40 there was no big hoo haa... till people started adopting it, and lenes like the 17-85 IS, much hoo haa, average pics... i think canon's just hoping its gonna be like the previous 2 f/4 wonders....

we'll see... in time.

Does all IS lens have this? Or 300 f2.8 and above? I dun think I see it in 70-200 f2.8 IS and 300f4. :(

This feature can only be found on 300mm f2.8 and above prime lenses.

Not for 300mm f4, 70-200mm f2.8 IS or 100-400mm. :what:

Phil Askey has released quite a few photos he shot using this lens and the 5D...

I think that eAgles was refering to the AF-S button your 300mm f2.8 lens. :bsmilie:

Are you sure that you have not seen it before? :sticktong
