Which would you mount on your 7D? (17-55f2.8) or (24-70L f2.8)

How much does a 2nd hand 24-70L retail for now.
A new one costs about 2200 sing right

R u sure that on crop 17-55 has beta IQ? 17-55 is made for crop n 24-70 is made for FF. If u put 24-70 on a crop body, it ll only utillise the centre part of the glass which is v sharp. I believe 24-70 on a crop will give good iq from center to corner of e frame.

Absolutely, I've seen it with my own eyes using the same 60D body. I'm gonna say it again on a crop body 17-55IS is KING IQ wise in this focal range.

Actually for guys looking to buy a good walkabout lens for a crop sensor body, but are not keen on getting the 17-55 due to
i) Possibility of upgrading to full frame in the future
ii) Lack of a Red Ring
iii) Lack of weather sealing and poorer built quality

can consider getting the 16-35 II. It actually translates to quite a useful 25-56mm range on a crop sensor body... with a f2.8 maximum aperture. If one day you decide to get a full frame or 1.3x crop sensor body, the 16-35 will double up as an awesome UWA lens. :)

Ok, cos i havent seen results from 17-55 b4 compared to 24-70. But i always know both were good.

If im still using crop, 17-55! Thats me for the IS, price n wide end. Although 24-70 produces v sharp pics in my opinion, so sharp i have problems with ppl s facial marks even wide open. But weights a tonne.

Does red ring bring good pics?

I think it goes for about 1500-1800 2nd hand depending on age, condition etc.

Yeah brand new local set is about 2.1 to 2.2k

I think its very clear cut for me.. For cropped body just go for 17-55mm. There should be almost close to no dispute for this. Its sharp, wide, has IS and USM. Why would anyone even consider about 24-70mm for a cropped body? Even compared with 17-40mm I still think its better to go with 17-55mm.

Coz most ppl think that the red ring trumps all others. Sad but true.

different people have different needs... some use only a 17-55, some have Tokina/Sigma UWA paired with 24-70L. I even have friends using 28-135 IS as walkaround lens on his 7D.

there is no logic in "die die must have 17-55 as walkaround lens for APS-C".

Well.. TS only ask for advise between 17-55mm and 24-70mm on his 7D. So I can say the logical choice is a 17-55mm.

I'm not saying that all cropped body needs to go with a 17-55. It really depends what ppl are shooting.

To me, take it this way, both 17-55mm and 24-70mm are very good lenses. But I feel that both are similar 17-55mm is like 24-70mm on crop sensor, it is made for crop bodies. IQ wise, like I say it is slimilar as one is meant for crop and the other is more for Full frame. Even you have the uwa, 17-55mm will be quite different, after you count in the 1.6 crop, it is like have 25mm... Which is no longer that wide... For street, indoor, and walk around is great plus it is quite balance in the weight with the IS compare to the 24-70mm's weight...
I try 24-70mm on my old 40D, I think is a bit too tight to do a lot of things, or too short to reach for things on the crop bodies... You can try both then decide again.

So after reading I think you should know my choice, 17-55mm. Thou 3years down the road you may change to full frame, but you can always sell the 17-55mm and get your 24-70mm then.
